ONE OF THE HARDEST HIKES I'VE DONE! (Mt. Kinabalu via Ferrata, Sabah, Malaysia)
We decided to do Mt. Kinabalu via Ferrata just after Christmas, and boy it was definitely a hike to remember! To reach Low’s Peak only takes 2 days and 1 night, but it is a lot harder than people think it really is. The trek up to the summit is approximately 9km, with a total ascent of 2,220m. It’s a long uphill struggle the whole way!
When you reach the top, you are fatigued, and there is no mercy on your legs as you have to endure the same distance and steepness but this time, going down.
You want the perfect leg day workout? Come to Mt. Kinabalu.
The adventure is definitely worth it. Mt. Kinabalu is one of every hiker’s bucket list. It has beautiful vegetation, holding approximately 6,000 species of plants, 326 species of birds and more than a hundred mammalian species. Mount Kinabalu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is the 20th most prominent mountain in the world by topographic prominence.

In August 2018, I decided to climb Mount Kinabalu to see if I can adapt to higher altitude. Kota Kinabalu proves more than just the mountain that's attractive to me. The small town was filled with amazingly friendly people and I really enjoyed my self before and after the climb. The Sutera Sanctuary Lodges was unexpectedly amazing. The accommodation was comfortable for what it is and the food they serves was delicious! This is not a paid feedback.
How much did I pay for the climb. excluding airfare and accommodation outside of the climb?
Package at Sutera Sanctuary Lodges lodges
Accommodation + Meals + 1 bunk bed : SGD 457
Money Needed to exchange:
1. Return transport from airport to Kinabalu National Park : 5+5 + 25 + 25 = RM60 ( SGD 22 )
2. Fees to Kinabalu National Park :
* Climb permit @ 200 MYR
* Park entrance fee @ 15 MYR
* Insurance @ 7 MYR
* Mountain guide fee 230 MYR (can be shared up to 4 pax) I shared with another person
* Shuttle transfers KNP office-Timpohon gate-KNP office @ 17 MYR
* Total : RM469 = SGD 169

Climbing Mount Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia, Borneo...
A short film documenting our not so short climb of Mount Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. Crazily we climbed the mountain in one day which was do-able if you're fit-ish and determined. It was hard though. How hard? Well, I've ran marathons before and this was definitely harder - no kidding. My legs were in pieces for days after words. Nevertheless, what an experience.

Mount Kinabalu (Malay: Gunung Kinabalu) is a prominent mountain on the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia. It is located in the East Malaysian state of Sabah and is protected as Kinabalu National Park, a World Heritage Site. Kinabalu is the highest peak in Borneo's Crocker Range and is the highest mountain in the Malay Archipelago.[1] Mount Kinabalu is also the 20th most prominent mountain in the world by topographic prominence.[2]
In 1997, a re-survey using satellite technology established its summit (known as Low's Peak) height at 4,095 metres (13,435 ft) above sea level, which is some 6 metres (20 ft) less than the previously thought and hitherto published figure of 4,101 metres (13,455 ft).[3]
Mount Kinabalu includes the Kinabalu montane alpine meadows ecoregion in the montane grasslands and shrublands biome. The mountain and its surroundings are among the most important biological sites in the world, with between 5000 and 6000 species of plants, 326 species of birds, and more than 100 mammalian species identified. Among this rich collection of wildlife are famous species such as the gigantic Rafflesia plants and the orangutan. Mount Kinabalu has been accorded UNESCO World Heritage status.[4][5][6]
Low's Peak can be climbed quite easily by a person in good physical condition and there is no need for mountaineering equipment at any point on the main route. Other peaks along the massif, however, require rock climbing skills.
Climbers must be accompanied by accredited guides at all times due to national park regulations. There are two main starting points for the climb: the Timpohon Gate (located 5.5 km from Kinabalu Park Headquarters, at an altitude of 1,866 metres (6,122 ft)),[18] and the Mesilau Nature Resort. The latter starting point is slightly higher in elevation, but crosses a ridge, adding about two kilometres to the ascent and making the total elevation gain slightly higher. The two trails meet about two kilometres before Laban Rata.
Accommodation is available inside the park or outside near the headquarters. Sabah Parks has privatised Mount Kinabalu activities to an organisation called Sutera Sanctuary Lodges (also known as Sutera Harbour). The mountain may be climbed on a single day trip, or hikers may (usually) stay one night at Laban Rata Resthouse at 3,270 metres (10,730 ft) to complete the climb in 2 days, finishing the ascent and descending on the second day. The majority of climbers begin the ascent on day one of a two-day hike from Timpohon gate at 1,866 metres (6,122 ft), reaching this location either by minibus or by walking, and then walk to Laban Rata. Most people accomplish this part of the climb in 3 to 6 hours. Since there are no roads, the supplies for the Laban Rata Resthouse are carried by porters, who bring up to 35 kilograms of supplies on their backs. Hot food and beverages are available at Laban Rata. Most rooms have no hot water in the bathrooms and whilst the dining area is heated, most rooms are not. The last 2 kilometres (6,600 ft), from the Laban Rata Resthouse at 3,270 metres (10,730 ft) to Low's Peak (summit) at 4,095.2 metres (13,436 ft), takes between 2 and 4 hours. The last part of the climb is on naked granite rock.
Given the high altitude, some people may suffer from altitude sickness and should return immediately to the bottom of the mountain, as breathing and any further movement becomes increasingly difficult.[19]

Mount Kinabalu, Sabah - Summiting the Highest Mountain in Malaysia - Full HD
• The Summit of Borneo
Mount Kinabalu (Gunung Kinabalu) is the most dramatic feature in Sabah and the tallest peak between the Himalayas & the New Guinea. Towering at 4,095 metres (13,435 feet), Mount Kinabalu exerts a magical quality that is both indescribable and unbelievable. The mountain itself represents one of the world's youngest batholiths: an old magna chamber that was forced through the earthr's crust.
• Legends & Myths
Though young, it is the central focus of Kinabalu Park and the legends of the KadazanDusun people, Sabah's largest ethnic group. The KadazanDusun believe that the mountain is the sacred resting ground of the spirits of their ancestors. Mount Kinabalu derives its name from the kadazan word, 'Aki Nabalu', meaning 'the revered place of the dead'. There are many folklores and fables that tell stories of how Kinabalu got its name. The mysterious KadazanDusun tribe believes that spirits dwell on the mountain top.

Kinabalu National Park or Taman Negara Kinabalu in Malay, established as one of the first national parks of Malaysia in 1964, is Malaysia's first World Heritage Site designated by UNESCO in December 2000 for its outstanding universal values and the role as one of the most important biological sites in the world.
Located on the west coast of Sabah, east Malaysia on the island of Borneo; it covers an area of 754 square kilometers surrounding Mount Kinabalu, which at 4,095.2 metres, is the highest mountain on the island of Borneo.
The park is one of the most popular tourist spot in Sabah as well as in Malaysia. In 2004, more than 415,360 visitors and 43,430 climbers visited the Park.
Kinabalu Park is situated on the Crocker Range on the eastern coast of Sabah. It is located within the district of Ranau, within the West Coast Division. The park is not to be confused with Crocker Range National Park which is a separate park in the south.
The park headquarters is 88 kilometers away from the city of Kota Kinabalu. There are highways and sealed roads leading towards the park headquarters from other parts of Sabah. It is situated on the southern boundary of Kinabalu Park, at an elevation of 1,563m (5,128 feet).
This park is administered by an organization called Sabah Parks. Accommodations in the form of chalets can be found in the park, mostly around the headquarters. Reservations for accommodation and mountain climbing guides are processed through Sutera Sanctuary Lodges. Every person who wishes to climb the mountain must be accompanied by a qualified guide.
The mountain summit trail begins at Timpohon. There is also an alternative route called the Mesilau Trail.
A notable feature of the park is Low's Gully. It is a 1.6 kilometre deep ravine stretching 10 kilometres on the side of the mountain peak.

Mount Kinabalu National Park - City Video Guide
Anyone with an interest in hiking or mountain climbing must embark on a Mount Kinabalu National Park tour. This Malaysian gem is visually stunning, and is also one of the most easily accessible peaks in the world.
Sightseeing in Mount Kinabalu National Park—known as the “Home of the Spirits” to the locals due to the ethereal, ghostlike mist that curls around the summit—will take you through multiple climatic zones. Hike through rainforests, look over a bed of clouds, watch the sunset from a sub-alpine meadow, and gaze over the park from the top of the summit, all in one day at Mount Kinabalu National Park. Moderately fit individuals can climb to the summit and back in two days, staying overnight at a lodge when you reach the top. When you awaken the next day, watch the sunrise from almost 2.5 miles above sea level—it’s a truly spectacular sight.
Those who aren’t keen on hiking up the mountainside can wander through the rainforest closer to ground level, learning about the vast ecosystem that has made Mount Kinabalu National Park such an important UNESCO World Heritage Site.
