I was considering swapping the audio for music. But because it's so subjective, I figure it's best to let you decide what to play along with it.

Mount Kembla Ring track
On my way to the Mount Kembla Ring track, while walking along Cordeaux Road, stopped to have a look at Windy Gully Cemetery. This was set up to bury many of the victims of the 1902 mine disaster as the small cemetery at the church in Mount Kembla was not large enough at the time to accommodate the 96 victims. Towards the end of the walk I took a slight detour to check out the old World War Two tank trap.

Running Mount Keira Ring Track to the Lookout
Sunny afternoon trail run around the Mount Keira Ring Track and Dave Walshs track in Wollongong. Starting at the bottom near the university it winds up to the Mount Keira lookout and continues around the opposite side on the way down fishing back at the university.

The information board at the start recommends that you do the walk in a clock-wise direction. I did it the other way. As usual I often wandered off the track, and not quite halfway around this led me to climb a rocky outcrop and find myself outside the lookout railing. I hopped over and walk along the road back to the car. Still yet to do the whole loop. Photos -
Mt Kembla Summit Track 2018
A walk up to the summit of Mt Kembla, the tallest mountain on the Illawarra escarpment. Starting point, Mt Kembla look out at the end of Cordeaux Road, Kembla Heights. It took us about 2 hours with stops to do the return 3 km bush walk. There are some steep and challenging bits, but we were able to do it with a four year old and adults of varying fitness levels. Recommend sturdy lace up walking shoes and long pants if you don't want your legs scratched. Take your water bottle , snacks and camera, but please take all your rubbish with you. It was sad to see two water bottles thrown into the bush where they will never degrade, but apart from that the track is rubbish free and full of beautiful native vegetation. You are rewarded with stunning views to the south of Mt Kembla over Lake Illawarra.

A walk to find an old mine I had heard may have been in the area. On a previous walk I found some ruins.
I was surprised at how quickly I found the mine entrances, though I did nearly miss it.

I had the opportunity to visit the old Mount Kembla Mine. This was the site of Australia's worst industrial accident. 96 Men and boys were lost.

Dave Walsh's Track / Mount Keira Ring track
Ascending the western face of Mt Keira, the track climbs a steep ridge with magnificent views, providing a link between the Mt Keira Ring Track and the Mt Keira summit. On the small section of the Mt Keira Ring Track I did, I found a grove of Dendrocnide excelsa (Giant Stinging Tress).

Mt Kembla Stories
Mt Kembla in the Illawarra region of New South Wales, Australia has a long and fascinating history. This clip highlights just some of its history beginning with the Dreaming , the Dharawal called the mountain Jumbulla, it was the men's mountain, a place of good hunting. In 1803, Hat Hill (Mt Kembla) was visited by Samuel Brown, a famous English botanist, who with the help of Aboriginal guides collected the first two koalas to be scientifically described by Europeans - the type specimens. By 1810, cedar getters were at work, making inroads into the thick temperate rainforest. Followed closely by farmers, the land, piece by piece, was carved up among them, pushing the Dharawal off their rich lands. These early pioneers endured terrible hardships, but the land was fertile and a community sprung up sustained by its dairies and orchards.
Oil bearing shales were discovered along American Creek, and the first Kerosene works in Australia were established by John Graham as the American Creek Pioneer Kerosene Works. Both the shale and local coal were mined, the coal to fuel the retorts. Cheap American imports saw the local industry decline and the works were sold to Ebeneezer Vickery of the Mt Kembla Coal and Oil Company. Mt Kembla Colliery became one of the largest coal mines in the district, boasting its own railway line and port. It was not all smooth sailing though, with a number of strikes demanding better conditions fought during the 1890s. The pursuit of the black diamonds came at an incredible cost to the people of Kembla Heights. On the 31st of July the mine exploded and took the lives of 96 men and boys who were working at the pit. The Mt Kembla Mine disaster, shook the community to the core and tore families apart. With no bread winner, some families left the district, others found it too painful to stay and moved onto the northern coal fields of the Hunter region or to Lithgow.
In time the rhythm of life returned. This isolated community put their lives back together as best they could and looked after their own. Twelve years later, the local communities answered Australia's call and sent their youth to fight in World War One. Twenty-nine of her finest were killed or died of illness while overseas, many more went to early graves suffering the effects of gassing and trauma.
