Mothman: America's Notorious Winged Monster
In this special Halloween episode of Monstrum, I travel to the town of Point Pleasant, WV to research the complicated history of the flying creature. You'll learn how the town was forever changed by the myth of the Mothman. Newspapers gave the winged, red-eyed creature its name after it was spotted on November 15, 1966—an incident followed by almost a hundred other eyewitness accounts. Exactly 13 months later, the paranormal activity culminated in a very real tragedy--the collapse of Point Pleasant’s Silver Bridge. Some claimed Mothman was the cause of the accident, others say he was actually meant to forewarn the town of the catastrophe. The accident claimed 47 lives, so why does the town of Point Pleasant celebrate the monster with a festival every year and adorn their main street with a statue of his likeness?
You'll see how Mothman became a global phenomenon outside of West Virginia by the famous book The Mothman Prophecies and its later film adaptation. Monstrum looks at the lingering effects of the real events that made the Mothman notorious, interviewing local Point Pleasant experts and hunting for the Mothman at some of its most famous haunts. #mothman #cryptid #mothman_prophecies #MonstrumPBS

Silver Bridge Memorial and the Mothman (Gallipolis)
The Silver Bridge, crossing the Ohio River, was built in 1928. It tragically collapsed in December of 1967. Along the river on the Ohio side is a small memorial. On the West Virginia side is an interesting statue of a creature that came to be known as the Mothman. Supposedly, the Mothman had something to do with the disaster. (Video recorded April 2015)

The Legend of Mothman
When people think of Point Pleasant West Virginia they think of the Mothman. The story drew attention from News agencies all across the nation, and to this day even compels visitors to travel to Point Pleasant. This is the story of the Mothman.
The story of the Mothman begins an hour and a half away from Point Pleasant in ClendenIn West Virginia. In November of 1966 some gravediggers working in a cemetery Saw something flying around near the trees that they could only describe as a “Brown Human Being”
Fast Forward just three days later to the TNT Zone just outside of Point Pleasant two couples were driving along in their car when they spotted a large creature about seven feet tall, it had eyes that glowed red when the light hit then. The couples reported that the mothman chased them down as they drove into town even able to keep up with them at speeds nearing 100 miles per hour.
Over the next year Mothman would be seen by more and more residents. Everyone from Volunteer firefighters to a man who claimed the mothman abducted his dog. When mothman came around many reported hearing disembodied voices, and having electronics act up. Some even liken him to the lesser known Grinning Man of West Virginia seen in Parkersburg around the same time.
Sightings of mothman continued, then on December 15th 1967 the Silver Bridge that spanned the Ohio River collapsed causing the death of 46 people. Some people considered the mothman responsible for this collapse and others believe he was trying to warn against it.
Today over 50 years later the Mothman still fascinates people around the world and draws visitors to the TNT Zone. Point Pleasant doesn’t shy away from the legend of the Mothman even building a statue of it in town. As for sightings of the Mothman while they no longer gain as much attention as they once did they have continued, and many claim to have seen Mothman before disasters such as Chernobyl, 9/11, The I-35 Bridge Collapse, and even Fukushima. Over the past few years Mothman has been mostly sighted around Chicago which some believe is signaling a oncoming disaster which some believe may be the collapse of the I-80 bridge. At the time of recording though the bridge is still standing and scheduled to have repairs started on it soon.

Point Pleasant is a small close-knit community just across the Ohio River from Gallipolis. Like many little towns in West Virgina, it’s quiet and keeps to itself. It’s surrouned by woodlands and winding roads once these roads get you to next small town the cycle repeats. Also like many town in WV it has a history of strange happens, it would start with sightings of the Mothman in 1966 and end with the collapse of the Silver Bridge in ’67.

Some say the Mothman was a harbinger of death and destruction? That remains to be seen and is still widely discussed. However on December 15, 1967 a disaster would befall Point Pleasant and afterwards the Mothman would seem to fade away or perhaps just forgotten.
