Compensation Singsing, Mt Hagen Papua New Guinea, 1979
This movie was taken by Andrew Collins (aka Kang Kundi Andy) in 1979, principally at the Kondla and Rokglamp hauslains, and at Kondala Pena (Kondala Singsing Ground) during a long series of events that provided compensation to the Kanuka Palga people from the Jika people of Mt. Hagen. The compensation was for the deaths of two men - my friend Pady Kongupa's elder brother and his uncle, who were killed during an outbreak of tribal fighting in 1972, just before I came to live with them. (I met Pady in 1969 , when I first visited the Territory of New Guinea. At that time, I was 15 years old, and Pady was probably about 13 years old).
The troubles that caused the fighting were between the Jika and Yamulka tribes, but my friend's relatives were drawn into the fighting, despite it not really being 'their problem'. My friends family was residing on the land of his mother (Kukumul). For this reason, the problem was not considered theirs. They were compensated in 1979, and again in a major pig kill in 1980, and subsequently returned to the land of my friend's father (Kongupa), in the Nebliyer valley of the Western Highlands Province.
Silent super 8mm film has been combined with recordings from a simple cassette recorder, taken over a period of two months. Occasionally the film and sound recordings more or less match, though at the time that I recorded the film and sound, I never imagined that they would ever be brought together in this way. I recorded the sounds because it was wonderful to capture such precious moments - such as wandering through the village and neighboring gardens with my friends at night, with dogs barking and insects screeching, as well as random conversations in Melpa and pidgin. I must however apologise to Melpa speakers and other Highlanders who will sometimes recognise that the sound and film do not match. I hope that despite this shortcoming, the soundtrack makes what would otherwise have been a silent movie much more interesting.
The film begins in Port Moresby, where I visited Pady's uncle. It then moves to Kondala, near Mt Hagen, and early scenes show house-building and gardening. Gradually we begin practicing for the compensation singsing. Over a period of many weeks, these 'practice' sessions become more and more serious, and the crowds grow larger. The final gatherings are HUGE, with hundreds of dancers and thousands of spectators. The final compensation involved the payment of almost K100,000, but also over 100 cassowaries, in addition to pigs, cuscus, lizards, snakes, tigaso oil and megapod eggs.
The songs and dialogue that is heard mainly comes from my friend's immediate family: Kongupa, Kukumul, Jim, Rubdi, and Ambuga Ai, as well as his uncle Nolde.
This movie will eventually be archived in the Melanesian film archive maintained by Dr Michael Alpers, in Perth, Western Australia. Copies of the movie have also been provided to surviving members of my late friend's family in Goroka and Mt Hagen.
