Entry to Mt Maunganui (Mauao) Base Track Walk, Mount Maunganui, NZ
The famous “base track” around Mauao in Mount Maunganui is one of New Zealand’s most popular scenic walks.
The 3.4km route will take you full circle around this extinct volcano and can be walked in either direction – from the white sand beach beside the ocean right around to the sheltered waters of Pilot Bay and vice versa.
Nearly one million people are believed to walk up or around Mauao every year, although no official records are kept. The pathway is wide in most places, with plenty of room for pushchairs, runners, and groups of people to walk side-by-side. It’s a good idea to walk on the left-hand side of the path (the same direction as we drive on our roads) to make room for people walking the opposite way.
There are public toilets at both ends of this track at Pilot Bay and in front of the surf lifesaving club. You’ll also find a water fountain on the ocean beach side, so make use of whatever facilities you need before you set off.
Mauao is almost completely surrounded by water and this base track offers fantastic harbour and ocean views. Watch vessels of all shapes and sizes sail past as they head for the marina, port or out to the open sea. This track is a great place to watch cruise ships arrive and depart also, as they pass amazingly close to Mauao’s rocks and sandy beaches. And if you look closely you can often spot a seal or two sunbathing on the rocks as you walk around.
Ancient pohutukawa trees cling gracefully to the slopes of Mauao, providing shade and a spectacular setting in which to walk. Every December these trees bloom with crimson flowers, earning the nickname “New Zealand’s Christmas tree”.
There are numerous park benches to sit and enjoy the view as you walk around this track. Matakana Island’s stunning beaches and forest can be clearly seen across the harbour entrance, and offshore islands are also visible on the ocean side of Mauao.
And there’s no reason why you have to stick to the well-worn pathway. Wander down to the sand or shell beaches as you come across them and dip your toes into the water. Or scramble over the large rocks which surround its base. Just be mindful of the surf as large waves can crash ashore here when conditions are rough, and lifeguards are not on hand.
Mauao was once a Maori pa site and evidence of trenches and ancient shell middens can be seen as you walk around. A small number of sheep now graze on the grassy slopes and are fenced off from the surrounding track.
It will take you around 45 minutes to circumnavigate this glorious base track. Finish your walk off with an ice-cream on the beach or a cold drink at a nearby café.

Luxury Waterfront Private Resort
Own your own private gated Resort right here in New Zealand.
This is a property for the serious-those moving comfortably in seven figure circles, who appreciate fine living and don't quibble about price because they know quality when they see it.
Panoramic unobstructed ocean and beach views and tropical gardens enliven this superb 663m2 (approximate) residence beautifully set on 1401m2 stretching from Marine Parade to Muricata Avenue with access from both. A private gated entry introduces the home with drive-in entry and exit through the portico, and a home that features exceptional indoor-outdoor spaces tailor-made for relaxed enjoyment and entertaining.
Kerry Avery, from Avery Team Architecture in Auckland, designed the contemporary sophisticated home for generous family living, with pitched ceilings offering height and overhead natural light in living areas. Split levels add interest to the various entertainment areas as well.
Upstairs focuses on family living, entertainment and views. Lounge and dining expand outside to a sheltered balcony that basks in stunning ocean panorama-thanks to low dunes along this stretch of Marine Parade. Overhead, motorised louvres allow sun or shade, while other balconies-off both sides of family living- give sun all day and shelter from breeze. Gas fires sit in both family and lounge-polished black fossil slabs in the lounge typifying this home's finish.
It shows in the gourmet kitchen featuring American oak floors, lacquered cabinetry with black granite bench tops enhancing the class. Bathroom luxury provides spa baths in the master and family bathroom-both generous to a fault with custom vanities. A walk through dressing room in the master suite is impressive with custom made built-in furniture.
Downstairs, the guest suite moves through bathroom facilities to step into a Pacific Rim style living room, including full kitchen, finished with imported lattice timber doors and granite benches. Large glazing on two sides links this room with outside recreation- its basalt floor paving matching the outdoors in a self-contained suite when pool and tennis beckon.
Also downstairs is an executive office, air-conditioned wine cellar- racked and ready for nearly 1200 bottles- huge garaging and gymnasium also used as a guest overflow room. A private spa pool nestled amongst the palms outside the gym. A dedicated boat park is gated and secure with its own driveway off Muricata Avenue.
Specs are many and impressive, including full automation- in lighting, touch-control electric blinds, audio and telecommunications throughout the home, plus movement proximity sensors on gates and entry doors.
The home features four bedrooms, executive office, three luxury bathrooms, gourmet granite kitchen, family room, guest suite with lounge and full kitchen, lift, racked 1100 bottle wine cellar, gymnasium/spa, four car garaging, 14.5m L-shaped heated pool with fishtail waterfall, synthetic floodlit tennis court, dedicated boat parking.
The location allows you to walk to restaurants and cafes should you desire.
This distinctive property is Mount Maunganui's finest home for sale on the Golden Mile waterfront, I would be delighted to show you, call me for a private viewing.
Driving Around Mt Maunganui
my first track Mount Maunganui Tauranga New Zealand
Mount Maunganui is located atop a sand bar that connects Mauao to the mainland, a geographical formation known as a tombolo. Because of this formation, the residents of Mount Maunganui have both a harbour beach (Pilot Bay) and an ocean beach with great surf, within a short distance. At the base of Mauao, the distance between the harbour and ocean side is a couple of blocks.
The ocean beach has Mauao or Mount Maunganui at its western end, and a man made land bridge connecting Moturiki Island at its eastern end
Mt Maunganui random event
So I did the short walk up Mt Maunganui in Tauranga, when I made it to the top, This strange character starter talking to me about aliens.
He goes on to say I needed to be in the right place when it happens.
Are you happy now Ben?
Mount Maunganui Base Track is Pram Friendly (almost)
Mauao is a historic reserve owned by Maori and managed by Tauranga City Council. The base track is 3.5 km loop and takes about 40 minutes to walk with beautiful views the whole way around. It is suitable for strollers and wheelchairs except for one section on the western side which due to a slip recently has had a staircase built, approx 30 steps up & 30 down.

Mt Maunganui
So this is Mauao, also known as The Mount, an extinct volcanic cone at the end of the peninsula north-east of Tauranga's city center, just look at it towering over the town of Mt Maunganui. There are various scenic walks you can take to the summit, 232 meters above sea level. Its a very popular destination so I will recommend to start your walk very early.
People flock to the summit for various reasons, fitness seemed to be a very popular reason, but I was attracted here by a photo I've seen, taken from the summit overlooking Mt Maunganui. It was breath taking and I just had to see it for myself.
So we made it to the summit, and its finally time to search for the least obstructed view to get my shot, and there it is... a little path going down to a cliff edge, but let me just warn you, to get there is scary, the path is steep and brittle, making it very slippery with noting stopping you from falling over the edge!
The views over Mt Maunganui is really awesome and well worth the effort.
Going down we took the shorter route, it has way more stairs but the views... surely makes up for it!
Thanks for watching and please subscribe

The Mount, Mount Maunganui, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand, Base Walk.
At the very tip of the Mt.Maunganui Peninsula is a dormant volcano - Mauao - which rises to 230 metres above sea level. There's a choice of tracks leading to the summit, some more challenging than others. Huge views of the harbour, beach and Pacific Ocean make the effort totally worthwhile.

Ship moving Pilot Bay, Mt Maunganui, Tauranga, NZ- Video1
Pilot Bay is one of Hawke's Bay Region's premier destinations – a beautiful sheltered beach which sits on the edge of Tauranga Harbour and beneath Mount Maunganui’s towering mountain ‘Mauao’.
This bay runs along the southwestern side of Mount Maunganui’s peninsula and is sheltered from the open ocean. Small waves gently lap at the shore here as the tide flows in and out, providing calm swimming conditions all year round.
This is a great spot for families with young children who want to splash about in the water without getting knocked off their feet by big waves. Hunt for shells, build sandcastles, draw pictures in the sand and enjoy swimming with your little ones here.
Pilot Bay’s sandy beach gradually rises upwards to become a wide, flat grass reserve which extends back towards the main road, The Mall. A wooden boardwalk runs parallel to this road so you can stroll the full length of Pilot Bay to reach the base of Mauao and the start of the mountain’s popular 3.4km base track.
A row of stately Norfolk Pine trees line Pilot Bay, helping provide a picture-perfect scene for cruise passengers as they sail through the harbour entrance and berth at the nearby port.
Pilot Bay is the best place to view these magnificent cruise ships up close. Bring a picnic dinner down to this beach and watch them depart on a warm summer’s evening. The largest ships attract huge crowds of locals who cheer and wave goodbye to passengers as they sail away.
There are plenty of barbeques and picnic tables for you to use along Pilot Bay, and cafes and ice-cream parlours are also just a short walk away.
Kayaks and other water sports equipment are available for hire right on the shore here. This is a great place to launch your jet ski, stand up paddle board or watch waka ama crews train for their next regatta. Pilot Bay is also a popular location for triathlons and other open water swimming events during summer months.
A boat ramp and limited parking for boat trailers is available down the Mauao end of Pilot Bay, and public toilets can be found about half way along The Mall.
Pilot Bay is a picturesque place to relax in the sun, enjoy the harbour views and watch the world go by. With stunning scenery, clear blue water and plenty to see and do, it sums up everything we love about the Bay of Plenty.
Paragliding New Zealand - Mount Maunganui
This sacred mountain is in Tauranga in the Bay of plenty. A beautiful site for paragliding, but be careful, and remember to have a visitor paragliding license if you are from another country. You also have to register your flying to the local club.

Climbing Mount Maunganui | Mauao Summit Track
MT MAUNGANUI is the most famous landmark in the Bay Of Plenty region. It stands 232m above sea level and its summit tracks are not a casual stroll. You’ll need a reasonably good level of fitness and mobility to climb to the top.
The information below is from the website
MT MAUNGANUI (MAUAO) SUMMIT WALK
Venture to the top of our most famous landmark. This walk takes about 40 minutes and requires a good level of fitness. Choose from two scenic tracks to reach the 232m-high summit. The view at the top is worth the effort.
You can see Mount Maunganui’s iconic mountain, Mauao, for miles around – and when you’re standing at its summit, the view is even more impressive.
Mauao stands 232m above sea level and its summit tracks are not a casual stroll. You’ll need a reasonably good level of fitness and mobility to climb to the top but it’s certainly worth the effort.
You can survey the entire Western Bay of Plenty from this vantage point – right down the white sand coastline to Papamoa and beyond, over the harbour and Tauranga’s city suburbs, and north across Matakana Island towards Bowentown and Waihi Beach.
