Morella, Spain 2019 (city hightlights)
Morella is a small town in Castellón province, 105km North of Castellon de la Plana (where we took the morning bus). The fortified hilltop dominates the town that can keep you busy for a day in this peaceful but beautiful small town.
Some interesting sites in Morella: Castell de Morella, church of Santa Maria la Mayor, Convent de Sant Francesc de Morella, the gothic aqueduct (13th c.), the Town Hall(Ajuntament), Dinosaur Museum.
Food was good in the two restaurants we visited. Don’t forget to try the local special pastry, the flaó, made with cinnamon, cheese, and almonds.
If you get there by car have in mind there is limited parking space (outside the city walls).

Η Μορέγια είναι μια μικρή ορεινή πόλη της επαρχίας Καστεγιό (105χλμ Β της ομώνυμης πόλης από όπου πήραμε και το λεωφορείο, προσοχή γιατί έχει μόνο δύο δρομολόγια την ημέρα).
Πρόκειται για μια από τις ομορφότες πόλεις της ευρύτερης επαρχίας της Βαλένθια. Λόγω μεγέθους μπορεί να περπατηθεί άνετα (οκ προφανώς θα έχει ανηφόρα μέχρι το κάστρο) με φιλόξενους ντόπιους, καλό φαγητό, μαγαζάκια για δώρα και κάποια αξιοθέατα για να σπάσει η μονοτονία. Αξίζει να δείτε την εκκλησία Santa Maria la Mayor, το γοτθικό υδραγωγείο, το δημαρχείο αλλά προφανώς το highlight της επίσκεψης μας ήταν η βόλτα στο κάστρο (13ος αιώνας) για την θέα πάνω από την πόλη.

Peníscola or Peñíscola, anglicised as Peniscola, is a municipality in the province of Castellón, Valencian Community, Spain. Peniscola is located on the Costa del Azahar, north of the Serra d'Irta along the Mediterranean coast. Peniscola is a popular tourist destination.
Peniscola, often called the Gibraltar of Valencia, and locally as The City in the Sea, is a fortified seaport, with a lighthouse, built on a rocky headland about 220 feet (67 m) high, and joined to the mainland by only a narrow strip of land (Peníscola is a local evolution of Latin peninsula). The history of the place goes back to the Iberians. Later the town became Phoenician, named Tyreche, then Greek, under the name Chersonesos (meaning peninsula). It was next captured by the Carthaginians under Hamilcar Barca; legend has it that this is the place where he made his son Hannibal swear an oath that he would never be a friend of Rome.
The present castle was built by the Knights Templar between 1294 and 1307. In the fourteenth century it was garrisoned by the Knights of Montesa, and in 1420 it reverted to the Crown of Aragon. From 1415 to 1423 it was the home of the schismatic Avignon pope Benedict XIII (Pedro de Luna), whose name is commemorated in the Castell del Papa Luna, the name of the medieval castle, and Bufador del Papa Luna, a curious cavern with a landward entrance through which the seawater escapes in clouds of spray.
The castle where Benedict lived from 1417 until his death in 1423 was restored, improved and new walls were added in 1960 when Anthony Mann's film El Cid was partially filmed there. The town and castle of Peníscola played the role of Valencia. The castle is now a popular tourist attraction and the beaches and surrounding area are a popular family holiday resort.
Peniscola hosts an annual comedy film festival that draws Spanish and foreign actors and filmmakers, and features screenings in historic venues. That the festival celebrates comedy is a natural fit; the city was the backdrop for Luis García Berlanga's comedic masterpiece Calabuch.

AVILA
Ávila es una ciudad y municipio español, situado en la provincia de Ávila, en la comunidad autónoma de Castilla y León. Es capital de la provincia homónima y de la comarca de Ávila —que comprende el Valle de Amblés y la Sierra de Ávila—, así como sede del partido judicial número 3 de la provincia y de la diócesis homónima. Se encuentra situada junto al curso del río Adaja y se trata de la capital de provincia más alta de España, a 1131 m sobre el nivel del mar, en virtud de lo cual en su casco urbano son relativamente frecuentes las nevadas durante el invierno. La ciudad presenta un clima mediterráneo con rasgos continentales. En 2012 su término municipal concentraba el 34 % del total de población de la provincia.
Tras la fundación romana y la asimilación de la población autóctona vetona de la zona —pues no existen indicios claros de un asentamiento prerromano en el casco histórico— la ciudad pasaría al poder visigodo. Ávila caería, al igual que la mayor parte del territorio peninsular, bajo dominio musulmán a comienzos del siglo VIII, y no sería reconquistada de forma definitiva por las tropas cristianas hasta el siglo XI. Experimentaría su auge durante el siglo XVI, para verse posteriormente sumida en una prolongada crisis y declive hasta el siglo XIX, en el cual la construcción del ferrocarril consiguió dar un empuje al desarrollo económico.
Ávila posee los títulos de «Ávila del Rey» —otorgado por Alfonso VII—, «Ávila de los Leales» —otorgado por Alfonso VIII— y «Ávila de los Caballeros» —otorgado por Alfonso XI—, todos ellos presentes en la bandera de la ciudad. La seña de identidad es su muralla medieval completa, de estilo románico, destacando también otras construcciones representativas como la catedral del Salvador —cuyo cimorrio se monta sobre la muralla— o la basílica de San Vicente. Ha sido considerada tradicionalmente como «ciudad de cantos y de santos» y su casco histórico medieval, en excelente estado de conservación, fue declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad en 1985.

Valencia is both of Spain, and distinct from Spain. In Muslim hands for five centuries, its Christian European history has been shaped as much by Catalonia, its neighbour to the north, as by Castilla.
