Three Lessons I Have Learned From Rwandan Communities | Joel Olson | TEDxLangleyED
What do you think of when you hear the name “Rwanda”? The first thing that comes to mind for many people is “genocide”. However, after moving to Rwanda 18 months ago, Joel has experienced a powerfully different Rwanda.
Joel will share three valuable lessons that he has learned about community while living in Rwanda. They apply to all of us regardless of our background, life experience, or vocation.
These lessons from the Rwandan people should inspire us to look within our communities and ourselves in order to create transformation. The country of Rwanda and the people have a lot to teach us about forgiveness, reconciliation and the power of community. Joel Olson was born and raised in BC's Lower Mainland, mostly residing in Langley, BC. Joel is married to Amy and together they have three children aged 10, 8 and 5 years old. He worked as a Grade 6 & 7 teacher and educational leader in the Langley School District from 2005-2016. Joel has a Masters of Education in Educational Leadership (K-12). His thesis research included improving parent-teacher communication using technology, with a focus on effective practice for teachers and school leaders.
In August 2016, Joel and his family moved to Rwanda, Africa to use his passion for educational leadership. He is currently working with the Wellspring Foundation for Education as a technical consultant and education adviser in a Kigali school. He comes alongside school leaders, develops teachers, involves parents, and partners with the local community to implement sustainable initiatives at the Wellspring Academy. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at

Nordic Approach - Producing Quality in Rwanda
One of the core objectives for Nordic Approach is to work at origin to identify, improve, select, and import the best coffees from the most interesting origins. We believe in transparency throughout the chain and premiums going back to the producers is the only way to a sustainable quality coffee production.
To fulfill this goal, we have to do a lot of work on the ground, and this short film serves as an example of how we work to create quality at origin.
The film is recorded at Motherland Farmers Coffee Washing Station in the Nyamagabe district in Southern Rwanda, and at the Rwanda Trading Company dry mill in the capitol Kigali.
We are shareholders and are managing quality on this washing station, and this gives us unique opportunities to experiment on agricultural practices, processing and to share our knowledge with all the other producers we work with worldwide.
That being said, the processing techniques and concepts we see in this film are not specific to this single washing station only, but represent a general idea of how we work with the concepts of cherry selection, wet milling, grading, hand sorting, drying, lot separation, and cupping. Working long-term with cooperatives, associations, and farmers enables us to do increased lot separation and more selective buying. Through the premiums we pay every year, the farmer is able to invest and fine-tune quality, and we are able to access increasingly good coffee year after year.

Back to the Motherland- East Africa
Africa is home, even if I may not know where I am originally from.
Hello and Welcome!
My name is Jeneva and my brand is Where is Neva. ( Since I was a child I learned about my history, American history and the struggles my ancestors endured and my peers are still enduring, to make a place home that isn't originally there home.
Beyond the history books, documentaries and family conversations I dreamt about going back to the continent that my ancestors were taken from. My dreams became a reality back in 2016 when I was given the chance to go to Tanzania with my university. I fell in love and 3 years later I decided to go back...
My mission is to share my truth when I was living in East Africa (Tanzania, Rwanda, and Kenya) for a few months, through storytelling and video. I will express the love I received, the hardships I went through and my traveling experience as an African American Woman who is also traveling solo. I hope my journeys inspire you, motivate you, teach you and bring you joy.
Lets heal the world and change the narrative!

KWIBUKA 25 is a time to Remember by honoring the memory of the over one million victims, Unite through the strength and dignity of our nation, and Renew our determination to build a prosperous future for generations to come.
Lyrics: Translated in English
QUARTER CENTURY
....................................
Beautiful Rwanda
Rwanda, my motherland
We’re stepping towards a brighter future
Quarter Century has so far gone by
And we’re now economically strong
We must indeed keep the momentum (*4)
Together we stand
Life went on
The voiceless can now enjoy full dignity
Hope flourishes the way our sun shines
As it’s said, “the best is yet to come”
A dazzling future is already shaped.
Beautiful Rwanda
Rwanda, my motherland
We’re stepping towards a brighter future
Quarter Century has so far gone by
And we’re now economically strong
We must indeed keep the momentum (*4)
We’ve got visionary people
We’ve got heroes to be proud of
Our shared Rwandan Spirit is a foundation
Since we’re clearly aware of our past
Ease your mind, we, your children, will never betray you
Beautiful Rwanda
Rwanda, my motherland
We’re stepping towards a brighter future
Quarter Century has so far gone by
And we’re now economically strong
We must indeed keep the momentum (*4)

National Anthem of Rwanda - Rwanda Nziza
The national anthem of Rwanda
Lyrics in Kinyarwanda:
Rwanda nziza Gihugu cyacu
Wuje imisozi, ibiyaga n'ibirunga
Ngobyi iduhetse gahorane ishya.
Reka tukurate tukuvuge ibigwi
Wowe utubumbiye hamwe twese
Abanyarwanda uko watubyaye
Berwa, sugira, singizwa iteka.
Horana Imana, murage mwiza
Ibyo tugukesha ntibishyikirwa;
Umuco dusangiye uraturanga
Ururimi rwacu rukaduhuza
Ubwenge, umutima,amaboko yacu
Nibigukungahaze bikwiye
Nuko utere imbere ubutitsa.
Abakurambere b'intwari
Bitanze batizigama
Baraguhanga uvamo ubukombe
Utsinda ubukoroni na mpatsibihugu
Byayogoje Afurika yose
None uraganje mu bwigenge
Tubukomeyeho uko turi twese.
Komeza imihigo Rwanda dukunda
Duhagurukiye kukwitangira
Ngo amahoro asabe mu bagutuye
Wishyire wizane muri byose
Urangwe n'ishyaka, utere imbere
Uhamye umubano n'amahanga yose
Maze ijabo ryawe riguhe ijambo.
English Translation:
Rwanda, our beautiful and dear country
Adorned of hills, lakes and volcanoes
Motherland, would be always filled of happiness
Us all your children: Abanyarwanda
Let us sing your glare and proclaim your high facts
You, maternal bosom of us all
Would be admired forever, prosperous and cover of praises.
Invaluable heritage, that God protects to you
You filled us priceless goods
Our common culture identifies us
Our single language unifies us
That our intelligence, our conscience and our forces
Fill you with varied riches
For an unceasingly renewed development.
Our valorous ancestors
Gave themselves bodies and souls
As far as making you a big nation
You overcame the colonial-imperialistic yoke
That has devastated Africa entirely
And has your joy of your sovereign independence
Acquired that constantly we will defend.
Maintain this cape, beloved Rwanda,
Standing, we commit for you
So that peace reigns countrywide
That you are free of all hindrance
That your determination hires progress
That you have excellent relations with all countries
And that finally your pride is worth your esteem.
