Tamegroute is well known for its green ceramics. We get this colour by mixing magnesium and copper with a local unsalted liquid and a stone called amyls. After mixing all these ingredients, we bake our products in the oven that has two parts, one for the pottery and the other one for the fire. The baking operation lasts five hours and the grey colour changes into green.

The craftsmen of Tamegroute use techniques passed down through the centuries to produce the village's famous green ceramics.
STORYLINE:
By the side of the main road in Tamegroute, a pottery showroom displays its wares.
Plates, urns and tagines, some decorated with Moroccan desert scenes, others in deep green.
This small village was once an important seat of learning and theology.
But now its main claim to fame is these distinctive ceramics.
Prices range from 5 Moroccan dirhams (0.5 US Dollars) for a cup to up to 80 dirhams (8.20 US Dollars) for plates.
Pottery salesman Noureddine Ait Dani says the goods are a big draw for visitors.
It attracts lot of tourists. As well as the traditional green pottery, we tried to be inventive by adding more colours to give the tourist a wider choice, he says.
Eighty percent of our sales go to tourists while the remaining twenty percent are bought by national visitors, he adds.
The craftsmen are hard at work at a local kiln.
They break up dry clay to prepare for its transformation into beautiful pottery.
The potters are organised into co-operatives, employing dozens of qualified artisans and apprentices.
Tarik Ait Kaddour began learning his trade when he was six years-old.
He covers floor tiles with a grey glaze that will change colour during the baking process.
Tamegroute is well known for its green ceramics. We get this colour by mixing magnesium and copper with a local unsalted liquid and a stone called amyls, he says.
The knowledge has been passed down from generation to generation.
