Minaret was reconstructed in Chela (Georgia)
Minaret was reconstructed
By Jasur Mammadov
The minaret that was taken down in a Georgian village was put back up at the mosque on November 27th night. The local government in Adigeni region of Georgia issued a permission to restore the minaret in Chela village on that day, when Muslims had gathered all the necessary documents. The majority of the city council members supported the decision.
The minaret in Chela was first installed in June of this year. Construction was followed by protests of Orthodox Christians. On August 26, the minaret was dismantled by the Revenue Service which claimed that there were problems with the custom's clearance of building materials imported for the minaret.
Muslims are not afraid of restoring the minaret and were expecting that it would be restored as soon as they had all the necessary documents.
Mamuka Vashakmadze, Mufti of Samtskhe-Javakheti region:
We want to say thanks to all organizations, government and president that they helped, us. Nowadays in Georgia democratization rise again, it is a result of democratic elections. Minaret is a symbol of motherland and democracy for us. We started to rebuild minaret as our expression for this symbols. There was different opinion among people, they were against because they thought that we will make loudspeaker and the voice would spread even for kilometers, but it was not true. This is a small village and we don't need that. If we wanted the louder voice, we would put the loudspeaker on the walls inside the building. We analyze, that here are orthodox people, with whom we live together for 30-40 years, and we had no problems, on the contrary, we helped each other. We have friendly relationship. We listened their opinion and we put up with it. We were not aggressive toward them neither religious attitudes nor as a inhabitants of neighborhood. Yesterday there were people from Georgian church, they prayed here, but we did not disturb them in praying. God created people for praying and we all pray. We have nothing against praying, church and orthodox people.
Jambul Abuladze, Imam of Chela Mosque:
We are happy about what happened, that minaret returned on its place. For this I want to say thanks to our new government. We hope, that it will not one time decision and it will continue, this kind of democratic processes. What about religious minorities, previous situation was bad, but we hope this will improve in future. Now we are not under any pressure, minaret returned on its place and we live in a normal way.
Representative of Georgian ombudsman office Giorgi Garsevanishvili visited the mosque and became interested with situation in the area.
Giorgi Garsevanishvili ,representative of Ombudsman office in Georgia:
According to the constitution every person has right of religion freedom. Minaret reconstructed again in Chela, that means, that religion minorities, muslims in this case must have possibility to pray freely.

Georgian Muslims demand new mosque from government
The Muslim community in Georgia´s Black Sea resort of Batumi had been asking the authorities to build a second mosque for many years.
Frustrated over a perceived lack of interest form the state, a group of Muslims decided to take matters into their own hands.
The group founded in January had within a month had collected 12,000 signatures in support of building a new mosque in Batumi, Georgia´s second largest city and capital of the country´s southwestern Adjara Autonomous Republic.
The signatures were then forwarded to the president, prime minister and other senior officials.
A dedicated fund was also created, and on September 7 the group purchased a plot of land. They are now awaiting permission to start building a new mosque.
