LUCIANA NOTTURNI - interview on Video Regione TV (Italian channel)
Transcription of the interview:
TV: We are in the heart of Ravenna in Via Francesco Negri 14 in the laboratory of Luciana Notturni owner of the Officina del Mosaico.
Q: How long has the studio been going?
A: We are one of the oldest by now. Since 1970.
Q: What types of products you make here?
A: First of all, we try to carry on the tradition of Ravenna's mosaics, so we make copies and reproductions trying to do it with the most correct methods by copying exactly the colors and “andamento” of our mosaics. The market requires also other genres, that's why we also make mosaics of personal projects, we collaborate with artists, designers, depending on the type of request we receive.
Q: I would like to know your opinion, Can we say that art of mosaic is still alive in Ravenna?
A: Sure. It must stay alive. We try to pursue it vigorously because Ravenna has the most beautiful examples of Byzantine mosaics in the basilicas. Today we can do even more. The mosaic is not only the art of the churches, we also have the Ravenna Schools that teach the Byzantine technique. So, it is alive, but unfortunately, we see that there is a greater interest by foreigners rather than Italians.
Q: By the way, right now, behind us, there is a class running that involves a group of foreigners. Where do they come from?
A: Foreigners come from all over the world, especially from America, Australia, New Zealand.. From distant places, because mosaic is loved there. Foreigners come to Italy and, of course, come to Ravenna because it's the City of Mosaic. They come for culture, hobby, to have a intelligent vacation, and to understand. They are curious. That's positive.
Q: Finally, you talked about personal projects. In case there is anyone interested?
A: We are able to make any kind of mosaic, from pools, to jewels, copies, etc. when someone orders a specific mosaic, we also take care of the design. Any type of request is always welcome.
Mosaic Techniques: DOUBLE REVERSE also called RAVENNA Method
- Very interesting video. It is shown the Ravenna technique step by step (the technique is known as Double Reverse. Dont confuse it with INDIRECT technique, that is another thing!)
The mosaic was made in 2011 and donated to the Fire Department of New York, currently in the Church of our Saviour - Park Avenue 56 NY

As part of my Middle and High School Art curriculum, I teach the art of mosaic. Students love learning the techniques, tools and materials to create rich artworks from glass tiles. To enhance my assignments, by including the history and techniques of ancient mosaics, I was awarded a Faculty Summer Travel Grant to travel to Northern Italy to study with Luciana Notturni at The Mosaic Art School in Ravenna. Ravenna is a World Heritage Site for mosaics, featuring some of the oldest, most beautiful mosaics in the world. I am very excited to be able to share this fascinating experience with my students. Please visit my art website at carol-bowen-art.com to see my mosaic and painted artworks.

Micro mosaic tiles - Smalti Filati
Glass (smalti) is heated and pulled out in order to get a sort of 'spaghetti' that will be broken into shorter pieces. A distinctive feature of micro-mosaics is that the tesserae are usually oblong rather than square.

Still Beating! Hearts for San Francisco 2015
MICHAEL J. KRUZICH— Michael was trained at the renowned Mosaic Art School in Ravenna, Italy by Maestra Luciana Notturni and her colleagues. He maintains a professional studio practice in San Francisco called MKMosaics, producing fine art mosaics and commissions for private and commercial clients. His piece, “Still Beating!” features an image of a heart-rate monitor that creates the outline of the San Francisco skyline and the Golden Gate Bridge.
