DERM 58RM Newport to Ararat 10/11/13
On Sunday 10th of November 2013, the Diesel Electric Rail Motor Preservation Association of Victoria (DERMPAV) ran a tour from Newport to Ararat and return (via North Shore) using their restored DERM No.58RM, built in 1930. This was the first time a heritage tour had run on the line between Ballarat and Ararat since the section reopened to traffic in 2004.
This video contains a handful of scenes shot from on-board 58RM at various points throughout the journey.
We start off along the heading down the Geelong line, with some footage around Little River and Lara. At 01:07 we cut to the other side of Ballarat, running along the single line section to Ararat. At 02:20 the railmotor stops at the closed station of Trawalla for a photostop. We then see some footage after Buangor, with Mount Langi Ghiran in the background. At 03:00 we cut to the return journey, filming out the rear of the railmotor. At 04:45 we reach the top of Beaufort bank, and shortly after pass through the township and station of Beaufort. At 05:47 we are approaching Ballarat, with the former Ballarat saleyards line on the left. At 06:20 we roll into Ballarat station, where a V/Line VLocity is waiting to run to Melbourne. At 07:34 we are rolling down grade on the dual gauge towards North Geelong. At 07:56 we're back in the suburban network, passing the brand new station at Williams Landing, before a final shot on the up side of Laverton, with a Siemens set coming off the Altona line.

Ararat, Australia's Golden Town Dies! Pt.2
What does a Town do when both its major public and private sector employers close shop around the same time?
The town dies, people leave in the search for work, the community is destroyed and its people demoralized.
This is what happened to Ararat in the early 1990's.
All up, roughly one thousand public sector jobs were lost from the closure of the Psychiatric Hospital, the Railways and Telecom.
A downturn in manufacturing was also the deathknell for the town's biggest private sector employer, Packard/CTA.
Watch this short documentary to learn how the town was affected
