David Eagles at the RAF Museum London
31 March 2019 is the official day that the Panavia #Tornado – after 40 years – is taken out of service. The #RAF Museum was proud to welcome Mr David Eagles AFC FRAeS recently, a former test pilot with flight experience on an incredible amount of #aircraft types, including the Tornado.
He originally flew with the Fleet Air Arm, flying the Hawker Sea Hawk. He also flew with the United States Navy and the Royal Australian Navy, flying several aircraft types such as the Grumman F9F Panther and the Hawker Sea Fury. He flew Sea Venom and Sea Vixen fighters from British carriers until 1963, when he started flying and testing the Hawker Siddeley #Buccaneer.
He later joined the British Aircraft Corporation and was heavily involved in the development of the Panavia Tornado. In 1979, he flew the first prototype of the Tornado ADV (Air Defence Variant), an example of which can be seen in Hangar 3/4/5 at the RAF Museum #London. He later became chief test pilot and made the first flight of the British Aerospace EAP, fore-runner of the current RAF fighter jet, the Eurofighter #Typhoon.
In this short video, standing next to the Tornado GR1B in Hangar 6, David Eagles talks about the Tornado and explains four aspects which made it revolutionary for its day. He compares it with the Buccaneer, an aircraft he has many fond memories of. He goes on to compare the EAP with the current Typhoon jet, before explaining what it was like to fly the piston-engined Spitfire and Sea Fury.

The Hawker Typhoon Re-assembly at the RAF Museum London
Two weeks ago the #RAF Museum’s Conservation Team was doing an incredible job on the re-assembly of our Hawker #Typhoon, the only remaining complete #aircraft of its type in the world.
Our Typhoon had been on a 4-year loan at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum in Ottawa. It was safely transported to the RAF Museum London in October in several sections – without its wheels, wings, #propeller and parts of its fuselage connected to its main frame.
Our amazing Conservation team from #Cosford rebuilt the Typhoon in three days, attaching back the wings, the wheels and all other parts.
Now the work is completed, our Typhoon has taken its rightful place in our ‘#BattleofBritain’ exhibition at our #London site.
In this video we show its re-assembly. After watching it why not plan your visit to the Museum to marvel at this incredible aircraft in all its glory. We are open daily from 10.00am. Admission is free.
