Tannery Tour in Fez, Morocco | Top Attractions Travel Fez
Tannery Tour in Fez, Morocco | Top Attractions Travel Fez
Morocco is known for their leather exports.
So when in a medieval city like Old Fez, a popular tourist attraction is often to take a tannery tour. What are tanneries? A seven century age-old way of making leather products from belts to bags, cushions, etc...through the skinning, shearing, drying and dyeing of animal skins with the help of laborious manpower and big vats of all-natural dyes.
Now guide books will be-cry the relationship between the tanneries and its smell as a forewarning, such that a post-911 New York resident and vegetarian like myself, immediately began drawing notions of the deathly odor as being from rotting carcasses. I admit, I was a bit reluctant to tourist this territory. Nevertheless, my curiosity is stronger than fear or stench, and pinching my nostrils and breathing through the side of my mouth held work-around solutions for opening this bejeweled Fez-ian Pandora's prize.
Well, honestly,... the smell was nowhere near the scariness I had imagined.
Pigeons...

What Traveling in Morocco is Like | ???? Fez to Chefchaouen
Taking the bus from Fez to Chefchaouen. If you visit Morocco, you are sure to visit other cities during your time there. Apart from private taxis (which is a real thing there), the bus is probably going to be your next best option... but even that is quite an experience in itself.

Eating A CAMEL BURGER & Hanging With A Local In Fez Morocco
I left Chefchaouen and went back to Fez. I met up with a local that I had made friends with on my previous visit to Fez. I attempted to speak some Arabic (badly) but it was fun. I also ended up tasting a camel burger for the first time in the clock cafe restaurant. This was a bit of a different vlog from me, a bit more talking than usual, to be honest it was a random day with no plan lol

Fes el Bali - Morocco
#morocco #fes #andy1803
Fes el-Bali is the oldest part of Fez, one of the imperial city of Morocco. It is the historical district founded between 789 and 808 a.c. by Idrisid dynasty. It includes the medina and its fortified walls all around. Fez el-Bali is surely the biggest car-free human settlement in the world, a dedalo of narrow roads and alleys in which is easy to loose the sense of orientation. It is also famous for its Al Karaouine University, the oldest in the world. In 1981 UNESCO inserted the site into the human’s heritage list.
A tour of Morocco should include a visit to Fes el-Bali at least once. It is a medieval town, almost preserved and still inhabited. Its typical architecture witnesses the imperial past of the city with several madrasas, mosques and noble buildings. Its merchant soul is still visible almost everywhere with shops, stalls and street markets. Traditional handmade manufacturers work today using the same middle age techniques, as you may observe visiting the leather tanneries or the copper workshops. Walking into Fes el-Bali is a full immersion in Morocco’s traditions and culture, feeling the vibes of this wonderful country.
Someone says that it’s easy to get lost there, as the district is huge and it can be challenging to understand where you are. Maps are useless. Don’t worry about that. Take your time, bring a compass with you and move in like an explorer. You will enjoy it. Start from Bab Bou Jeloud (the Blue door) and walk into the heart of the medina. Surprises wait for you behind each corner, inside any wood roof alley, in unexpected squares or just in front of an open door. Anyway, if you don’t like the risk, you can look for a guide to bring you in this iconic labyrinth.
There are several guesthouses or hotels to overnight inside the medina or just close to main doors. Choose a riad, the typical local accomodation. They are comfortable, often cheaper and charming. And don’t forget street food. There is plenty of cafè, tea rooms, restaurants and open air kitchens ready to satisfy your taste.
This short film has been filmed mainly with a little action cam, the Eken H8R. Some footage have been shot with a mirrorless Olympus OM-D EM5 MKII. Photos are by Francesca Sparatore and her Nikon D3100. Cyberlink PowerDirector 15 for post-production.
The track “Coast” is by great Silent Partner and is available in YouTube library.
Special thanks to the two musicians/dancers of Place Seffarine. I don't know their name but they are great.

Whether rambling through ancient medinas, sampling cuisine at a local souq or relaxing in the sun at a white-washed seaside town, the past is always present in this diverse and colorful country. Here’s a look at the best places to visit in Morocco:

It is the second largest city in Morocco after Casablanca, with a population of 1.4 million (2014). Located to the northeast of Atlas Mountains, Fez is situated at the crossroad of the important cities of all regions; 206 km (128 mi) from Tangier to the northwest, 246 km (153 mi) from Casablanca, 169 km (105 mi) from Rabat to the west, and 387 km (240 mi) from Marrakesh to the southwest which leads to the Trans-Saharan trade route. It is surrounded by the high grounds, and the old city is penetrated by the River of Fez flowing from the west to east.
