Mount Cook Walking Trail
Mount Cook in Cooktown, far North Queensland was a nice challenge to walk up. It is about 431 meter above sea level, so no mountain, but a challenging hill to climb to the top.
Starting from the Hannan Drive Carpark on the North side of Mount Cook, you follow the path up the ridge, through the bush until you reach the summit. The trail is split into 3 sections, the first being easiest section, with well defined path and newly cut step, up to the first lookout. The second and final section becomes hard to follow and after the second lookout the path looks more like a goat track, cutting through the bush. But if you follow the yellow arrows, it quite easy to find your way to the top.
Once you reach the top you see a mast and helipad, however if you cross the pad and continue following the track you find the final lookout, looking over the ocean. Just a beautiful place to finish.
The route is about 6km in length and is recommend to take 3-4 hours. Its also categorised a strenuous route, however it only took us two and half hours and I done worse routes with lower rating. But I would guess in the summer Sun up in the tropics of North Queensland it would be much harder.

Cultural history of Black Mountain National Park:
The National Park's Black Mountains are a heavily significant feature of the Kuku Nyungkal people's cultural landscape known locally to Aboriginal Australians as Kalkajaka (trans: place of spear).
Queensland's Department of Environment and Natural Resources has been advised of at least four sites of particular mythological significance within the Black Mountains as follows:[5]
There are at least four sites of religious or mythological significance on the mountain. These are the Kambi, a large rock with a cave where flying-foxes are found; Julbanu, a big grey kangaroo-shaped rock looking toward Cooktown; Birmba, a stone facing toward Helenvale where sulphur-crested cockatoos are seen; and a taboo place called Yirrmbal near the foot of the range.
The Black Mountain also features strongly in local, more non-Aboriginal cultural landscapes, some of which has also been described by Queensland's Department of Environment and Resource Management as follows:[5]
When European colonists arrived late last century, they added to the many Aboriginal legends of the area with a few of their own. Stories abound of people, horses and whole mobs of cattle disappearing into the labyrinth of rocks, never to be seen again
It is believed that those who vanished most probably fell into one of the chasms under the rocks or after entering one of these places became lost. It is estimated only three in ten would survive such falls, wandering below the Earth's surface with only ground water streams and insects to nourish them. This minority group are referred to by tourists as Outback Moles (perhaps in reference to New York's underground population)
The national park's distinctive hard granite boulders and range originally formed out of magma that first slowly solidified under the Earth's crust about 250 million years ago

Cooktown is a town and locality in the Shire of Cook, Queensland, Australia. Cooktown is located about 2,000 kilometres north of Brisbane and 328 kilometres north of Cairns, by road. Cooktown is about 857 kilometres south of Cape York by road. At the time of the 2016 census, Cooktown had a population of 2,631.
Cooktown, on the eastern coast of Cape York Peninsula, is 1600 km north of Brisbane and 650 km from Torres Strait. Cooktown grew rapidly as the nearest port for the Palmer River gold rush in the 1870s. By the 1880s, its population peak, one-fifth of its residents were Chinese. The town declined rapidly in the first two decades of the twentieth century and by the 1950s it was almost a ghost town. Tourism gradually came to its rescue. Hiking the Mount Cook is about my lovely hike up the Mount Cook. The hike itself took about 2 hours and if you ever get to Cooktown, you should definitely do this hike. A beautiful Rainforest with lot's of rockformations, very strange looking plants, and wild animals all around. I saw some wild bush turkeys and a green snake as well, but was a bit too slow to actually film it.

Cooktown is a small town and locality in the Shire of Cook, Queensland, Australia. Cooktown is located about 2,000 kilometres (1,200 mi) north of Brisbane and 328 kilometres (204 mi) north of Cairns, by road. At the time of the 2011 census, Cooktown had a population of 2,339.
Cooktown is at the mouth of the Endeavour River, on Cape York Peninsula in Far North Queensland where James Cook beached his ship, the Endeavour, for repairs in 1770. Both the town and Mount Cook (431 metres or 1,415 feet) which rises up behind the town were named after James Cook.
Cooktown is one of the few large towns in the Cape York Peninsula and was founded on 25 October 1873 as a supply port for the goldfields along the Palmer River. It was called 'Cook's Town' until 1 June 1874.
