Travel: Mt Karioi, Raglan, New Zealand
5 November 2015: We hiked the Karioi trail in beautiful Raglan that turned into a 6 hour effort of mud, climbing and awesome views. It was all worth it and the summit turned out to be a helipad.
All filmed on a Gopro Hero 4 Silver and edited in FCP X.

Mount Karioi Summit Hike
Mount Karioi is a 2.4 million year old extinct volcano, south-east of Raglan in the Waikato region of New Zealand's North Island. It was the earliest of the line of 4 volcanoes, the largest of which is Mount Pirongia (the others are Kakepuku and Te Kawa). Karioi forms a background to many parts of Raglan.
It was windy and as we tramped up we saw clouds approaching the mountain. By the time we got to the top it was enveloped in cloud, very windy, and raining a bit too, but they dispersed as we hiked back down. It ended up becoming a fine evening. So no damn view from the top!
Ceolskog is the solo folk metal project of Adam Helliwell from Hamilton, New Zealand, and the name given to his nature-themed YouTube channel. Ceol is an Irish word meaning music, and skog means forest in Norwegian and Swedish. No, I don't have a Patreon. Mt Karioi
A big day out. I ended up going a lot further than intended. I was headed just for the lookout, but ended up having to go on to the summit to get the shots I needed.
Mount Pirongia Summit
Mount Pirongia is an extinct volcano, located in the Waikato region of New Zealand's North Island. It reaches 959 meters, and is the highest peak in the Waikato region. It was active in the late Pliocene and early Pleistocene times. Pirongia's many peaks are basaltic cones, created by successive volcanic eruptions, about 2.5 million years ago.
Brotherhood Review:
Mt. Pirongia is one of the best examples of a classic bush trek the Waikato has the offer. The track is completely surrounded by dense native bush and the track itself is mostly mud and roots. The routes are well trodden, although overgrown, and easy to navigate. In the fog/cloud, however, visibility is poor and it easy to lose direction, or divert from the track. It is best to remember that Pirongia is a mountain range, so there are multiple peaks along the route, before reaching the summit. The trek involves several steep rock climbs, for which chains are provided.
There a multiple routes up to the summit of Mt. Pirongia, ranging in different abilities and lengths. We took the Mahaukura to Tirohanga Track. It took us 8 hours to complete the round trek.
Sturdy boots are a must on this trek, with the track being mostly mud and having some covered areas which do not dry up.
With the Experience we had on this mountain we rate it:
5/10
