The road to Betancuria Valley includes the following three stops: Mirador Morro Velosa, The Two King statues of Ayose and Guise and Betancuria, the old Capital.
Mirador Morro Velosa is designed by the designer and architect César Manrique, most famous for attractions on the neighbouring island of Lanzarote. Inside the house you are presented with the islands volcanic and geological history. It is also a fantastic lookout and on a clear day, you can see Lanzarote in the distance. It's also great at night for stargazing as the lightpolution on top of mount Tegu is ideal for watching the stars.
The Two Kings - Ayose and Guise are considered the kings or mengtzeis (leaders) of the two Guanches kingdoms - Maxorata in north and Jandia in the south - prior to the arrival of Catholics. Where as Lanzarote was easily dealt with my the catholics, the invasion of Fuerteventura was more problematic, however as the end, Ayose and Guide has little to no chance to succesfully defend the island.
Betancuria was the first and until today the longest standing capital of Fuerteventura, 1404 to 1834. Named after Jean de Betancuria. It was razed by pirates in 1593 and rebuild shortly after.

This is a beautiful landscape steeped in a traditional local colour and decorated throughout by singular elements that characterize the landscape of the area.
Sorry for the unsteady hand at the end, it was blowing a gale on that hill top. I guess that's why its name can be loosely translated to Strong Winds.
Fuerteventura is one of the Canary Islands, in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Africa.

Con la nostra macchina noleggiata da Cicar (consigliatissima) ci dirigiamo verso le dune di Corralejo,dopo scalate tra la sabbia e bagni tra le onde, il pomeriggio andremo a visitare il salt museum salinas del carmen, veramente molto interessante.
Durante il tragitto per raggiungere Bentancuria, incontreremo le due imponenti statue di Morro velosa.

Auf dem Gipfel des 645 m hohen Berges Montaña Tegú wurde nach den Entwürfen
des legendären, von Lanzarote stammenden Künstlers César Manrique ein wunderschöner
Bau mit Restaurant geschaffen, von dem aus man den halben Archipel überblicken kann.
Dieser atemberaubende Aussichtspunkt 3 km nördlich vor Betancuria war lange Zeit leider
nicht zugänglich, da die Schranke am am Fuß des Berges immer geschlossen war.
Seit einem Jahr hat das Restaurant aber wieder einen neuen Besitzer und man kann
die Aussicht wieder genießen.

We had friends staying so had a trip through the mountains to the viewing point of El Mirador de Morro Velosa where you get probably one of the best views of the island. We then continued on to Betancuria for a walk and a Tapas lunch.
The town of Santa María de Betancuria was founded by the Norman conquerors towards the year 1404, during the conquest of the island of Fuerteventura, which was developed in the early years of the 15th century. Betancuria, together with Rubicon in Lanzarote, were the first cities founded by Europeans in the Canary Islands and Betancuria took its name from the own conqueror, Jean de Bethencourt. The town used to be the capital of Fuerteventura.

After the very curly Altantic road lies at the beginning of the green valley Vega de Rio Palmas with a particularly interesting church
built in the 16th century with a stone Renaissance facade and a baroque interior. The special feature is the 24 cm alabaster Statue of St. Mary, probably brought by the conqueror Jean de Béthencourt from the Normandy; this statue (gothic from the Normandie) is since this time Patroness of the island. Every year there is a procession with this saint figure. 6km further is Betancuria named after the conqueror Jean de Béthencourt. In 1402 this city was founded. After Lanzarote, Jean IV de Béthencourt conquered Fuerteventura in 1402. On a gothic ground plan, the church Santa Maria was built. The church Santa Maria de Betancuria has seven altars. The Marien altar, style Baroque, made of stone, polychrome and gold, is one of the most interesting carvings of Fuerteventura. A transition from the late gothic into a rural naive baroque representation. Because of the frequent robbery attacks of pirates, the church and the city was built on a hill in the high valley and fortified. Betancuria is about 400 meters above the sea. Nevertheless, in the 16th century the church was badly damaged by pirates and was restored with great effort. Betancuria became the first island capital. Today Puerto del Rosario is the capital of the island with 30,000 inhabitants. Betancuria is today a tourist town and with this gothic-baroque St. Mary church worth to be visited. (The NATURAL PARK of Betancuria - These shown cactuses are called Opuntia. With about 190 species, it is the most common species among the cactus plants.)
Craftsmanship offers come from near Morocco, FES: there is a tradition of craftsmanship.

Nach Lanzarote eroberte 1402 Jean IV de Béthencourt Fuerteventura. Nach der sehr kurvenreichen Altantic Straße liegt am Beginn des grünen Tales, Vega de Rio Palmas mit einer besonders interessanten Kirche aus dem 16 JH. mit steinerner Renaissance Fassade und einer barocken Inneneinrichtung. Das Besondere ist allerdings die ca. 24 cm große Alabaster Statue der Hl. Maria, die wahrscheinlich von dem Eroberer
Jean de Béthencourt von der Normandie mitgebracht wurde; das ist seither die Schutzpatronin der Insel. Jedes Jahr gibt es einen Umzug mit dieser Heiligenfigur. 6 km weiter liegt Betancuria nach dem Eroberer Jean de Béthencourt benannt. 1402 wurde diese Stadt gegründet. Auf einem gotischen Grundriss wurde die Kirche Santa Maria aufgebaut. Die Kirche Santa Maria de Betancuria hat sieben Altäre. Der Marien Altar , Stil Barock , aus Stein, polychrom und Gold, ist eine der interessantesten Schnitzereien von Fuerteventura. Ein Übergang von der späten Gotik in eine ländlich naive Barockdarstellung.
Wegen der häufigen räuberischen Überfälle von Freibeutern wurde die Kirche und die Stadt auf eine Anhöhe im Hochtal gebaut und befestigt. Betancuria liegt ca. 400 Meter über dem Meer. Dennoch wurde die Kirche im 16. JH von Freibeutern schwer beschädigt und unter großen Mühen wieder hergestellt. Betancuria wurde zur ersten Inselhauptstadt. Heute ist Puerto del Rosario mit 30000 Einwohnern die Hauptstadt der Insel.
Betancuria ist heute eine Fremdenverkehrsstadt und mit dieser gotisch- barocken Marienkirche auch einen Besuch wert. NP-Becanturia.- Die gezeigte Kaktusart ist die häufigste von ca. 190 Kaktusarten und heißt Oputia.-
Angebote der Handwerkskunst kommen aus dem nahen Marokko, FES: dort ist dieses Handwerk Tradition.

Gleich nach dem Frühstück empfangen wir nun heute die Autoschlüssel für den großen Ford. Bei strömendem Regen erreichen wir den nicht weit entfernten hoteleigenen Parkplatz. Und dort steht er, der Wagen, ein stark verbeulter Ford Focus! Keine Frage, es ist ein Unfallwagen! Doch das Kennzeichen stimmt mit dem auf unserem Vertrag überein. Auch der Schlüssel zur Fahrertür passt, nur lässt sich die Tür nicht öffnen. Also zurück ins Hotel, um zu reklamieren. Ohne ein Wort zu sagen bekommen wir neue Unterlagen, neue Schlüssel und einen nagelneuen Ford Focus.
Und so beginnt bei bereits nachlassendem Regen unsere erste Fahrt im Auto zu den Sehenswürdigkeiten Fuerteventuras, die man bekanntlich buchstäblich an einer Hand abzählen kann, abgesehen von den phantastischen, schier unendlichen Sandstränden, den ungezählten Ziegen und Schafen und vereinzelten Eseln.
Die Fahrt zu den Inseldörfern führt meist über gut asphaltierte Straßen.
Zuerst machen wir einen Abstecher in die Hafenstadt Gran Tarajal. Das ist ein moderner Fischerort mit einer Fußgängerzone und Cafes.
Danach erreichen wir das erste echte Inseldorf, Tuineje. Eine Ortschaft mit Rathaus und Kirche, wo gerade eine Kindtaufe stattfindet.
Weiter im Norden dann – mittlerweile scheint die Sonne – halten wir in Agua de Bueyes mit einem strahlend weißen, hübschen Kirchlein.
Valles de Ortega heißt der nächste Ort. Hier stehen zwei alte Windmühlen,
Auch auf Fuerteventura hat es vulkanische Tätigkeit gegeben. Auf einer Strecke von 16 Kilometern folgen wir einem erkalteten Lavastrom bis nach Pozo Negro, wo sich diese schwarze Lava ins Meer ergießt.
Bei Antigua treffen wir wieder auf die Hauptstraße. Antigua ist ein etwas größerer Ort mit Rathaus, Kirche und Bibliothek.
Auf dem Weg nach Betancuria hat sich ein Abstecher zum hochgelegenen Mirador „Morro Velosa“ wirklich gelohnt. Dem Auge bieten sich von diesem Gipfel herrliche Ausblicke über das Land, geprägt von einer farbenprächtigen Hügellandschaft.
In Betancuria residierte einst der Bischof. Die Kirche fällt durch einen kräftigen, kurzen Viereckturm auf. Neben der Kirche finden wir ein kleines Museum und ein malerisches Restaurant mit einem romantischen Innenhof.
Vega des Rio Palmas heißt die nächste Siedlung auf dieser Autofahrt. Hier findet sich im Zentrum die Kirche „Ermita de la Pena“, wo eine knapp 30 cm hohe Alabasterstatue aufbewahrt wird. Diese Statue ist jedes Jahr im September Ziel der Wallfahrer Fuerteventuras.
Auf der Weiterfahrt durch die Berge bieten sich wundervolle Ausblicke, so auch auf den verlandeten Stausee „Las Penitas“.
An einem Rastplatz begrüßen uns eine ganze Schar niedlicher Streifenhörnchen. Sie sind überaus zutraulich und verzehren dankbar unser Picknickbrot.
