2019 06 22 Morocco - Toubkal National Park
The Berber hilltop village called Aroumd is great target for half day trek from Imlil and back. It is also good starting point for two day trek to the top of Jebel Toubkal, North Africa's tallest peak, but we do not have enough time to get it done - maybe next time...
The trek from Imlil is uphill all the way, with little shade via stony valley where mule carry stuff up and down the well defined trial.
Aroumd village sits 1900m above sea level and has population just below 2000 people which makes it the largest village in Mizane Valley. It is extraordinary looking place, built on a huge moraine spur above the valley. Steep-tiered fields of potatoes, onions, barley and various kinds of fruit line the valley sides, their terraces edged with purple iris. Berbers are friendly and kids are keen to look at the camera and chat a bit, even when we speak only English and they Moroccan.
Marrakech Part 2 (Imlil Valley Trek, Day trip to Atlas Mountains by Art de Cuivre)
In this video, we have shown all the stops we made on our journey to the village of Imlil located in the high Atlas Mountains, not too far from the city of Marrakech. We had booked our day trip tour on TripAdvisor.com via Viator conducted by Art De Cuivre. Omar was our guide for the day and we were very happy with the entire experience we had with this tour. A Trip To The Roof Of North Africa - Mount Toubkal 4167m
I had never thought I could do it before.
It is simple.
Climbing mountains wasn't my thing. Although I am a big fan of hiking and rock climbing, I wasn't that much into long walks, hard trekking, cold climate & eating limited food and walking with limited supplies.
During my 6 hours & a half journey to reach the top, I was seduced many times to just stop & turn back. The ascent was torturing, sometimes with more than a 60° slope.
At one point, I decided to stop and turn back. It was at about +3600m & only 600m to go. Infact, it was a 3.1Km walk to the top.
Only then I finally decided to think one step at a time. I forgot the road & only looked at where my next step should be.
Slowly but surely I finally made it to the highest point in a respectful time (3hours sharp).
I realised that there is nothing as such as physical exercice or training. All that matters is the mental training & your ability to convice yourself that you can do it.
As long as you believe in yourself, nothing will stop you.

Day 1. Marrakech, Morocco – Imlil:
At the airport of Marrkech, you meet up with Pathfinder Travels’ leader/mountain guide. We continue our journey to the mountain village Imlil, where we get settled into the hostel of our friend Slimane. During the trip, information about the upcoming days’ events and activities will be handed out.
Day 2. Imlil – Refuge Toubkal:
After an early wake-up and breakfast, we pack our luggage onto the mules and hike up to Refuge Toubkal (3,106 m) at the base of Jbel Toubkal. We eat lunch and then get informed about the local mountain environment, the routes for the next few days, safety considerations, etc. This is followed by a practical run through of our avalanche equipment. We will overnight the next few nights in the refuge, where we also eat breakfast and dinner. We take lunch with us onto the mountain.
Day 3 – 6. Ski touring:
In the morning, we put on skis and climbing skins (ski touring) or crampons (alpine touring) for a ski tour of Ouanoukrim (4,089 m), and Jbel Toubkel and other nearby peaks of about 3,700 to 4,100 m. The area offers both steep couloir skiing and open fields, and we choose our descents as per the group’s wishes and nature’s conditions.
Day 7. Imlil – Marrakech:
An early descent to Imlil, some repacking and then we continue our journey towards Marrakech. We visit the bathhouses, called hammam, and some light city orienteering in medinan, the old innertown. We eat a wonderful dinner that evening.
Day 8. Departure:
We take the transfer to the airport and can glance back at the High Atlas Mountains with joy. If you have choosen to continue the trip on you own you part here from the rest of the group.

Mt Toubkal, Atlas Mountains, Morrocco, October 2019
We flew into Morrocco from Luton London to Marrakesh but left Manchester at midnight for the early flight at 6am from Luton and arrived 10.30am local time. I arranged the whole trip for my friends, the same friends who came to Keswick, Lake District in September for a practice hike up Blencathra. We arrived in Marrakesh and was collected by taxi and headed to Imlil which was in the Atlas Mountains and our start point for the two-day trek to the top of Mt Toubkal. We stayed the night in Imlil and while we relaxed in the setting sun we took in our first glimpse of the mountain range which was gorgeous. The weather was about 29 degrees at ground level but summit forecast of -1/-3. Due to changes by the government, we had to pay for a guide to take us to the top but I'd already planned the route and did my research as the route isn't exactly difficult and it does follow a route all the way up to the refuge. The first day took 8 hours to reach the refuge but we did stop for lunch in a village called Sidi Chamarouch at 2335m. Once we reached the CAF refuge at 3207m it was time for some tagine, Morrocan tea and get used to the altitude. We managed to get to bed for 10am as the alarms were set for 3am for breakfast and leave at 3.30am so we could have a chance seeing the sunrise over the Atlas mountains when we get to the top.
We left on time and straight away we were hit with the steep ground and the path changed to rocks and loose scree. We all used head torches to see as it was pitch black and it was great to see the stars in the African sky when we turned them off while resting and getting rid of the altitude head rushes. We took it slow and steady and making sure all was okay with our health. I have to admit, I wasn't expecting the altitude to kick in like it did. Our guide welcomed us at the top with a few others that made it up there before us and the view was stunning. It was cold with light wind but after 20 minutes taking our shots and videos we then headed back down as Adam in the group was struggling with circulation in his hands so we quickly went down out of the cold wind and tried to warm up quickly.
We headed back to the refuge to recharge with some snacks and tea, then got ready again to head all the way back down to Imlil then headed to Marrakesh for the evening to relax in our city centre Riad and explored the City the next day and chilled on the Riad rooftop in the sun while re rested our legs next to the pool.
It was a great experience and another crack at another Europe mountain. I enjoyed that much I think i've found my location to heap lead some groups here for practice for my ML since we have to have a guide as well. I can put my skills into practice with Mt Toubkal if I get any more friends to hike this mountain.

Video from my recent visit to Toubkal summit in Morocco. I hope you enjoy.
Toubkal is a mountain peak in southwestern Morocco at 4,167 metres it is the highest peak in the Atlas Mountains and in North Africa.Trekkers usually approach the mountain from the road-end village of Imlil (1,740 m) where you need approximately 6-7 hours walk to get to the refuge at 3207m. From that point a path climbs a steep scree slope to the east and enters a valley, then climbs another steep slope to reach a col at 3,940m. At the col the route turns left (northwards) to the summit ridge of Jbel Toubkal. After 4-5 hours since the departure from the refuge in the 4,167m summit views take in most of the Atlas and Little Atlas Mountains.
