Morpeth Northumberland
Morpeth
Three Castle's one day, all around the Morpeth area.
Morpeth is a historic market town in Northumberland, north-east England, lying on the River Wansbeck. Nearby villages include Mitford and Pegswood. In the 2011 census, the population of Morpeth was given as 14,017,[1] up from 13,833 in the 2001 census.
Morpeth Castle
The original motte and bailey dating from the 11th century was built on a hill overlooking the River Wansbeck and destroyed by King John in 1216. A new castle was built in the bailey of the original in the 1340s, but little of that structure survives apart from parts of the curtain wall and the much-altered gatehouse. In 1516 Margaret, sister of Henry VIII and widow of James IV of Scotland, stayed for four months in Morpeth Castle as she fled from her enemies in Scotland and sought refuge with her brother. The one great military event in the castle’s history was in 1644 when a garrison of 500 Lowland Scots held it for Parliament for 20 days against 2,700 Royalists.[1]
The castle was held by and passed by the female line through several illustrious families; de Merlay, Greystoke, Dacre and Howard, none of whom resided there for any long period. In about 1860 the gatehouse was restored and converted to provide a staff residence.[2]
Mitford Castle is an English castle dating from the end of the 11th century and located at Mitford, Northumberland.[1] It is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and a Grade I listed building, enlisted on 20 October 1969.[2] The castle is also officially on the Buildings at Risk Register. The Norman motte and bailey castle stands on a small prominence, a somewhat elliptical mound,[3] above the River Wansbeck. The selected building site allowed for it be to natural hill scarped and ditched, producing the motte.[2]
Mitford Castle
The first of three seats for the main line of the Mitford family constructed on manor lands. Following the destruction of Mitford Castle, Mitford Old Manor House (nearby and to the northwest) was used from the 16th century until the construction of Mitford Hall in 1828. Mitford Hall stands in an 85-acre (340,000 m2) park to the west of the castle ruins.
Bothal Castle
A castle and stately home in the village of the same name near the River Wansbeck, between Morpeth and Ashington in the English county of Northumberland. Botl is Old English for a dwelling. Bothal could refer to a particular dwelling or hall.[1] It was fortified before the Norman conquest, and renovated and remodelled a number of times. It is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and a Grade I listed building.
In 1095, Bothal was given by King William Rufus to Guy I de Balliol, whose daughter Alice married William Bertram, Baron of Mitford, who probably built a hall house. Several generations later, in 1343, Sir Robert Bertram was given permission to turn his manor house into a castle, including an impressive gatehouse. The gate tower and fragments of curtain wall are medieval, a good deal of which still survive to this day. Through the marriage of Bertram's daughter Hellen to Sir Robert Ogle (d. c.1363),[2] the estate passed to the Ogle family in the 14th century.

Breakaway group of 4 riders followed by the main peloton passing through the market town of Morpeth in Northumberland during the 2008 Tour of Britain. Note the casual way pedestrians wander across the road and the presence of couple of stray vans. Is the rolling road closure safe? Should there not be any barriers in a town centre?

Morpeth Saturday market
LOCAL producers put the fruits of their labours to the test at Morpeth today.
Shoppers thronged the Saturday Farmers' Market for a taste of all that's best in local produce.
There was everything from Craster kippers and Lindisfarne oysters to Village Bike beer and Toffee Coal, which has become a best-seller in Selfridge's.
With Easter just around the corner, there was a seasonal theme to the event with live geese and chicks for children to pet and feed.
Out of town shopping protest at Morpeth
OPPONENTS of out of town retail development took to the streets at Morpeth, Northumberland.
Scores of people gathered at the Sanderson Arcade for a poster protest against plans for part of the current County Hall site at Loansdean.
A supermarket, shops, a drive-through fast food restaurant and a pub have been mooted for part of the site.
Objectors say the proposal would damage the existing town centre and claim it is being processed with undue haste.
But Northumberland County Council, which plans to sell off County Hall and adjacent land and build a new HQ at Ashington, says there is a demand for the development.
