Mount Douglas Park, Victoria, BC, Canada
~~Local First Nations have used the area in and around Mount Douglas Park for thousands of years.
The mountain was originally known as Hill of Cedars. Fort Victoria, built in 1843, had its cedar pickets milled using wood from the park.
Governor James Douglas established this park in 1858 as a Government Reserve.
Government work projects initiated in the Depression years led to the construction of Churchill Road. It also had a teahouse, washroom and crew huts.
The City of Victoria took over the land on September 30, 1889 from the Province it became Mount Douglas Park. In 1992, Saanich began looking after managing the park. Over the years it has grown from 1.5 km2 (150 ha) to 1.83 km2 (183 ha) and the park will continue to be managed as a natural area.
The Mount Douglas Park Charter, approved by Council in 1992, assists in guiding the management of the park:
“The lands known as Mount Douglas Park are hereby reserved in perpetuity for the protection and preservation of the natural environment for the inspiration, use and enjoyment of the public.
This land has been transferred by the Province of British Columbia to the Corporation of the District of Saanich on the condition that it be maintained and preserved as a public park.
With this charter, the spirit and intent of the original crown grant of 1889 is maintained while its scope is expanded to include within Mount Douglas Park all adjacent municipal parklands, present and future, so the whole will continue as a wilderness preserve for generations to come.
Proclaimed this 22nd day of November, 1992, by the Council of the Corporation of the District of Saanich on behalf of the citizens of Saanich.”~~

Located just minutes from Downtown Victoria. There's many trails to choose from. I just show the most difficult trails in this park in this video!
At 1.88km2 (188 hectares), the park contains the largest urban forest on the Saanich Peninsula. You can explore this forest on more than 21 kms of trails.

5.2 km hike up to the summit of Mount Douglas. From the Churchill Dr trailhead I looped around via Norn and Whittaker, then the summit trail. Took Glendenning down from the summit then returned to the parking lot via Maddock and Norn.
Summit elevation: 225 meters (738 ft)

Mount Douglas Park - Victoria BC
A typical winter day at Mt. Douglas Park located in Saanich near Gordon Head. The weather was brisk but beautiful. Take the 39 or 28 buses to visit this beauty right here in the city. There are endless side trails to explore, and a variety of ecosystems - Redcedar dominated forest, Coastal Douglas Fir, and even some precious and threatened Garry Oak Meadows.
Featured in this video are all three - the redcedar appears at the beginning, followed by an Arbutus- and Garry Oak hillside with Douglas-fir visible in several shots. In the summer the park transforms into a world of green.

Crows Near Mt. Douglas Park, Saanich, British Columbia
Thousands of crows roost overnight in nearby Mt. Douglas Park. In the morning twilight they leave the trees and fly off in ragged groups. Their calls, the twisting lines they form against the grey-blue sky, the quiet when they've passed.
A lot of crows roost overnight in or near Mt. Douglas Park in Saanich, British Columbia (on Vancouver Island, near Victoria). Thousands of them. They leave their communal roost in the morning before sunrise and spread out over the surrounding area where, presumably, they forage and do what crows do. The crows leave the roost in waves or flights of a few hundred birds (or fewer). Some of them seem to pause along the way. What are they waiting for? They sometimes fly by mostly silently but usually some or many of them are cawing noisily. A few make a different call, more like that of a raven but I believe that those are individuals who have perched on trees or structures.
In the late afternoon they make their way back to the roost site in long draggled lines. That's what I attempt to show at the end of this video.
I'm still learning about making videos and using my camera equipment so forgive the many obvious flaws in this video. Let me know if you have seen similar crow behaviour on Vancouver Island or anywhere else in the world.

Saanich Police responded to the Mount Douglas Food Market in the AM for a report that a bunch of youth were attempting to gain access to the property.
They were found shortly upon arrival.

Hey wieners old and new I got back to hiking and went to one with spectacular views of Victoria BC. Mount Douglas which is actually in Saanich which is pretty much Victoria I dont really know. Anyways I did a hike and here it is. I even learned you a little history.

Killer whales near Victoria, BC on Saanich Inlet
Four members of the transient killer whale family T99 vs seal. This occurred while we were sitting enjoying the view, hoping to see where the orca family was heading. A seal appeared at the front of the boat and then boom - this happened. They didn't appear to be in any rush to kill the seal and thankfully we didn’t experience any gore. The whole event took place over 4 minutes. During the three hours we watched this family, they caught at least six seals. With Ocean Ecoventures out of Cowichan Bay. Filmed on the Salish Sea, in the middle of Saanich Inlet (North Saanich in the background and Bamberton behind), on August 26, 2018.
