VLOG #18 - Benbow Volcano Hike on Ambrym Island, Vanuatu (Part 2)
On Ambrym Island I hiked one of the only volcanoes in the world where you can see red lava: BENBOW volcano. In my second part of my travel vlogs about Vanuatu, you will see how to hike up the 1300m high volcano. There are agencies who organise tours to hike from the east point (see map in video) but I hiked with locals which are my friends. After a 5 h hike from port vatu (south side village, nearest airport: craig cove, ambrym) where we got by boat from Epi in 3 h, we stayed overnight in a free camp near the crater. From there it is another 2 h hike to the first crater which you have to hike down (quite dangerous, only accessible with clear weather). In the second crater you can see the red lava from the active volcano.
You can also hike the volcano up and down in one day but you have to be very trained. Take enough drinking water, no supplies up there. It can get down to 5 degrees in the night. The other volcano where you can see the dust coming up is MARUM volcano. The zone was closed due to dangerous activities in Mai 2017.
Afterwards I took the plane from Craig Cove to Port Vila, capital of Vanuatu and did a tour on Efate island before flying back to Sydney.

Mount MARUM volcano and its boiling lava lake in May 2018 (Ambrym Island in Vanuatu).
One of the world’s most active volcanoes, Mount Marum is located in the middle of the Ambrym island with a 12km caldera. This majestic volcano lights up the night sky with its bubbling lava lake. Only very few volcanoes in the world have persistent lava lakes.

We did the overnight cross-over trek (West to North) which takes you to the Mt Benbow and the Mt Marum craters. The Mt Marum lookout is on the absolute vertical of the lava lake, perfectly on the line of the boiling cauldron of lava where you can marvel at the bowels of the Earth – the Inferno !
Unfortunately, both lava lakes on Ambrym (Mt Benbow and Mt Marum) disappeared in December 2018. This is probably one of the last videos of the boiling lava lake at Mt Marum!

Ambrym's famed lava lakes destroyed
Some time in mid December a fissure eruption on the flank of Marum started a series of event that led to the destruction of the 3 lava lakes on Ambrym, Marum, Benbow, and Son of Benbow.
We hope they soon return .

One of many active volcano in Vanuatu, this is Mt Marum. Not so fit myself took me 5 hours up from Ramvetlam village. Weather was fine until when we got up to the crater, then started very windy, I was so friten to stand up, so my guide Garae hold one of my leg when I reached my camera towards the Lava. Then started rain.... only 15 minutes spent on the top. I must be the shortest person to spent on the top of the volcano after 5 hours of hard trek up, and 5 hours down in one day... never mind, I will do it again, next time better preparation. Spend one night next time
