The Morse Historic Design Lecture | Japan, the West, and the Emergence of Japonism in Design
Celebrating the exhibition Passion for the Exotic: Japonism, this lecture examines the historical context of the Japanese influence on European and American design at the turn of the twentieth century, highlighting important museum exhibitions, dealers and collectors of Japanese works that exposed Eastern art and design to Western eyes. In 1853, American Commodore Matthew C. Perry forced Japan’s ruling body, the Tokugawa shogunate, to open Japan to trade relations with the West after nearly 250 years of isolation. A period of rapid change followed and, as the country modernized, old Samurai families and temples were forced to sell their treasures to survive, resulting in lacquers, fans, textiles, bronzes, and ceramics arriving in Western countries.
Béatrice Quette, Curator of the Asian Collections, Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, looks at the design objects and art that fueled the West’s enthusiasm for Japan, provided fresh inspiration for contemporary artists and craftsmen, and gave rise to the movement known as Japonism, with its new ornamental grammar built from Japanese motifs and materials.
The Enid and Lester Morse Historic Design Lecture Series is made possible by the generous support of Mr. and Mr.s Lester S. Morse, Jr.

Morse code Shakespeare American not International SEVEN STAGES OF LIFE
American railroad Morse code, Shakespear's 7 stages of life, starting with mewling and puking in the nurses arms and ending with sans everything, about 25 words per minute. All railroads in Canada and USA used this code from 1850s to 1980s for train orders to keep the trains running on single tracks with sidings. The dispatcher would telegrapg train orders to telegraph operators, who would hand the orders to engineers and conductors telling them where to meet other trains. If you are interested in learning Morse code go to morseKOB.org This website provided the Morse code used here.

National Reconciliation Week - 27 May to 3 June
It is a time to celebrate and build on the relationships shared by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other Australians.
The Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife is raising awareness of the week-long event and encouraging all Australians to join the reconciliation conversation and reflect on our shared histories, contributions and achievements.
On the 20th May, the Foundation hosted the opening of an Aboriginal Art Exhibition, How Ironic, at the Soldiers Institute Mosman, Sydney Harbour National Park. Artworks came from a range of famous Aboriginal artists including the owners of the collection -- Gordon and his wife Elaine Syron.
Reconciliation Week is about showing respect for cultural difference as a fundamental responsibility we owe each other. said Susanna Bradshaw, MC of the exhibition and CEO of the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife.
The Hon Philip Ruddock officially opened the exhibition. Other special guest speakers included;
• John Morse AM, Indigenous Tourism Advisor and former CEO of Tourism Australia
• Dr Jeff McMullen, ABC 60 Minutes, Director Ian Thorpe Foundation and patron
• Adrian Newstead, Coo-ee Aboriginal Art Gallery since 1982
• Magistrate Brian Lulham
• Millie Ingram, CEO of Wyanga Older Peoples Home, Redfern
• Adam Hill
• Michelle Lovegrove, SBS Aboriginal Unit
• Shane Mortimer,
• Steve Miller, Manager of Aboriginal sector development for Museums & Galleries NSW, past curator of Powerhouse Museum.
By bringing together an inspiring group of speakers to highlight the need for a National Aboriginal Art Centre (NAAC), it is hoped that the collections of Shane Mortimer, Val Lhuede and the Syrons can come together to form the basis of the NACC. she said.
Australia is home to a National Art Gallery, and there are Contemporary Art galleries in every state but Australia has never had an art gallery dedicated to Aboriginal art, Australia's original art form and true art history. said Ms Bradshaw.
Supporting projects like this that preserve, protect and share the unique stories of Australia's history is an important aspect of the Foundation's conservation work, said Ms Bradshaw.
The famous David Gulpilil portrait - an Archibald entry in 1988 and Judgement by his Peers were on exhibition as were a collection of traditional and urban artworks and sculptures.
A permanent home for displaying these artworks is yet to be found, but various sites around Sydney Harbour were suggested from Garden to Goat Island (MeMel). Member for Wagga Wagga -- Daryl Maguire, has been a keen supporter and advisor to the Syrons for many years and is spearheading the campaign to find this growing collection of Aboriginal history a home -- described by many including Adrian Newstead as the most important art collection in Australia.

Recorded by someone in the crowd with a fairly high quality audio recorder. this is the first time in 30 years this concert is being heard! Lineup of Sil Simone on guitar, Colleen Allen on sax, Randy Cooke on drums, Chris Brockway (who played in Rik's pre-Triumph band Act III) on bass, and Dave Tkaczuk on keyboards.

DESIGNING FOR THE 5 SENSES - STORYTELLING IN AN OVERSATURATED WORLD
A world oversaturated with noise and light and interruption takes an enormous toll on our sensory systems, impoverishing our experience, attention span and empathy for each other. Itamar Kubovy, executive producer of Pilobolus, and Bruce Mau, chief creative of Massive Change Network and winner of the 2017 Cooper Hewitt National Design Award, talk about the new medium of “live” and unmediated five-senses design as a path to impact and engagement.
Laws Railroad Museum And Historic Site Tour - Laws/Bishop California
This video takes us on a tour of the Laws Railroad Museum and Historic Site in Laws, California which is a few miles outside of Bishop, California.
The museum is free to enter and focuses on railroad and mining history. There are 11 acres of indoor and outdoor exhibits as well as a mock up of a mine and mill.
We visited for at least two hours with Ron Morefield, who gave us a great demonstration of a couple hit and miss engines, plus the history behind several more engines, that are there at the museum. There is also the original depot and the Slim Princess, a narrow gauge train that served the rail stop at Laws. It is a great museum that will take at least a few hours to explore.
Here are links to two related videos about the hit and miss engines.

Lessons in Toolmaking
Tania Larsson (Tetlit Gwich’in and Swedish), a student at the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) in Santa Fe and 2015 participant in the Artist Leadership Program of the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI), describes forging new tools modeled on 3D scans of tools in the museum's collections. She also shares the worst lesson she ever learned about caring for tools. (It involves a dog . . . .)
The NMAI and the IAIA together have developed this opportunity for IAIA students within the museum's larger Artist Leadership Program. Selection for the program is coordinated with the IAIA and is based on students’ proposed research, public art projects, academic presentations, digital portfolios, resumes, artist statements, and letters of support from IAIA faculty. Participating students receive credit for independent study.

Rik Emmett - Living Arts Centre Mississauga - April 4 2003 - full set
From deep in my vault of old recordings! I have been digitizing all of my old tapes, and will add a few of the best to Youtube over the coming months (when time allows).
This show was a great one, one of my favourites, just for the intimacy of the venue, the emotions of the songs, and the overall positive energy of everyone there, especially Rik. I was gutsy enough that night to set up the new minidv camera on the little bar table just a few feet from the stage, thus capturing this great concert. This video is the full second set of the show done on April 4th, 2003, at the modern new Living Arts Centre in Mississauga, Ontario. It's from the era when Rik doing acoustic shows was still a relatively new thing, and in this set, he samples a ton of different styles. Marty Anderson is along with him on keyboards and backing vocals, a talented musician and Rik's Paul Shaffer when he chats between songs. You'll also hear other instruments via backing tracks that appear for some songs. What made this show extra special was that during the encore, Rik brought out his daughter Shannon Emmett, and the two played together on Secret Wishes. Unfortunately, my battery died just as the final encore Fandango was just starting, so I missed that. Enjoy the show!
Song list (with approximate start times):
0:00 Santa Fe Horizon
7:00 I Can't Make You Love Me
16:20 Taste of Steel
24:20 The Last Goodbye
38:10 Let Me Be The One
44:40 24 Hours a Day
46:10 Say Goodbye
48:15 Moonchild
53:15 Libre Animado
1:00:00 Hold On
1:06:50 Three Clouds Across the Moon
1:20:05 Secret Wishes
1:24:00 Fandango
