On Mount Gabriel looking over Schull bay at the start. That's were we stayed. You can see so much from up there. Those big white things are radar domes . The mountain is full of archaeology, old copper mines going back to the Bronze age. The yellow castle in the distance belongs to Jeremy Irons. We were lucky that we had such a glorious day.

Mount Gabriel (Irish: Cnoc Osta) is a mountain on the Mizen Peninsula situated immediately to the north of the town of Schull, in West Cork, Ireland.
Mt. Gabriel is 407m high and is the highest eminence in the coastal zone south and east of Bantry Bay. A roadway serving the radar installations on the summit is open to the public.
From the peak of Mt. Gabriel, there are spectacular views South over Schull Harbour and Long Island Bay. To the east and southeast, the views take in Roaring Water Bay and its many islands, popularly known as Carbery's Hundred Isles. North and West is a panoramic view of the mountains of the Beara Peninsula and South Kerry.
The Fastnet Rock is situated some 18 km to the South, clearly visible in fine weather.
Bronze Age Mining
All over the southern and eastern slopes of the mountain is evidence of Bronze Age mining activity. The principal ore mined for was Copper. Some of the archaeological items found on the mountain are now found in the National Museum in Dublin.
Radar Domes
In the late 1970s, as part of the development of Eurocontrol (the European air traffic control system), two radar domes were built on the top of the mountain.
1982 the Irish National Liberation Army, an Irish republican paramilitary group blew up the radar domes, wrongly claiming that they were being used by NATO in violation of Irish neutrality.
Gortadrohid

Upstairs where are two double and two twin rooms (this configuration is flexible). The master room is triple aspect with with luxury en suite shower and bath and there is another luxurious bath and shower room shared by the other three rooms.
The extensive grounds are mainly gorse and heather with lawns and paths down to the waters edge in one of the most beautiful and tranquil environments one could hope for. Guests can be assured of complete privacy with a 400m gated private drive from the public road.
Being A Rated with the highest levels of insulation and latest technology in heat recovery and ventilation, the house will always be toasty warm all year round, whatever the weather outside.

It's no wonder they call West Cork “A Place Apart”. Nature sets the pace in this beautiful south west corner of Ireland, stretching from the south-coast of Kinsale to three rugged westerly peninsulas reaching into the wild Atlantic: Mizen Head, Sheep’s Head and Beara.
West Cork is the place many head for, leaving city lives behind to play along the long zig-zagging coastline, and walk or ride through peaceful inland woods and valleys. Hundreds of inlets, tiny coves, safe harbours and beaches are just right for long active days in the salty air.
There’s something restorative about the temperate climate and sub-tropical gardens, the tranquil lanes thick with fuchsia and montbretia, the sudden glimpses of water through the trees, the shifting light, and the soft greens, greys and violets of bays and distant mountains.
There’s edge-of-the-world drama too: climbing up to a mountain pass through ever-changing weather, crossing the bridge to the end of Mizen Head with the Atlantic crashing below, or taking the cable car to Dursey Island, one of over a hundred West Cork islands. Seven of these are inhabited, including Ireland’s most southerly community on Cape Clear “the storytellers’ island”, where Irish is spoken as a first language, and there’s an independent way of life.
Beyond Cape Clear, the imposing Fastnet Lighthouse stands on a rock known as Ireland’s tear drop, for emigrants to the new world, this was their last sight of their native land. The whole coast echoes with history, ancient sites, ruined castles, coastal forts, copper mines.
West Cork is both very Irish, and quite cosmopolitan, for many have ‘blown-in’ on the winds and stayed to make this beautiful place their home. There’s a strong creative community here.… It’s A Place Apart.
