Mount French is a mountain in South East Queensland, Australia. The mountain rises 579 m above sea level and is part of the Moogerah Peaks National Park. It lies approximately 100 km west of Brisbane in the locality of Mount French west of the town of Boonah in the Scenic Rim Region. Other prominent peaks in the Scenic Rim group of mountains include Mount Edwards, Mount Moon and Mount Greville. The traditional owners of the mountain, the Ugarapul people, named the two peaks Punchagin and Mee-bor-rum . In 1827, Patrick Logan named the peak Mount Dumaresq. The name was changed after Allan Cunningham named another mountain with the same name, coincidentally on the same day. It is best known as a popular destination for rockclimbers and is the home of Frog Buttress. It was first developed by Rick White and company during the late 1960s and 1970s. There are also some easy walks around the top of the cliffs from the picnic area. One track leads to the constructed lookout called Logans Lookout which overlooks the Fassifern Valley.Access to the mountain top is via sealed road. There are numerous self-registration camping sites, barbecues places, picnic tables, a single block of toilets, a car park and tap water is provided.

Mount May, Mount Barney National Park

On a beautiful Sunday in April a group of walkers from Brisbane Bushwalkers went for a walk up Mount May in the amazing Mount Barney National Park, west of Boonah in South-East Queensland. Mount May is one of the smaller mountains in the area, with two distinct peaks. The tallest of the peaks tops out at about 800 metres.

We followed a trail the whole way, heading from the cars straight up the side of a ridge and then up some scree to a saddle where we had morning tea, before a short ascent to the first peak with great views to the North over Lake Maroon and the Main Range.

We continued on to the second peak, descending into another saddle where a small bush campsite is located, then scrambling up again, negotiating some more scree, grass trees and rocky areas with lots of handholds to the top of the second peak, where we had lunch.

To get back down we descended off the other side of the peak through some shrubbery, following a less distinct trail, before hooking around and heading back up to our morning tea saddle and from there back down the way we had come.

Mount May is definitely worth a day out - the relatively easy climbing is fun and the views are pretty spectacular.

We drive out from Brisbane on a perfect Autumn day. Travelling along the Cunningham Highway the views of the stunning main range national park to our right and Moogerah Peaks National Park straight ahed are breathtaking.
Moogerah Peaks National Park and all its peaks surround the Moogerah Lake and districts. Its well worth the climbs ahead to get an almost aerial view of the picturesque surrounds.
