The hardest climb of my life! [Chimborazo - Ecuador - Episode 5]
Chimborazo is the highest point on the planet when measured from the centre of the Earth and climbing it was the hardest thing I have ever done (so far) in my life!
After checking a lot online I decided to rely on Andean Adventures to take me to the top of Chimborazo. They run the Carrel and Whymper Refuges and they have plenty of experience. My guide Fabián was very professional and pushed me to achieve my goal while trying his best to keep both of us safe - Check out my story to see how it went!

Mount Chimborazo Summit Climb - May 17/18 2019
The summit of Chimborazo is the furthest piece of land from the Earth’s core and the closest to the sun, 2 kilometers closer to the sun that the summit of Mt. Everest. This makes the summit of Chimborazo the highest point on planet Earth. In December I made an attempt to reach the summit and were pushed back due to a high risk of avalanches just over 19,000 ft. It was absolutely crushing to have to turn, but we had no choice but to respect the mountain that night.
In May 2019 I went back to give it another try which resulted in a successful summit and this video.

Mt. Chimborazo Video 1 - Background and Altitude Sickness
We will be climbing Mt. Chimborazo in December 2018. This video provides some background information and describes some of the altitude challenges we will face. Future videos will include training methods and a mini documentary of the climb itself.

Mountain Biking Chimborazo: Ecuador's Tallest Mountain!
Mountain biking down Volcán Chimborazo was such a crazy thrill! Chimborazo is the highest mountain in Ecuador and the furthest point in the world from the center of the earth due to the equatorial bulge. This makes Chimborazo the closest place to outer space on earth and the Andean mountain surroundings are pretty otherworldly!
Yet what makes for such an awesome adventure here is mountain biking Chimborazo! We did this Chimborazo mountain biking tour with ProBici in Riobamba Ecuador. Their route is nearly all downhill and mostly singletrack for a total of 40 white-knuckle kilometers of mountain biking down Chimborazo.

Chimborazo Sea to Summit Challenge: The Climb
The Chimborazo Sea to Summit Challenge involved cycling from Guayaquil on the coast of Ecuador, cycling and trekking a full circuit of Chimborazo, Ecuador's highest mountain, then climbing to its 6,310m summit.
We believe this feat has never been done before, but if you know someone who has, then please leave a message in the comments.
This short video covers the second part of the challenge - a trek round the mountain's east, north and west sides, an ascent of 5,020m Carihuairazo, and the culmination of the challenge - the ascent of Chimborazo itself.
A short sequence at the end covers the post-expedition relaxation in Baños and the Amazon rainforest.

The ice merchant of Chimborazo | DW Documentary
Baltazar Ushca is one of the last ice merchants in Ecuador. The traditional occupation is dying out. The Chimborazo is a majestic mountain reaching 6,300 meters high. Its ice-covered top towers above the plateau of the Ecuadorean Andes. Every week Balthazar Ushca hikes for several hours up its slopes to harvest glacial ice, which he then sells at the market in the nearby city of Riobamba. Buyers use it for cooling and ice cream. Being an ice merchant or “hielero” is a recognized and respected profession in Ecuador. In recent years, however, the tradition has been under increasing threat from modern refrigeration technology.

a journey to the farthest point from the Earth's center, few days before the Cotopaxi eruption.
On the foothills of Mount Chimborazo
Mount Chimborazo (6263 m) is the highest mountain of Ecuador. The steppe plains around the colossal volcanic cone are cold and windy, but full of natural beauty. We bought a horse and spent a wonderful time in this area hiking through lonely grassland high above the clouds.

In June 2018, four climbing friends and I formed the “Ecuador 2018 Expedition” for a second Quest to Touch the Sun. On Thursday, June 14, our expedition broke into 3 groups for our final big climbs. Big Nick and Jay the Machine headed to Antisana, Capitol Hiker departed for Cotopaxi, and The Tank and I traveled with our guide Estalin to Chimborazo. Each group would climb to a high camp or refuge to before an early alpine start to altitudes well above 18,000 feet. Join us on our last adventure as The Tank and I take on the mother of Ecuadoran volcanos – Chimborazo. Enjoy!
