24July2019 Ecuador Day 7, stop in fishing village and Salinas, Miami Beach of Ecuador
This morning we left Sanctuary Puerto Cayo Lodge and headed south to the small fishing village of Puerto Lopez where I captured a couple short video clips of the sea side fish market. If I lived here, I would be a frequent customer for the fresh “caught” fish.
Jonathan explained to us that when we pass through the small villages and see lots of men in “hammocks” or sleeping elsewhere, they are not lazy. They are fishermen who have been working from 3 AM or all night catching fish for the morning market.
We had a delicious lunch at Mar De Luz in “Olon” where we met ex-pat’s that quickly became friends.
A young waitress told us what education is like for a teenager in Ecuador. Then we visited a lovely condominium, went to the beach and took a selfie with the “Olon” sign.
The final stop of the day is the sea side city of Salinas which is well developed and called the Miami Beach of Ecuador and rightly so.
That evening we strolled along the beach to an ex-pat’s apartment and was shocked at where one can live, including utilities, for just over a thousand dollars a month.
Tomorrow we wind through Guayaquil, Ecuador’s largest city, and then navigate our way over the massively high Andes Mountain Range to Cuenca.

Day8 (Salcedo Market) - exploring the animals section 10 Day Ecuador & Amazon Adventure (May 2014)
SALCEDO = Puerta del Oriente Ecuatoriano
By 10:30am on Thursday morning (May 29, 2014), we found ourselves at the heart of the Cotopaxi province of Ecuador where it lies the sleepy little town of SALCEDO.
Our Gate1 group stopped here to visit the local, colorful indigenous market!
As we entered the Salcedo Market that Thursday morning, we had mixed feelings: appreciation for the local crafts and dirty cheap prices of the fresh fruits but also intrigued to see pets in cages and signs of animal cruelty... minimal if any sanitation accommodations... hectic parking situation.
On the positive side, the lively sight of barter trade at the market was inspiring!
This old-style commerce with its weird jumble of sights, sounds and smells often proves to be exactly the sort of adventure many visitors are looking for.
The town itself is small and somewhat unremarkable, but the people seemed friendly and hospitable.
TIP: Try the local ice-cream for which the town has begun to gain a world-wide reputation. Delicious and refreshing!!!
*** Note that The Salcedo Indigenous Food & Animals Market moved temporary from el barrio Económico Augusto Dávalos to el barrio Anchiliví – San Marcos where over 150 merchants from Cotopaxi and Tungurahua sell a variety of products.

Swiming with the Turtles - Puerto Lopez, Ecuador
Puerto Lopez - Ecuador
Located on the coast of Ecuador, about 8 hours from Quito. This town is a very small town, yet pack with lots of restaurants and full attractions. We stayed at an Airbnb which it only cost $32 for two night and it was just a block away from the beach. The day we arrived was a bit late so we pretty much enjoyed the nightlife since the adventure was first thing in the morning.
Saturdays on Puerto Lopez is the fish market day. Fishermen come early in the morning to deliver and sale their catch and honestly it is fairly cheap. A lobster cost about $12 each and trust me I wanted 3 of them…
We book our scuba diving trip with Fondo Azul, own by two twin brothers, they have been scuba diving for over 15 years and it was such a great experience since we were the only ones scuba diving that day.
My goal was to find some sharks to swim with but instead, we came across some sea turtles!! Even thought this turtles are huge, they are fairly quick swimmers. I tried my best to catch up to one of the turtles so I could hold on to the shell but no way he/she was going to let me because it took off so fast.
Ecuador is full of adventures! You can plan your trip to the ocean/beach or go to a jungle trek but also you can hike some of the highest mountains in South America. Make sure to go out there and explore the world! Happy travels!

This is Puerto Lopez in Ecuador
These are the hostals, shops and stands that align next to the beach of Puerto Lopez. The economy here thrives on tourism and fishing.
Here are some things I have learned from visiting Puerto Lopez.
Dogs out number cats like 20 to 1 here.
The further inland you go away from the beach, the cheaper the food will be but the places will be more run down.
The WI-FI internet here is super slow but treated like gold to those with laptops.
When it rains, it happens during the mornings.

Morning Catch on Playa Cautivo La Libertad Ecuador
A casual stroll on Cautivo Beach watching the fishermen do their work. These are little tiny fish they use for ceviche. A popular dish here on the south coast of Ecuador. They asked if I wanted to take some fish home, but I did not have a container to carry them in. Next time I visit with a bucket in hand!

Ecuador Fishing Trip
You can charter a private boat out of Salinas, Ecuador for $500. We were out for 12 hours on glassy water and caught three of the biggest fish (Mahi Mahi) I've ever seen in person. To put things in perspective, the two guys you see reeling them in are over 6'1 and 6'6.
W're certainly not avid fishermen, as you probably noticed, but if you go down (or up) to Ecuador I would suggest you take a trip out for yourself.... if you like blood and guts that is.
