Kiev's Oleg Antonov Aviation Museum Visit : Tu134 Tu154 IL62 & more @ Kiev Zhuliany Airport
In July 2019, I had the opportunity to visit one of the most famous aviation museum in eastern Europe : Oleg Antonov museum located near the Kiev Zhuliany airport's terminal building.
The entrance fee is super cheap (as a lot of things in Ukraine btw) and you get tons of old soviet aircrafts so it is really worth a visit. You can even enter in some aircrafts and it is a nice place to see Zhuliany's traffic for plane spotting.
Here is a short overview of the museum, including some inside visits.

THE SIGHT & THE SOUND 5/7 : Motor Sich AN-24 UR-MSI documentary from Zaporizhia to Kiev
FLIGHT #5
AN-24RV UR-MSI Zaporizhia - Kiev (IEV), March 20, 2014
In March 2014 I still had some unused vacation days from the previous year and so I decided to do a little tour of the network of Motor Sich Airlines, based in Zaporizhia, in the Central South Eastern part of the Ukraine. My pal, Steve Kinder needed no persuasion and instantly agreed to join. The plan was to sample the Classic AN-24 in depth because the AN-148 and AN-74 of Motor Sich are by no doubt bound to survive their older sister by years to come.
This video features another early morning flight from Zaporizhia to Kiev-Zhuliany on Day Four. There is nothing much to see at dawn at the abandoned airport of Zaporizhia except a few straying dogs safeguarding the terminal and the fence and a few YAK-40s at some distance and a large number of IL-76 parked far away in the middle of nowhere. Learning from experience, we arrived just in time, for unlocking the old Soviet style terminal for ticket and baggage registration for our flight, being the only flight operating this morning out of Zaporizhia. Sitting in the airport lounge sipping some coffee, again we could hear the running engine of our daily shuttle service to Kiev, long before sighting her. Again, UR-MSI it was, and again boarding was speedy after bidding farewell to Alexey Polyakov, who came out all the way at this time of the day. We could see familiar faces amongst the passengers who apparently are commuters shuttling every day back and forth between Zaporizhia and Kiev. Like the previous day strong head winds let us enjoy more than 100 minutes onboard UR-MSI before landing in cloudy Kiev. Soon affter arrival it was raining cats and dogs and we were expected by a well-known aviation expert to guide is through the world famous aviation museum at Zhuliany airport and later by one the most famous aviation photographer of the Ukraine Vitaliy Nesenyuk, who guided us over the airport and let us witness Touch & Go training flights of the Indian Air Force AN-30. Vitaliy then introduced Steve and myself to the Head of Public Relations of Zhuliany airport, Galina Bogdanenko who has plans to promote Zhuliany airport to the international spotting scene by offering day tours led by Vitaliy and his spotter friends.
History of AN-24RV UR-MSI
Airframe 27307608 was manufactured 1972 at the Aviant Plant and delivered April 19, 1972 to the Bykovo Division of Aeroflot, registered CCCP-47699. She was leased from June 5, 1992 until September 1995 to Mas Air Havayollari, Turkey, registered TC-MOB. After return to Bykovo Avia September 1995, TC-MOB was registered RA-47699 and later reported stored at Bykovo airport. RA-47699 was sold to an unknown Ukrainian buyer January 27, 1998 and registered UR-47699, based at Kiev Zhuliany airport. UR-47699 was sold to Motor Sich Airlines August 2001 and registered UR-MSI. Based at the Motor Sich Airlines ramp
of Zaporizhia airport, UR-MSI operates scheduled and charter flights for the Motor Sich Group.

The Antonov An-24 (Russian/Ukrainian: Антонов Ан-24) (NATO reporting name: Coke) is a 44-seat twin turboprop transport/passenger aircraft designed in 1957 in the Soviet Union by the Antonov Design Bureau[1] and manufactured by Kiev, Irkutsk and Ulan-Ude Aviation Factories.

First flown in 1959, the An-24 was produced in some 1,000 units of various versions; 880 are still in service worldwide, mostly in the CIS and Africa, with a total of 297 Antonov An-24 aircraft in airline service, as of May 2010. As of 2014, 133 units were still in airline service.
It was designed to replace the veteran piston Ilyushin Il-14 transport on short to medium haul trips, optimised for operating from rough strips and unprepared airports in remote locations.[2] The high-wing layout protects engines and blades from debris, the power-to-weight ratio is higher than that of many comparable aircraft and the machine is rugged, requiring minimal ground support equipment.
Due to its rugged airframe and good performance, the An-24 was adapted to perform many secondary missions such as ice reconnaissance and engine/propeller test-bed, as well as further development to produce the An-26 tactical transport, An-30 photo-mapping/survey aircraft and An-32 tactical transport with more powerful engines. Various projects were envisaged such as a four jet short/medium haul airliner and various iterations of powerplant.
The main production line was at the Kiev-Svyatoshino (now Aviant) aircraft production plant which built 985, with 180 built at Ulan Ude and a further 197 An-24T tactical transport/freighters at Irkutsk. Production in the USSR was shut down by 1978.
Production continues at China's Xi'an Aircraft Industrial Corporation which makes licensed, reverse-engineered and redesigned aircraft as the Xian [Yunshuji] Y7, and its derivatives. Manufacture of the Y7, in civil form, has now been supplanted by the MA60 derivative with western engines and avionics, to improve performance and economy, and widen the export appeal.

Planespotting in Ukraine Kyiv Boryspil Airport November 2019
After flying with Wizzair from Bratislava to Kyiv Zhuliany Airport our original plan was to spend half a day filming at Boryspil Airport and visiting the museum at Zhuliany.
Unfortunately, the Saturday evening flight we had booked with Ukraine International Airlines was cut only weeks before our trip to Ukraine. The airline offered us the option to fly on Sunday morning, or earlier on Saturday. This left us with only 12 hours in the country.
After a nice evening meal, and a good nights sleep we proceeded at the earliest time possible to get the train to the airport. Arriving just after 0720 in the morning we went straight through security and film as much from the terminal as possible.
I must admit it was so nice to see so many of the Ukrainian International fleet as they arrived and departed throughout the morning.
All in all, despite our trip being cut short due to UIAs changing of our flight, the trip was pleasant nonetheless.

THE SIGHT & THE SOUND 1-1/11 : Motor Sich AN-24 UR-47297 documentary from Kiev to Zaporizhia
FLIGHT #1, PART 1
MOTOR SICH AIRLINES AN-24 UR-47297 KIEV - ZAPORIZHIA
Being tempted by the idea to join the final scheduled flight of Belavia's legendary TU-154M on a rotation from Minsk to St. Petersburg and back, it just made sense to change my usual access to Belarus from a direct flight from Frankfurt to a Motor Sich Airlines flight from Zaporizhia, Ukraine. Especially, because a YAK-40 and an AN-140 have been planned for scenic flights out of Minsk, the possibility was likely to get a two hour YAK-40 and a two hour AN-140 ride in and out of Minsk for 150 EUR. Once in Zaporizhia, I could not resist the idea to explore once again the network of this very unusual and unique fine little airline, operating solely aircraft of Soviet and Ukrainian production, equipped with engines developed and manufactured by the Motor Sich Engine Plant.
So, it was off again to the Ukraine, in 2016. Things in the Ukraine have changed considerably from 2014. To the worse. The enthusiasm from the days of the Maidan has given way to letargic and pessimistic mood. Lots of red tape, increased suspicion against foreigners from whatever origin has sparked an increased awareness of security personnel on the ramp and elsewhere against those species with a camera in their hand. Spirits and minds are back to old Soviet reflections. It is hard to imagine this great country getting back on its feet soon.
Eleven (!) flights in total on board Soviet and Ukrainian metal were about to follow.
This flight on board AN-24 UR-47297 was the first flight, starting at Kiev's Zhuliany airport on the evening service to Motor Sich's base Zaporizhia. This flight was the only flight, on which I received a rather harsh treatment from the crew on board. It turned out, that this crew was not informed about my arrival, and hence, business as usual, no photos, no videos, shut up and remain seated ! The tone remained rude and firm until I felt obliged to mention the names of my generous hosts at Motor Sich Airlines, which helped changing attitude considerably into a somewhat apologetic and forgiving nature.
UR-47297 is a unique aircraft, with a different, a modern cabin layout similar to the Boeing 737, smaller windows, quite tough for videographers, especially on full flights and during night time.
History of Antonov AN-24RV UR-47297
Airframe 07306610 was manufactured 1971 at the Aviant Plant
and delivered April 15, 1971 to the Kiev Division of Aeroflot
registered CCCP-47297. After March 21, 1980, CCCP-47297 operated for the Ukrainian Division of Aeroflot. CCCP-47297 was newly registered UR-47297 in June 1993 and operated for Air Ukraine. UR-47297 operated for ARP 410 Airlines, the Airline of the Kiev Aircraft Repair Plant 410, from November, 2001 until July, 2009. After being stored for four years at Kiev-Zhuliany airport,
UR-47297 was sold to Motor Sich Airlines in June, 2013. UR-47297 operates on domestic routes from Zaporozhye and Kiev-Zhuliany airports.
