Ambassador to Greece Honors Special Olympics Organizers and Athletes 100 Days Before Games
Ambassador Daniel Smith and Mrs. Diane Smith, along with Embassy personnel, welcomed Special Olympics athletes, volunteers, sponsors, Greek government officials and media representatives at a reception March 17 in honor of Special Olympics International and Special Olympics Hellas.
The evening's warm festivities included an address by Ambassador Smith where he spoke about the legacy of Eunice Kennedy Shriver and Sargent Shriver, the founders of Special Olympics, and the message of understanding and respect for individuals with intellectual disabilities that the Special Olympics movement brings to the world.
On behalf of the Greek Government, Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas expressed his support for the Special Olympics and his optimism that despite the difficult financial situation, his country will host successful World Summer Games in Athens June 25-July 4, 2011. His words were echoed by Dimitris Avramopoulos, representing the leader of the opposition New Democracy party.
President of Special Olympics International, Dr. Tim Shriver, conveyed via a videotaped message his best wishes for the Athens Organizing Committee and encouraged the world to come to Athens this summer to be a part of the Games.
Joanna Despotopoulou, President of the Athens 2011 Special Olympics Organizing Committee, flanked by Special Olympics athletes, thanked all those present for their support and promised exceptional Games this summer.
The evening concluded with prominent composer Stephanos Korkolis, who performed the official anthem of Special Olympics, and with the brief words of Special Olympics athlete Olga Dasoura who asked everyone to come to Athens this summer and cheer on the expected 7,000 athletes.
This was an excellent opportunity for Embassy Athens to showcase strong USG support for Special Olympics, a movement founded in the United States, and raise awareness for the rights of and celebrate the achievements of individuals with intellectual disabilities.

Tithorea traditional village, Lamia | best of Greece, the land of myths - top attractions
Tithorea (Greek: Τιθορέα) is a village situated in Phthiotis, central Greece, 166 km north of Athens. It has a population of 3,198 (2011). Tithorea was named after the ancient Phocian town Tithorea, also referred to as Neon, built on the slopes of Mount Parnassus, on the exact location of the modern village of Tithorea.[5] Before 1926 it was known as Velitsa (Βελίτσα),[6] a Slavic toponym.
The ancient city was built after the destruction of the nearby cities by Xerxes' Persian army in 480 BC. According to Herodotus, inhabitants from ruined cities located on the banks of the Cephissus fled to the foot of the Parnassus around Tithorea. After the Persians left, the Phocians settled around Tithorea where a fortress was built. The city reached its peak in the 3rd century BC, when it minted its own coins.
The village Tithorea is situated at the northern foot of the Parnassus, 5 km southwest of Kato Tithorea. It is a traditional settlement with stone houses. The main sights are the ancient wall and castle, the water mill, the mosaic floor of the chapel of Saint John, the gorge of Kachalas, the churches of Avvas Zosimas, Agiarsali and Saint George, the beautiful forest (a NATURA 2000 area) and the cave of Odysseas Androutsos.
The municipal unit consists of the town Kato Tithorea (the seat of the former municipality) and the villages of Agia Marina, Agia Paraskevi, Modi and Tithorea. Liakoura (ancient Lykoreia), the highest summit of Mount Parnassus at a height of 2,457 m, lies in the southernmost part of the municipal unit. The river Cephissus flows in the valley North of the town. Kato Tithorea has a station on the Athens-Thessaloniki railway line.
Beyond Livadi and Eptalofos there is a side to Parnassos that remains ‘undiscovered’. Ancient Lilaia and the hamlets of Polydrossos, Amfiklia, Davlia and Tithorea keep their treasures well hidden, tempting you to find them.
Discover the wonders of nature
Mount Parnassos, one of the renowned National Parks in Greece and also known as the “Mountain of the Light”, is covered with thick forests of black pine and Kefalonian fir. Discover the dozens of trails hidden in its lush nature, as well as the famous Corycian Cave (the place where the Nymphs and the Greek god Pan were worshipped during antiquity).
Central Greece offers a huge range of activities from below sea level to the peaks of imposing mountains all year round. Evia’s trails will introduce you to the true magic of its lush nature. On Mt Parnassos more than 50 trails –among which is the E4 international trail, - as well as old paths, unravel through stunning scenery, perfect for hiking lovers. If you are looking for a skiing holiday, visit Mount Parnassos’ ski center, Greece’s largest and best organized, or the one in Velouhi, where you will also enjoy the outstanding view. The gorge of Panta Vrehei in Evrytania would be the ideal choice for river trekking.

Tiki Athens
