Mt. Elgon region, Bungoma county reaping high produce despite dry spells elsewhere

Not so long ago, different parts of the country were drenched in a dry spell which left most crops planted during the October-December rain season wither with livestock farmers struggling to find pasture for their animals.

Some farmers were forced to sell their animals at throw away prices or lost them to drought.

Despite all the challenges, Mt. Elgon region in Bungoma county has continued to reap high agricultural produce which has become the key support for the western people.

To get to the park, a tarmac road runs through Jinja to Mbale town at the western base of Mount Elgon, before climbing to Kapchorwa on the mountain's north-western flank. Murram roads lead off the Mbale-Kapchorwa road to reach the various trailheads of the park.

Bungoma residents want Mt. Elgon constituency moved to Trans Nzoia

A section of Mt elgon residents in Bungoma county have prepared a petition for alteration of Bungoma and Transnzoia county boundaries to transfer Mt Elgon constituency to Trans nzoia.

Tension is high in mount Elgon, Bungoma county after four people were killed by a gang Wednesday night in Kipiyieto village. KTN's Aaron Ochieng' reports.

On Campaign Trail on Mount Elgon

My campaigns first set off with Mount Elgon constituency. It is the largest of the nine constituencies that constitute Bungoma County, occupied mostly by the Sabaot community, with a voting population of 71,000 voters. The constituency has been largely neglected, with its vast resource base being mostly untouched. Besides being the most fertile constituency in the region, poor infrastructure has made it difficult for the inhabitants to sell their farm produce, making them among the poorest people in Kenya, besides all the riches they stand on. The national park there with breathtaking beauty and the famed black elephants and caves are not exploited for the benefit of the people. It is a wasted place!
When I become governor, I will open up Mount Elgon with good roads and a plan to develop the park for more tourism. I will develop horticulture (which is there but not well organized and supported by the county and national governments) with more agricultural research and extension services.
Most importantly, I will exploit the water resource on the mountain to help locals get piped water and pump the rest to the entire county for irrigation and domestic use. There's enough water to keep Bungoma county evergreen all year round. I will engage the youth in digging drenches for pipes and thereby provide employment. The two huge water reservoir tanks will be in Kapsokwony and Cheptais. All the springs and wells In Bungoma are contaminated by the growing populations and many toilets that sip contents into our natural water sources. Rivers flowing down from the mountain are contaminated upstream by the large populations of people who wash in and make the water unsafe for those on the lower side. This explains the high rates of typhoid prevalence in the county. Never again will any inhabitant of Bungoma go to the river or make long ques at water selling points for water when I become Governor. I will develop Mount Elgon to provide food and water for the county and a surplus for sell in other counties.

The Chamwada Report: Saving Mount Elgon

The 039 Elgon 4x4 challenge is a 4WD competition that takes place at the Chepkitale region of Mt. Elgon, Bungoma County each year.
Just like the famous Rhino Charge that is held annually at the Aberdares, the Elgon 4x4 Challenge is a motor sport event that entails individuals with 4 wheel drive vehicles coming down to Mt. Elgon and taking part in a string of challenges over a three day period.

Mt. Elgon national park boundary demarcation worries the Benet people

The Benet Community in the eastern district of Kween are protesting a new move by the ministry of Lands to open boundaries for Mt Elgon National Park. The Indigenous group is suspicious that the exercise is meant to evict them from land the Uganda WildLife Authority has previously claimed is part of the National Park. However the ministry of the Lands Spokesperson Denis Obbo says the exercise is meant to gather information that will help the Government and parliament reach a decision on how to implement a Consent judgement reached in 2005.
