Ashe County is one of the top 20 disc golf courses in the world (according to PDGA) and I wish my video could do it justice. This course is one of the best I've ever played and my nickname for it is Mountian Hallways. The front 8 are relatively open with great fairways and some trees that you have to pick a gap to shoot through, but this course gets fun on hole #9. This is your first chance to see what makes this course great. Its a 660' par 4 that you're throwing deep down a mountain to an open fairway and the basket to the right. The next couple of holes are going up and down the mountain side with tight gaps and deep plunges. If you get a great strait precision shot, consider yourself lucky. One wrong bounce and your disc is rolling away form the basket. Grab some friends, take a weekend off and go check out this course. 5/5 in my book, more courses need to be like this!

Zaloos Canoes, Kayaks & Tubes on the New River
Here's a sample of the beautiful New River in Ashe County North Carolina. Zaloos Canoes, Kayaks & Tubes has been inviting people to discover this hidden treasure since 1976. This river is unique in that it is considered to be one of the five oldest rivers in the world, actually predating the Appalachian Mountains. It is also home to the prehistoric Hellbender Salamander, this species grows to an average length of 2 feet.
Odds are you will never see one of our Hellbenders as they live under rocks, but what you will see is a fantastic view from the New River Valley surrounded by beautiful forests and tranquil pasture land. This is a very gentle river, you won't encounter rapids or dangerous water on the stretch serviced by Zaloos. The New River is also considered one of the premier small mouth bass fishing rivers in the southeast. You can also catch trout as well as many other varieties. Have your own boat, no problem, Zaloos will shuttle your boats as well, so feel free to bring your own canoe, kayak or even your favorite tube.
Zaloos is located five river miles above the New River State Park Wagoner Access (ncparks.gov). This is a fantastic campground. Many of Zaloos customers canoe into this campground to begin overnight trips that range from one night to several nights all the way to the Virginia Border about 34 miles of river downstream from Zaloos.
Located only 4 miles from Zaloos is Raccoon Holler Campground(raccoonholler.com). A fantastic family oriented place to relax and use as a base to explore the New River and Ashe County. Located near Raccoon Holler Campground is the community of Glendale Springs, most famous as the home of the Church of the Frescoes. Beautiful work by Carolina native Ben Long who learned his art in Florence Italy while serving an eight year apprenticeship. Glendale Springs is also home to the Glendale Springs Inn, The Greenhouse Gift Shoppe and Rodie's Parkway Restaurant.
The Northwest Trading Post located on the Blue Ridge Parkway at Glendale Springs is a favorite stop as well.
The nearby town of West Jefferson is a high country treat. Interesting shops, restaurants and modern AirBnB's.
Mount Jefferson State Park towers over the town, a must see.
Ashe County is also the Christmas Capital of the United States. This county supplies millions of trees to individuals and large consumer operations all over the country. Ashe County is known particularly for the Fraser Fir, a very popular and hardy tree that is native to this region.

The Blue Ridge Mountains are a physiographic province of the larger Appalachian Mountains range. The mountain range is located in the eastern United States, and extends 550 miles southwest from southern Pennsylvania through Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia. This province consists of northern and southern physiographic regions, which divide near the Roanoke River gap. To the west of the Blue Ridge, between it and the bulk of the Appalachians, lies the Great Appalachian Valley, bordered on the west by the Ridge and Valley province of the Appalachian range.
The Blue Ridge Mountains are noted for having a bluish color when seen from a distance. Trees put the blue in Blue Ridge, from the isoprene released into the atmosphere, thereby contributing to the characteristic haze on the mountains and their distinctive color.
Within the Blue Ridge province are two major national parks – the Shenandoah National Park in the northern section, and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in the southern section – and eight national forests including George Washington and Jefferson National Forests, Cherokee National Forest, Pisgah National Forest, Nantahala National Forest and Chattahoochee National Forest. The Blue Ridge also contains the Blue Ridge Parkway, a 469-mile (755 km) long scenic highway that connects the two parks and is located along the ridge crest-lines with the Appalachian Trail.
