New Zealand: Wanaka and Mount Aspiring National Park
Absolutely breathtaking region of New Zealand: Wanaka area and Mount Aspiring National Park. The first hike is a endless switchback, steep climb to Isthmus Peak. The views, however, make the trek 100% worth it. This hike is similar to the VERY popular Rob Roy's Peak however with MUCH smaller crowds; recommended from a local at the Ground Up brewery (a MUST try in Wanaka... :-)). At the top we discovered a 360 view of peaks and lakes. Not many know about this Rob Roy's Peak equivalent so if views minus crowds is the goal, definitely explore this trail! The second hike is up Motueka Valley to Rob Roy's Glacier. To be completely frank, the valley was more inspiring than the glacier itself. Lush green backdrop to freshly snow-capped mountains? Yes please! Also, when visiting Wanaka, don't forget to try Rhyme and Reason Brewery!!! (this and Ground Up were our favorites of the area) .....missing NZ already.... Thanks for watching!!!!

Mt. Aspiring National Park, Wanaka, New Zealand, Road Trip, EP 01 | පාර දිගේ නවසීලන්ත සංචාරය
Key Words : New Zealand, Road Trip, Mt. Aspiring National Park, Rob Roy Glacier, Aspiring Hut. Wanaka, Places to visit in New Zealand, Wanaka Tree
Last October we went on a road trip in New Zealand South Island.
- Why south island ?
if you only have two weeks or shorter time, definitely go for South Island. It offers really good mix of nature, adventure, culture and many more.
- My favorite places in South Island
* Mount Cook
* Milford Sound
* Mt Aspiring National Park, Wanaka
* Lake Pukaki
* Queens town etc.
- Flying there
Our journey started from Singapore and we found Singapore airline to be the cheapest. Singapore to Wellinton via Melbourne is the cheapest. Close to 750$. Remember to book little bit early like two months. Wellington to Christchurch flight ticket can be bought under 100 SGD. It is just under one hour flight and It is the most convenient compared to using a ferry from wellington(north island) to picton (south island).
- Mt. Aspiring National Park
If you are a travel addict, i am sure you have heard about Wanaka Tree in New Zealand. One of the most photographed trees in the world. But not many people heard of Mt. Aspiring National Park and Hut. From Wanak you can hire a vehicle, preferably a one with high clearance (SUV) as you need to cross many streams along the way which some of them can be fairly deep depending on the season. It is a 50km drive from Wanaka town to Raspberry Flat Car park which is the starting point of many hikes. You can visit several waterfalls and glaciers along the way to Rob Roy Glacier and Aspiring Hut. It is definitely the best hike in this area and possible one of the bests in New Zealand.

Twin Falls, Mt Aspiring National Park, near Wanaka, New Zealand
A long gravel road drive between Wanaka and Mt Aspiring through farmlands and past mountains including Triple Cone and ever steeper slopes, sometimes with deer and sheep on the sky line and alongside the Wilkin River, one passes the Twin Falls .... hang gliders abounded the day I went, adding to the glamour of the immensely high falls, traceable almost to the top by the naked eye

Mount Aspiring National Park - Cascade Saddle Route
Our 3-day trip, started from Mt Aspiring National Park - Cascade Saddle Route
On the way up we had amazing views of the Matukituki valley, Mt Aspiring and later on, the stunning Dart Glacier. We also had the great luck to see New Zealand’s famous mountain parrot Kea in its natural habitat. Descending into a beautiful small valley with crystal clear waterfalls we soon reached the Cascade Saddle (1524 m) itself. Here we could again enjoy excellent views on Dart Glacier which is much more impressive to watch than the very popular and much easier accessible Franz-Josef and Fox Glaciers. After having lunch at this unique place we went further on to the terminal face of the glacier and followed the valley to the Dart Hut where we spent the night.

New Zealand Adventure - Canyoneering in Mount Aspiring National Park
What is a New Zealand adventure without some canyoneering?
**Read more about my New Zealand itinerary here**
Canyoneering is one of my favorite adventure sports. I'm terrified of heights, but for some reason, canyoneering doesn't scare me - I actually love it!
When I was researching what kind of New Zealand adventure I wanted to sign up for, I came across South Canyons canyoneering in Mount Aspiring National Park and I was sold. My friends and I signed up for the full day canyoneering adventure through Robinson Creek, and it was one of my favorite days of our New Zealand adventure.
We met Alain, our guide, in a small parking lot on the side of the road near Haast Pass - since we were coming from Fox Glacier towards Wanaka, it was more convenient than meeting at the office and driving back. Alain geared us up in wetsuits, helmets, and boots - in March, the water was quite...well...freezing.
We set off uphill on a short hike, which was a bit difficult in the wetsuits, but manageable, until we reached the start of the canyons. From there, we rappelled down a ton of beautiful waterfalls, waded through water and over logs and rocks, did some cliff jumping, and overall, just had a badass day.
Here are the highlights of my fun New Zealand adventure canyoneering in Mount Aspiring National Park!

Brewster Hut - New Zealand Mount Aspiring National Park 2016
Blue Pools at Mount Aspiring National Park!
We drove out to Wanaka this morning from Queenstown and checked out the lake and the infamous Wanaka tree in the morning! We were going to do some longer hiking, but after looking at the map, we decided to head out to Mount Aspiring National Park to see what that park had!
We first stopped at the Blue Pools that was a short hike with 2 suspension bridges and super crystal blue water! We even added to a peace rock there!
After that, we spent the rest of the day checking out three waterfalls that were located along the main road in Mount Aspiring! With the days being so short this time of year, we then headed back to Wanaka for the night where I finished my day off with some night photography in a full moon!
Hope you enjoy and thank YOU for watching!
