A Walk Around Rue Mouffetard & Place de la Contrescarpe, Paris
Place de la Contrescarpe is a road located in the 5th arrondissement of Paris.
The Place de la Contrescarpe is located on Rue Mouffetard, at the outlet of Lacépède and Cardinal-Lemoine streets; it is a focal point of the 5th arrondissement, as it is at the centre of the four administrative districts that are Saint-Victor, Jardin-des-Plantes, Val-de-Grâce and Sorbonne.
The square is about forty yards in diameter and has in its centre a median occupied in part by a public fountain.
Now a tourist destination, it has many cafes, most of them recent. Some facades, however, retain the memory of an earlier period.
The old café shop Au Nègre Joyeux was located on the west side of the square — only the sign remains, which is destined to disappear.
It owes its name to the vicinity of the old Rue de la Contrescarpe-Saint-Marcel, currently divided between Blainville Street and Cardinal Lemoine Street, and refers to the counterscarp, the outer slope of the ditch in front of Philippe Auguste's compound.
Opened in 1852, it was formed by the removal of an island of dwellings between the streets of Cardinal-Lemoine, Lacepède and Mouffetard. This islet would be located today, adjacent to the café Les Arts, that is to say at the level of the eastern part of the square.
La Rue Mouffetard, village feel within Paris. Eat, drink, shop, repeat.
Reminiscent of the Middle Ages, Rue Mouffetard which provided inspiration to Victor Hugo while he wrote Les Misérables is a charming market street. Rue Mouffetard or La Mouffe, as locals call it, is one of the oldest streets in Paris. The Romans opened it some 2000 years ago. It was a section of the south road that connected Lutetia to Italy. Today it is an ancient chapter of Paris history for the 21st century to marvel and we have to thank Baron Haussmann for keeping the remnant of an old Roman road intact, not including it in the renovation of Paris in the mid 19th century. Rue Mouffetard is full of specialty food shops, all offering top quality products. You can do all of your shopping here. Bread and pastries from the bakers, meat and charcuterie from the butchers, cheese from the fromagerie, fresh fruit and vegetables, chocolate, etc. The street is closed to traffic, adding to the overall pleasure of strolling and stopping at one of its many cafés. You will see countless shops and restaurants as you you walk downhill. When you are at end of the street with the fruit market with a beautiful display of unbelievably delicious looking fresh produce 6:45, hopefully it is lunchtime. La Bourgogne is right across the street...a great authentic Parisian restaurant for a nice Parisian lunch. Enjoy!

A Walk Down Rue Saint-Denis, Paris
Rue Saint-Denis is one of the oldest streets in Paris. Its route was first laid out in the 1st century by the Romans, and then extended to the north in the Middle Ages. From the Middle Ages to the present day, the street has been notorious as a place of prostitution. Its name derives from it being the historic route to Saint-Denis.
The street extends as far as the 1st arrondissement and Rue de Rivoli to the south and as far as the 2nd arrondissement and the boulevard Saint-Denis to the north. It runs parallel to the boulevard de Sébastopol.
The ancient Roman route (Flanders road) leading to Saint-Denis, Pontoise and Rouen it competed with the route de Senlis, but gained an advantage over it with the demolition of the Grand Pont and the development of the royal abbey of Saint-Denis, becoming the triumphal way for royal entries into the capital.
Flanked by houses from 1134 onwards, the street has borne the alternative names of Sellerie de Paris and Sellerie de la Grande Rue (13th century) ; grand'rue de Paris ; grande rue or rue des Saints Innocents et grant chaussée de Monsieur / Monseigneur Saint-Denis (14th century). During the French Revolution, it was known as the rue de Franciade.
The street was one of the centres of the June Rebellion of 1832, immortalised in Victor Hugo's novel Les Misérables, and which is referred to in the book as the Epic of the Rue Saint-Denis

Paris, France - Video Tour of Le Marais Neighborhood (Part 2)
Today we are going to finish up our tour of a great Paris neighborhood -- the Marais. This is the second of our two-part series on the fantastic neighborhood of the Marais in Paris. If you haven't yet watched the first part, you can find it on our YouTube channel :
The Marais used to be an important center of Jewish Paris and is still today to a certain degree. You can see the unique Agoudas Hakehilos synagogue designed by Hector Guimard at 10 rue Pavee, which used to be the one of the main Jewish streets in Paris. You can pick up some tasty pastries at the various Jewish bakeries or grab a falafel at the famous l'As du Falafel (34 rue des Rosiers)!
Further down the street is Chez Marianne, a better option for a sit down meal. Patrons can make their own tasting menu of Eastern Mediterranean delicacies such as hummus, grilled eggplant and vine-leaf dolmas.
The fact that the Marais has become a trendy area with cool boutiques does have something to do with the rise in its gay population. At night, you'll have trouble finding space at two of its most popular bars -- the Open Café at 17 rue des Archives and the Raidd Bar at 23 rue de Temple.
If you'd like to experience the Marais like a true local, you should definitely rent a vacation rental or furnished apartment. There's no better way to experience this city than to live in a real Parisian apartment.
Check out this fully furnished 2-bedroom apartment located in Marais( ), it would be great for your stay in Paris. This accommodation offers a fully equipped kitchen including a dishwasher, a washing machine in the apartment, wood floors throughout and a flat screen TV with a DVD player.
Or take a look at this furnished studio Paris apartment ( ). The apartment is furnished with a double bed and a sitting chair and would be a great home for anyone on their Paris adventure!
If it's shopping you're after, this is the place to be -- from antiques to vintage dresses to the coolest designer shoes! Check out the streets around the Haut Marais/Upper Marais to see what's really going on.
If you are staying in an apartment in the Marais you can pick up some delicious French specialties. In the Upper Marais check out the international samplings at the Marché des Enfants Rouges, the oldest Market in Paris.
Tartes Kluger, an inventive savory and sweet tart restaurant is perfect for a light, but tasty lunch on the go.
If you're looking for delicious French, head to L'Ambassade d'Auvergne, where you'll sample excellent food from the volcanic Auvergne region
For vegetarians staying in the Marais you'll find creative dishes, salads, quiches, and other surprises at this tasty spot.
The Marais is also bustling in the evenings. The lower half of rue Vielle de Temple has several lively cafes and bars including:
Le Pick-Clops (16 rue Vielle de Temple) -- a great place for apero with their free popcorn, they also have some nice light meal options.
The Lizard Lounge (18 rue du Bourg Tibourg) -- head down into the basement to hang with a fun international crowd. Happy hour until 10 pm and fun dance tunes until late
There is plenty else to see and do here. If you can think of any of your favorite Marais secrets, please share them with us in the comments box below.
Be sure to visit our web-site ( ) and to book a vacation rental ( ) or furnished apartment ( ) with New York Habitat. You'll find furnished apartments all over Paris!

Paris, France - Video tour of a vacation rental in Saint-Germain-des-Pres (rue de Sevres)
Hello and welcome to another video tour of a vacation rental in Paris by New York Habitat ( ). Today, we will be showing you a nice studio apartment located on rue de Sevres, in Saint-Germain-des-Pres, Paris.
Do not hesitate to watch other great video tours by New York Habitat, such as these videos of the Ile Saint-Louis ( ) and the Buttes Chaumont ( ).
To learn more about this vacation rental (ref. PA-1399), feel free to take a look at its description on our website ( ).
This vacation rental is located on the 7th floor (8th floor in the US) of an 18th century building with an elevator.
Upon entering the apartment, you will find yourself in the kitchen and dining area. The American-style kitchen is equipped with a small fridge, two electric burners, a sink, a microwave, a coffee maker, a toaster, and a small dining table with chairs.
The living area features a decorative marble fireplace an entire wall made up of windows, offering a spectacular view of the Parisian skyline and the golden dome of Les Invalides, as well as a partial view of the Eiffel Tower. The bed is found on the left corner of the living room and faces the windows.
The small bathroom features a bathtub, a sink, a mirror, and a small window. There is a separate toilet, as well as a closet in towards the entrance of the studio apartment.
As we mentioned it above, this vacation rental is located in the chic neighborhood of Saint-Germain-des-Pres, in the heart of Paris.
On rue Vaneau, you will find the amazing impasse des Artisans. Behind its large door, you will discover a sort of secret garden.
At 24 rue de Sevres, you will find Le Bon Marche. Opened in 1838, Le Bon Marche was the first ever department store to open in France. You will find many name brands there, as well as La Grande Epicerie of Paris, where you can buy fine delicatessens.
Right across the street from Le Bon Marche, you will find the Chapelle Epiphanie du Seminaire des Missions Etrangeres, whose interior is a must see.
Eventually, you can not miss the Eglise Saint-Germain-des-Pres, which was built in 558. It is surrounded by many well-known cafes, bars and restaurants, and you can even get a glimpse of the Tour Montparnasse from there, which is one of the largest skyscrapers in Paris.
Remember that New York Habitat offers hundreds of great apartments for rent all over Paris ( ), including vacation rentals ( ) and furnished apartments ( ).
Do not forget to check out our blog, where you can find plenty of information about the City of Light, such as in this article about the Museum Night in Paris ( ).
