The Petrifying Well at Mother Shipton's Cave in Knaresborough North Yorkshire England 2015
Mysterious Mother Shipton's Cave and Petrifying Well, England
There is a mystical well that converts objects to stone. Located on the banks of the river Nidd in North Yorkshire. Any object touched by the well’s dripping; naturally turn to stone within a few months. Some of these relics can be spotted even today, like a Victorian top hat and a lady’s bonnet from the 1800s – both converted to solid stone. More recently, people have left teddy bears, kettles, and even a bicycle in the petrifying well, with similar results.
HISTORY
History shows that the well wasn’t always known for its petrifying qualities. The earliest written reference to the well dates back to 1538 when John Leyland visited for the first time.
He noticed that many locals drank from and showered under the water, as they thought it to have miraculous healing powers. In the early 1600s samples of water were examined by a medical physician. His report concluded that the waters from the well were a miracle cure for “any flux of the body”!
LEGENDARY
For many centuries, locals believed that the Petrifying Well was cursed by the devil – a myth fueled by the fact that the side of the well looks like a giant’s skull. According to popular legend, Mother Shipton – the daughter of a local prostitute – was born in a cave near the well. Mother Shipton is said to have been hideously ugly since birth, and people believed her father was the devil himself. As she grew older, the strange woman displayed prophecy powers. She is said to have accurately prophesied the Great Fire of London in 1666, the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588
THE TRUTH
However, there's nothing supernatural about the petrifaction process - it's actually caused by the water's high mineral content. It’s made up of tufa and travertine rock, which gives all objects that touch the well's water a stone-like appearance after several months.

Thanks for watching...
A petrifying well is a well which gives objects a stone-like appearance.
If an object is placed into such a well and left there for a period of weeks or months the object acquires a stony exterior. At one time this property was believed to be a result of magic or witchcraft, but it is an entirely natural phenomenon and due to a process of evaporation and deposition in waters with an unusually high mineral content.
This process of petrifying is not to be confused with petrification wherein the constituent molecules of the original object are replaced (and not merely overlaid) with molecules of stone or mineral.
Notable examples of petrifying wells in England are the spring at Mother Shipton's Cave in Knaresborough and Matlock Bath, in Derbyshire, while in Ireland, such wells were noted by John Rutty on Howth Head, among other locations.

Mother Shipton A 15th-century English witch and seer who supposedly prophesied scientific inventions, new technology, wars and politics through several centuries, all written in crude rhymes. The film, which is a Big Talk Pictures Production, with backing from Studio Canal, Film4 and the BFI, shot at several locations in Yorkshire including Fountains Abbey and Mother Shipton's Cave.

Ursula Southeil , better known as Mother Shipton, is said to have been an English soothsayer and prophetess. The first publication of her prophecies, which did not appear until 1641, eighty years after her reported death, contained a number of mainly regional predictions, but only two prophetic verses – neither of which foretold the End of the World, despite widespread assumptions to that effect. One of the most notable editions of her prophecies was published in 1684.It states that she was born in Knaresborough, Yorkshire, in a cave now known as Mother Shipton's Cave which, along with the Petrifying Well and associated parkland, is operated as a visitor attraction.
