Bethlehem
Bethlehem (Arabic: بيت لحم Bayt Laḥm (help·info) or Bēt Laḥm, lit House of Meat; Hebrew: בֵּית לֶחֶם Bēṯ Leḥem, Modern: Bet Leḥem, IPA: [bet ˈleχem], lit House of Bread; Greek: Βηθλεὲμ, Vithleém) is a city located in the central West Bank and approximately 8 kilometers (5.0 mi) south of Jerusalem, with a population of about 30,000 people.[4][5] It is the capital of the Bethlehem Governorate of the Palestinian National Authority. The economy is primarily tourist-driven.[6][7]
The Hebrew Bible identifies Bethlehem as the city David was from and the location where he was crowned as the king of Israel. The New Testament identifies Bethlehem as the birthplace of Jesus of Nazareth. The town is inhabited by one of the oldest Christian communities in the world, although the size of the community has shrunk due to emigration.
The city was sacked by the Samaritans in 529, but rebuilt by the Byzantine emperor Justinian I. Bethlehem was conquered by the Arab Caliphate of 'Umar ibn al-Khattāb in 637, who guaranteed safety for the city's religious shrines. In 1099, Crusaders captured and fortified Bethlehem and replaced its Greek Orthodox clergy with a Latin one. The Latin clergy were expelled after the city was captured by Saladin, the sultan of Egypt and Syria. With the coming of the Mamluks in 1250, the city's walls were demolished, and were subsequently rebuilt during the rule of the Ottoman Empire.[8]
The British wrested control of the city from the Ottomans during World War I and it was to be included in an international zone under the 1947 United Nations Partition Plan for Palestine. Jordan annexed the city in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. It was occupied by Israel in the 1967 Six-Day War. Since 1995, Bethlehem has been governed by the Palestinian National Authority.[8]
Bethlehem has a Muslim majority, but is also home to one of the largest Palestinian Christian communities. Bethlehem's chief economic sector is tourism which peaks during the Christmas season when Christian pilgrims throng to the Church of the Nativity. Bethlehem has over thirty hotels and three hundred handicraft work shops.[9] Rachel's Tomb, an important Jewish holy site, is located at the northern entrance of Bethlehem

Muslim prayers on the last Friday of Ramadan
(31 May 2019) Tens of thousands of Muslims descended on the Old City of Jerusalem for the last Friday prayers of Ramadan, Islam's holiest month.
Israeli police heightened security in the Old City, deploying security forces around Damascus gate after an alleged Palestinian attacker was killed after stabbing and injuring two Israelis earlier Friday.
Police said one Israeli was in critical condition, while the second was in moderate condition.
Meanwhile, Palestinian worshippers who could not make it to Jerusalem, prayed near a Bethlehem checkpoint after another shooting in the area was reported.
Israeli police shot and killed 16-year-old Abdullah Ghaith near the West Bank city of Bethlehem, the Palestinian Health Ministry said, adding that another 21-year-old Palestinian was wounded by a live bullet to the stomach.
Israeli police said that the Palestinian teenager was shot while attempting to climb over the heavily guarded separation barrier from Bethlehem into Jerusalem.
The police added that they were launching a probe into the incident.
The boy's father, Louai Ghaith, said his son had been trying to enter Jerusalem to pray at Al-Aqsa Mosque for the holy day.
Ghaith's body was brought to a Bethlehem hospital, where his distraught family identified him.
COGAT, the Israeli defence body responsible for Palestinian civilian affairs, said it eases tight movement restrictions on Palestinian residents of the West Bank travelling to Jerusalem for Friday prayers at Al-Aqsa Mosque.
Women of all ages can enter for the occasion, as well as men over the age of 40 who undergo a background check.
Younger Palestinian men must request an entry permit from the military, which are difficult to obtain.

Jerusalem, a Middle Eastern city west of the Dead Sea, has been a place of pilgrimage and worship for Jews, Christians and Muslims since the biblical era. Its Old City has significant religious sites around the Temple Mount compound, including the Western Wall (sacred to Judaism), the Church of the Holy Sepulchre (a Christian pilgrimage site) and the Dome of the Rock (a 7th-century Islamic shrine with a gold dome).

INSIDE THE NATIVITY CHURCH -BETHLEHEM
WEST BANK: BETHLEHEM: CHRISTMAS MASS
Natural Sound
Latin Patriarch Michel Sabbah's midnight mass capped a joyous day of festivities in Bethlehem on Friday.
But the number of pilgrims in attendance on Christmas Eve seemed far short of the 60-thousand that the Palestinian organizers had hoped for.
Security fears apparently kept many away.
U-S authorities, citing terrorist threats, have warned overseas travelers to exercise caution at large gatherings like this one.
The Christmas mass was held in the church of nativity in Manger square.
The church is built over the grotto where Christian tradition says Jesus' birth took place.
The senior Roman Catholic official in the Holy Land delivered a Christmas call for
reconciliation in the new millennium, capping a year in which Israel and the Palestinians drew closer to peace.
Yasser Arafat, Chairman of the Palestinian Authority, attended the mass.
The heavy security presence belied Sabbah's message of reconciliation, delivered in the Church of the Nativity in Manger Square.

My name is Zahi Shaked
In 2000 I became a registered liscenced tourist guide.
My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this calling in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)
Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, glide over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and see the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

SUMMARY
=======
Bethlehem (; Arabic: بيت لحم Bayt Lahm Arabic pronunciation: [beːt.laħm], House of Meat; Hebrew: בֵּית לֶחֶם Bet Lehem, Hebrew pronunciation: [bet ˈleχem], House of Bread; Ancient Greek: Βηθλεέμ Greek pronunciation: [bɛːtʰle.ém]; Latin: Bethleem; initially named after Canaanite fertility god Lehem) is a Palestinian city located in the central West Bank, Palestine, about 10 km (6.2 miles) south of Jerusalem. Its population is approximately 25,000 people. It is the capital of the Bethlehem Governorate. The economy is primarily tourist-driven.The earliest known mention of the city was in the Amarna correspondence of 1350–1330 BCE during its habitation by the Canaanites. The Hebrew Bible, which says that the city of Bethlehem was built up as a fortified city by Rehoboam, identifies it as the city David was from and where he was crowned as the king of Israel. The Gospels of Matthew and Luke identify Bethlehem as the birthplace of Jesus. Bethlehem was destroyed by the Emperor Hadrian during the second-century Bar Kokhba revolt; its rebuilding was promoted by Empress Helena, mother of Constantine the Great, who commissioned the building of its great Church of the Nativity in 327 CE. The church was badly damaged by the Samaritans, who sacked it during a revolt in 529, but was rebuilt a century later by Emperor Justinian I.
Bethlehem became part of Jund Filastin following the Muslim conquest in 637. Muslim rule continued in Bethlehem until its conquest in 1099 by a crusading army, who replaced the town's Greek Orthodox clergy with a Latin one. In the mid-13th century, the Mamluks demolished the city's walls, which were subsequently rebuilt under the Ottomans in the early 16th century. Control of Bethlehem passed from the Ottomans to the British at the end of World War I. Bethlehem came under Jordanian rule during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War and was later captured by Israel in the 1967 Six-Day War. Since the 1995 Oslo Accords, Bethlehem has been administered by the Palestinian Authority.Bethlehem now has a Muslim majority, but is still home to a significant Palestinian Christian community. Bethlehem's chief economic sector is tourism, which peaks during the Christmas season when Christians make pilgrimage to the Church of the Nativity, as they have done for almost 2,000 years. Bethlehem has over 30 hotels and 300 handicraft workshops. Rachel's Tomb, an important Jewish holy site, is located at the northern entrance of Bethlehem.
Going to school under Israeli occupation
Omar Hajajleh is a local school bus driver in the occupied West Bank village of al-Walaja.
Al-Walaja lies between the city of Bethlehem and occupied East Jerusalem.
In 2015, Israel built its separation wall directly through Hajajleh’s land, cutting off his family home from the rest of the village.
The only way for the family to access the village is through a tunnel and past a steel gate that only they can open with a remote control.
A series of walls and barriers placed by Israeli occupation forces separates the children of al-Walaja village from their school.
Hajajleh found himself uniquely positioned to take local children to school as only he has access to the valley leading to the school.
As is shown in the video, Hajajleh takes the children halfway to school in one bus and walks them past a permanent Israeli roadblock. He then loads the children onto a second vehicle and continues to school.
Hajajleh fears that the road he takes may soon be closed off by the wall, which is being expanded by Israeli occupation forces.
