California starts to recover from powerful storm and braces for new one
A fierce storm, dubbed bombogenesis or weather bomb, has eased in southern California, while pressing on further north in the US state.Torrential rain, flash floods and mud slides wreaked havoc on Friday and early Saturday, killing at least five people.
Metrologists said it was the worst storm to hit California in years.
Forecasters warned residents in the north, including San Francisco, to expect more heavy rain on Sunday. Meteorologists described the storm as bombogenesis, an intense extra-tropical cyclonic low-pressure area, or a weather bomb.
One man was killed after a tree fell and pulled a power line on to his car in the Sherman Oaks area of Los Angeles.A second person died in a vehicle when it was submerged by a flash flood in the town of Victorville.
Two others died in car accidents in the San Diego area, and another person was found dead after being swept into a creek in Ventura County.
Evacuation orders were lifted in the towns of Duarte on Saturday afternoon (local time). The north of the state has already experienced fears of flooding at the tallest dam in the country, Oroville Dam, when more than 180,000 residents were evacuated from their homes last week.

California Fault Could Cause Magnitude 7.4 Earthquake - New Study
An earthquake fault running from San Diego Bay to Los Angeles is capable of producing a magnitude-7.4 earthquake that could affect some of the region's most densely populated areas, according to a study released Tuesday.
The study looked at the Newport-Inglewood and Rose Canyon systems — previously thought to be separate — and concluded they actually form a continuous fault that runs underwater from San Diego Bay to Seal Beach in Orange County and on land through the Los Angeles basin.
The fault poses a significant hazard to coastal Southern California and Tijuana, Mexico, according to the study.
It could produce up to a magnitude-7.3 quake if the offshore segments rupture and a magnitude-7.4 quake if the onshore segment also ruptures, according to the study by Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego.
Even a moderate quake on the fault could have a major impact on the region, according to Valerie Sahakian, the study's lead author.
This system is mostly offshore but never more than four miles from the San Diego, Orange County, and Los Angeles County coast, Sahakian was quoted as saying in a press release from the American Geophysical Union.
The fault's most recent major rupture occurred in 1933 in Long Beach and produced a magnitude-6.4 earthquake that killed 115 people.
The study looked at data from previous and new seismic surveys that included sonar studies of the offshore fault. Researchers looked at four segments of the fault that were offset — known as stepovers — and found the disconnections weren't wide enough to prevent the entire offshore section of the fault from rupturing.

Police Shoot and Kill Dog in Front of Owner (Graphic Video)
Leon Rosby arrived at 137th Street and Jefferson Avenue in Hawthorne on Sunday evening to videotape a police standoff. He brought along his 2-year-old Rottweiler, Max.
He put the dog on a leash and began filming. Hawthorne police deemed Rosby's actions interference and placed him under arrest. By this point, Max was in the backseat of Rosby's car, but the arrest upset him. He began barking, jumped out of the car and lunged at officers.*
Leon Rosby was cuffed by Hawthorne police officers after recording them with his phone. Then, when his dog jumped and ran to Rosby and the officers, the officers shot the dog in the head, leaving it writhing in the street until its death. Was the shooting necessary? Were the officers' excuses justifiable? Cenk Uygur, Ana Kasparian, and the TYT Supreme Court weigh in on the situation.
