Morrison’s Huon Pine Sawmill, The Esplanade, Strahan 7468
Morrison’s Sawmill runs free daily talks and demonstrations about the unique culture and history of Huon pining and the family business and craftsmanship, which has been passed down for generations.
Perspectives :: Randel Morrison
Tasmanian Special Timbers Pty Ltd was formed out of the union of two Tasmanian pioneer milling families in 1993/94. The two companies, C A Bradshaw & Co Pty Ltd and Morrisons Huon Pine Sawmill, have been in operation since 1936 and 1940 respectively.
The new company, Tasmanian Special Timbers Pty Ltd is recognized as a major long-term supplier of quality kiln dried Tasmanian specialty timbers, particularly Huon Pine.
Tasmanian Special Timbers Randel Morrison speaks fondly of his familys long connection with the West Coast and timber milling and of the continuing demand for Huon Pine.
The market for Huon Pine is particularly strong in the areas of furniture manufacture, boat building and craft.
Even though Huon Pine has achieved iconic status and has a certain aura, costs are still comparable with middle-level exotic species from overseas. The bulk of supply is to the local market, with perhaps 40% being directed to the mainland for furniture manufacture.
Virtually no harvesting of Huon pine now occurs, with the bulk of stocks coming from salvage operations conducted on State forest managed by Forestry Tasmania.
We mainly collect wood from the Teepookana plateau near Strahan, supplemented by some incidental salvage from coastal and Habour-side areas.
Randel believes that current allocations are good for perhaps 50 years but has concerns about the security of some supply contracts.
Ideally, we would like to see some additional security around our supply contracts. Banks are reluctant to lend on the basis of current arrangements and this obviously leads to a diminishing level of confidence in possible expansion into the future.

Heritage Tree Care Lucas Milling a Huon Pine Brisbane
Wow wow wow!! Amazing! A rare Tasmanian Huon Pine being slabbed at our depot by artist Len Turner. It is over 500 years old and it was purchased from the Tasmanian Forestry Commission Log Tender and will be made into Len's famous bowls.
It is a burl and is almost all Birdseye grain and therefore is extremely rare! We at Heritage Tree Care are feeling very lucky to have witnessed this unique event!
Huon Pine Woodcarver & Woodturner
Two Men in a Punt, in the Wake of the Huon Piners.
A very special tree, the Huon pine, grows only in the rain forests of western Tasmania. Some trees have been dated at over three thousand years old. The loggers, known as the piners, went to work on the Gordon River and its tributaries by row boats, known as punts. Tough and resourceful men, they worked in the rainforest for up to three months at a time. Ron Morrison and Franz Dockerty row upriver re-discovering old camp sites and logging operations. The program is enhanced with interviews with old men who were there when it all happened.

Tasmania's landscape changes constantly. We have been driving through a valley, with mountains soaring either side, then round the corner you find a wild coastline. That’s really the beauty of Tasmania – it crams a world of drama into its small proportions.

Junkyard Picker - Rescued Huon Pine
Rescued timber.
Earlier this week I bought some old Huon Pine cupboard doors from a bloke that had advertised them on Gumtree. He'd had them for about seven years and hadn't used them since making his wife a jewellery box.
I bought them so that I could use them for small woodworking projects and also because Huon Pine is too bloody good to consign to landfill.
Tools, construction materials, scrap timber, furniture...If I think I'll be able to use it or sell it, I'll buy it.
Thanks for watching and please click on the like button and subscribe to my channel if you haven't already.
