Mother Teresa's Mother House of the Missionaries of Charity, Kolkata
The Mother House of the Missionaries of Charity, located at 54A, A.J.C. Bose Road, Calcutta, is the headquarters of the international religious congregation of the Missionaries of Charity. It has been home to Mother Teresa and her sisters from February 1953 to the present day. It is here that Mother lived, prayed, worked, and guided her religious family of sisters spread across the world. It is here that her body was laid to rest.
On October 7, 1950, Mother Teresa and the small community formed by her former pupils was labeled as the Diocesan Congregation of the Calcutta Diocese, and thus received the permission from the Vatican to exist as a Church subject. Their mission was to care for (in Mother Teresa's words) the hungry, the naked, the homeless, the crippled, the blind, the lepers, all those people who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared for throughout society, people that have become a burden to the society and are shunned by everyone. It began as a small community with 12 members in Calcutta, and today it has over 4,500 Sisters running orphanages, AIDS hospices, charity centres worldwide, and caring for refugees, the blind, disabled, aged, alcoholics, the poor and homeless and victims of floods, epidemics and famine in Asia, Africa, Latin America, North America, Europe and Australia.
In 1965, by granting a Decree of Praise, Pope Paul VI granted Mother Teresa's request to expand her congregation to other countries. The Congregation started to grow rapidly, with new homes opening all over the globe. The congregation's first house outside India was in Venezuela, and others followed in Rome and Tanzania, and eventually in many countries in Asia, Africa, and Europe, including Albania. In addition, the first home of the Missionaries of Charity in the United States was established in the South Bronx, New York. In the USA, the Missionaries of Charity are affiiated with the Council of Major Superiors of Women Religious, a body of female religious, representing 20% of American nuns. They are identified by the wearing of religious habits, and loyalty to church teaching. By 1996, the Organisation was operating 517 missions in more than 100 countries and today is assisted by over one million co-workers and many donations from ordinary people.

Visiting Mother Teresa Shishu Bhavan Children's orphanage - Kolkata
Going back to visit Shishu Bhaven, the children's orphanage at the Missionary of Charity in Kolkata. During my visit, I got to meet some of the children and learn more about how the sisters care for them. I am here in Kolkata where I will spend more days photographing life at this orphanage, a place I once called 'home' when I lived there with Mother Teresa.
I will also photograph other aspects of Kolkata life for the exhibition in September.
I will be holding a photo exhibition in Kolkata in September on my memories of Mother Teresa to mark her canonization. I need to raise £6,500 for expenses such as printing and framing photos etc. This is my Kickstarter appeal - please watch it and if you can make a contribution, no matter how small, it would be so appreciated.

International Day of Service @ Missionaries of Charity
International Day of Service was celebrated by Senior Going Global Club of SAI International School at the Mother Teresa Center. A small group of students spent the morning passing out snacks and juice to the elderly, physically and mentally challenged residents. Afterward they spent time speaking, laughing, singing and even dancing. It was truly a heartwarming way to spend the morning in the service of others. Dancing was by far the favourite activity. Both the students and the elderly danced with big smiles from ear to ear. Even “Rangabhati” was sung vigorously as most the residents knew the song by heart.
Visiting this place is both happy and sad at the same time, torn between smiles and the feeling that these people are left with no one. Hats off the the MTC Sisters who sacrifice daily to provide their minute by minute needs.
International Day of Services is a SAIONEER favourite. The thrill of stepping out of your regular routine to help another human being is one we all love.
Let’s end with the words of Mother Teresa herself “Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier.”

Film Trailer – MOTHER TERESA
In an acclaimed film portrayal, Olivia Hussey illuminates the life story of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, the selfless missionary who brought hope, love and salvation to the poorest of the poor.
In an acclaimed film portrayal, Olivia Hussey illuminates the life story of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, the selfless missionary who brought hope, love and salvation to the poorest of the poor. The movie examines the fundamental moments of Mother Teresa's life from her childhood in Albania in the 1920s to her first calling as a nun, the decision to leave her order and live with the poorest of the poor, the vicissitudes of founding the Congregation of the Missionaries of Charity, and her great work of service in Calcutta and the rest of the world.
A shrewd diplomat and an indomitable force, Mother Teresa was unwilling to accept what others deemed impossible, fearlessly fighting for the unloved and the forgotten. She was regarded as one of the most significant personalities of the 20th Century, although she never owned more than a white and blue sari. She influenced the decisions of the most powerful men on Earth, although she always stayed close to the poorest people of the world.
The film follows her through the slums of Calcutta as she mingled closely with her people, dispensing help, joy and smiles to everyone, with her loving embraces, and also shows her stubbornness with the people who wanted to block her way.
Her faith and good works transcended hardships and ultimately earned her international acclaim, including the Nobel Peace prize. The many small miracles, great charity and humble triumphs of Mother Teresa will inspire you in this poignant tale of a modern-day saint.
