Motutapu Island, Auckland, New Zealand (Day 01)
Next day -
Exploring Motutapu Island
Taking the Explore Group ferry from CBD Auckland we spent the day tramping around Motutapu Islands. This magical island is only 30 minutes from Auckland central.
Motutapu Island is a 1,509 ha (3,730 acres) island in the Hauraki Gulf to the northeast of the city of Auckland, New Zealand. The island is part of the Hauraki Gulf Maritime Park.
We had a great time exploring the island. We got into Home Bay on the Explore morning service, then checked out the Reid Homestead. From there we walked the western Rotary Centennial Track (great views!) then at the Northern Junction took the track to the WWII Gun Emplacements, then on to Sandy Bay. Then walked back to northern junction and took the eastern Rotary Centennial Track back to Home Bay. Then took the afternoon Explore ferry back to Auckland. Was a awesome 5 hours on the island. You can also camp at Home Bay.

Motatapu Track - Otago, New Zealand
A 4 day tramp along the Motatapu Track which runs between Arrowtown and Lake Wanaka on the South Island of New Zealand. This trip over Christmas 2017 enjoyed pretty good and at times very hot weather. There is little respite from the sun with the majority of this track being out in the open. On the plus side that gives great views from high up on many kilometers of undulating ridges. The 3-4 day track includes 4 passes over 1200m each. I actually started in Arrowtown which added a few hours up to Macetown, the abandoned Gold Town. There is a lot of up and down generally and a lot of sideling to on this fairly tough track. Fortunately Santa visited on Christmas day and left a little something. With thanks to Mutt Lange for access.
Auckland Travel Guide - Amazing New Zealand experience
Auckland Travel Guide - Amazing New Zealand experience
Auckland is a modern cosmopolitan city with a population of 1.45 million people — roughly one third of New Zealand's entire population reside in Auckland. In the centre, the iconic Sky Tower has views of Viaduct Harbour, which is full of superyachts and lined with bars and cafes. Auckland Domain, the city’s oldest park, is based around an extinct volcano and home to the formal Wintergardens. Near Downtown, Mission Bay Beach has a seaside promenade.
The city and suburbs have developed within the same time frame and similar urban patterns as California (Los Angeles and Auckland have shared urban planning designs and are sister cities). Today the city and suburbs sprawl over a large urban area, hemmed to the east and west by two large harbours (Waitemata and Manukau) and ocean (Pacific Ocean and Tasman Sea) beyond.
Auckland is in a temperate climate zone and does not experience hot or cold extremes at any time of year. The summer months are December to March. The sun is very strong during this time and it is advisable to use sunscreen and cover skin from prolonged exposure. April to June brings cooler temperatures and rain toward the end of June which persists through winter until September and October.
If you want to explore Auckland's more distant suburbs, it's possible to take a service from the CBD to a hub where information and further connections are available. Hubs are located in larger suburban centres - retail malls, entertainment facilities and (depending on destination) beaches are never far away. The bigger hubs are (buses only unless otherwise indicated):
Albany
Orewa/Hibiscus Coast
Botany
Sylvia Park (buses and trains)
Henderson (buses and trains)
Otahuhu
Onehunga (train station nearby)
Manukau (buses and trains)
Newmarket (buses and trains)
New Lynn (buses and trains)
