Kyoto Festival: Jidai Matsuri [4K]
For more information, check out the Jidai Matsuri page on our website:
Considered to be one of the top three festivals in all of Kyoto despite its status as a relatively new tradition, Heian Shrine's Jidai Matsuri (Festival of the Ages) is held on October 22nd from noon each year.
The festival is primarily composed of a two kilometer, five hour long procession of countless volunteers dressed in historical garb representing Japanese cultural history from the Meiji era all the way back to the Enryaku era in the 780’s. Painstakingly recreated and researched, going so far as to even make and dye the fabric using the same techniques as they used a thousand years ago, the procession is akin to watching a living history museum march by. Not only do famous historical figures and princesses make appearance, but warriors, priests, politicians, merchants, and commoners are all represented. With that many characters, the Jidai Matsuri gives a very comprehensive look in to the clothing and appearance of Japanese past.

The Shinkansen/ Bullet Train Open Day in Hamamatsu, Japan
The Shinkansen/ Bullet Train Open Day in Hamamatsu, Japan
This an amazing event to go to and see everything about the bullet train. This was the last year for the hoisting of the bullet train though which is sad but JR Japan are changing their method of reparing the bullet trains so they don't need to hoist them up from next year.

Aomori's Nebuta Matsuri Experience | Japanese Summer Festival ★ ONLY in JAPAN
The Nebuta Matsuri is considered by many as Japan's top festival and I traveled 600 km north to the northern most city of Honshu to participate in the fun!
What makes Nebuta so amazing?
★ It could be the illuminated Nebuta floats that are pulled down on the city streets, turning and bowing to the crowd.
They're often in the form of mythological Japanese gods or dieties, larger than life in size.
★ Perhaps it's the taiko drums and flute players that make this festival no 1. The beat with those mystical flutes stays in your mind and body days after the festival has ended.
★ It could be the haneto dancers dressed in special yukata dancing and screaming Rasera! Rasera!
The answer is that they all when put together make this festival a must-see when you visit Japan in the summer.
In this episode we look at:
AOMORI CITY ATTRACTIONS
NEBUTA HISTORY AND MUSEUM
HOW TO PARTICIPATE IN NEBUTA
HOW THE FLOATS ARE MADE
THE MUSIC
HANETO DANCERS
Special thanks to MARUHA NICHIRO NEBUTA ASSOCIATION and Nebuta Design Master Shigeki Tezuka and his wonderful Nebuta float called Records of the Three Kingdoms: Zhong Fei Roars at the Bridge of Changban
STAR WARS also made an appearance at this year's Nebuta Festival. Check it Yoda, Luke, Vader, C3PO, R2D2 and others in the form of Nebuta art in the video.

Hibuse Matsuri (日高火防祭), Oshu for You Ep. 4
Coming to Japan? You have to try going to a festival, or “matsuri.” Come with Bill and Amanda as they eat, drink and generally have a great time at the Hibuse Matsuri in Oshu, Iwate Prefecture. The Hibuse Matsuri has a history of over 300 years. The highlight is when the nine “hayashi” floats parade through the streets while the children and adults on the float play elegant music on taiko drums, flutes and shamisen.
About the ILC and Oshu for You:
The International Linear Collider is an international project that will try to uncover the mysteries of the universe with the most powerful electron accelerator in history, and the Kitakami site (including Oshu city) is a candidate site for the ILC. Oshu city is located in the southern part of Iwate Prefecture, Tohoku, Japan.
In this series, we showcase some of the many wonderful sites in and around Oshu city! This video is produced by the International ILC Support Committee, the Oshu International Relations Association, and Oshu City.
