Lil Summary (book):
This trip began on the 13th of December and ended on the 20th of December. Majority of us flew into Nelson on the same plane where as others went on an earlier flight or took the ferry from Wellington. We stayed at 3 huts and camped out once. On the first day after the flight we drove in a van to Marahau. This was the beginning of the walk. From Marahau we walked to Apple Tree Bay to have lunch. After lunch we walked to Anchorage Hut which we stayed at. The second day was just a chill day and we went to the Cleopatras Pools and had a swim at Anchorage beach. The third day we headed out to Bark Bay Hut and stayed there for the night. On the forth day we headed out early to walk a short low tide track that saved us about 10 minutes and began out walk to Awaroa Hut. Along the way we noticed there was a cafe but we decided not to stop. The fifth day we got out our day packs and walked from the Hut, to separation Point, to Whariwharangi Bay Hut and back to Awaroa. The next morning we left early to check out the cafe. It was really nice but super expensive. From the cafe we walked back to Bark Bay Hut. We left Bark Bay just in time to catch the Low tide track from Torrent Bay to Anchorage. We had dinner at Anchorage Hut the headed to Apple Tree Bay for out lovely camp out. After a rough sleep, we walked back to Marahau to be taken back to the Airport. In total, we walked about 120km throughout the 8 days. I am thankful that I was offered to go on this trip with such an amazing group of friends and I hope we can plan something again in the near future xx

Nelson Travel Guide - New Zealand Charming Experience
Nelson Travel Guide - New Zealand Charming Experience
Nelson is the second oldest settled city in New Zealand and the oldest in the South Island. Nelson is situated in a region often known as Nelson Tasman or the Top of the South. It is actually slightly north of the capital city of Wellington. Together with Richmond, it has a population of around 50,000 ranking it as New Zealand’s tenth most populous city and is the geographical centre of the nation.
Nelson is a compact coastal city set amongst some of New Zealand's most stunning scenery. The city is the economic and cultural centre for the Nelson-Tasman region and offers an excellent range of shopping, eating and cultural experiences with an abundance of parks, rivers, beaches and nature trails to explore. Nelson is named after British admiral Viscount Nelson and many streets and features such as Trafalgar Park and Hardy, Collingwood and Nile Streets, are named after his naval battles and comrades.
Nelson is New Zealand's oldest city since, although it was proclaimed a Bishop's See and city under letters patent by Queen Victoria on 27 September 1858 and after Christchurch's city charter, Pakeha settlement had started in earnest in Nelson in 1841, 9 years before the good ship Charlotte-Jane arrived in Christchurch on 16 December 1850. Nelson is usually New Zealand's sunniest city with over 2,500 sunshine hours per year.
The Nelson region covers five distinct geographic areas:
The urban centres of Nelson & Richmond
The highways of Mapua, Motueka and upper and lower Moutere, through rolling horticultural land
The idyllic coastline of Abel Tasman National Park
The heart of the parks, Golden Bay between the huge Kahurangi and tiny Abel Tasman national parks
The alpine lakes and rivers around St Arnaud - Nelson Lakes & Murchison including Nelson Lakes and Kahurangi national parks
The Nelson economy is based on the ‘big four’ industries of seafood, horticulture, tourism and forestry. Port Nelson is the biggest fishing port in Australasia. There are also a range of growth industries, including art and craft, aviation, engineering technology, and information technology. The region's official tourism organisation is Nelson Tasman Tourism, which operates i-SITE Visitor Information Centres in Nelson City, Takaka in Golden Bay and in Murchison.
Nelson City is small enough to walk around, but for access from the surrounding suburbs and around the sites and attractions of the city and region you'll likely want to rent a car, take a taxi, or have a fresh set of legs and a bicycle. Nelson has a wide variety of excellent cafes and restaurants using fresh local produce. Nelson is the largest fishing port in Australasia, so the fresh seafood is always great. Nelson offers an excellent range of quality accommodation including Backpackers, Bed and Breakfasts (B&B's), Holiday Homes, Hotels, Lodges, Motels, Resorts and Serviced Apartments.

30 Tips for Backpacking in New Zealand ➜
-- About this video --
Today we have just a short activity but one definitely worth doing if you are passing through Motueka in the Nelson Tasman Region. We are doing the walk to the Riwaka Resurgence in the Kahurangi National Park.
Despite the rain, we venture into the Kahurangi National Park on the Riwaka Resurgence Walk. The walk is only about 15 minutes through dense native New Zealand forest alongside the rapids and waterfalls of the Riwaka River.
At the end of the Riwaka Resurgence walk we arrive at the resurgence of the Riwaka River – a river emerging from underneath a mountain. There are information panels to tell of the Maori significance of the area and what this place means to the local culture of New Zealand.
We race the rain back to the campervan where we head back to Marahau and hope for better weather for our activity tomorrow.
So what do you think of the Riwaka Resurgence? Is it a place you would do a pit stop at in the Kahurangi National Park?

To the north of Nelson lies Golden Bay and the Abel Tasman area. One of our most favourite places to camp! Check out the footage and you'll see why. Paradise-like sand and blue-as water, its crankin and it totally goes off over summer! Kaiteriteri is a beach just 10 minutes north of Motueka and has been a childhood camping destination for the both of us! Yea boi!

Abel Tasman holidayers devoted to Awaroa beach: RNZ Checkpoint
Wellingtonians Cathy and Stephen Franks have been devoted to Awaroa, where a public campaign to buy a beach has raised more than $2m, for 30 years.
Their holiday home is fashioned from an arrangement of train carriages with additions by the late Sir Ian Athfield, whose presence at Awaroa lives on through a distinctive building on the lagoon foreshore which he designed and lived in as his second home.
Tracy Neal reports.
New Zealand 2014 - Abel Tasman NP Coastal Track
The Abel Tasman Coast Track, located in Abel Tasman National Park on South Island’s northern shores. The Coast Track is a Great Walk and extends for 54.4 km. All streams are bridged but there are tidal crossings which can only be crossed within a few hours either side of low tide. The track takes an average of three to five days to complete and can be walked from either end.
