Climbing Chambe Peak, Mulanje Mountains, Malawi
My hike up Chambe Peak in the Mulanje Mountains of Malawi in July, 2017. The first day we hiked up to the Chambe Basin and slept in a rustic cabin, then the next day did a seven hour round trip to the peak. I was climbing with a local guide named Story. I was a little shy to record in front of him, so my video suffers a little from that.

How to Summit Mulanje Sapitwa Peak, Malawi, Ep 177
This is a 3-day trek in the Mulanje range to summit Sapitwa, the highest peak. It starts from the Likhubula gate, heads up the Skyline trail to reach the basecamp at Chisepo Hut. The following day I summit and return to the hut for lunch. Then spend the afternoon hiking to the Chamber Hut for the the night. The following day I return to the Likhubula gate via the Chapaluka route.

Trip Details:
Day1.
Started from the DDAP Cottage parking area (Likhubula Forestry gate), following the Skyline route to the Chamba Basin, across the Knife Edge gully and up to the crest of the Chisepo valley (5.5 hours). Note that this track is steeper than the alternate (Chapaluka) and more exposed to the sun.
Then over the crest and into the Chisepo valley and on to the hut (1.5 hours). This section will be re-traced on the return from the Chisepo hut tomorrow afternoon.
Day 2.
To the Summit: Left Chisepo hut at 4:40 am following the path behind the hut up into the granite slabs and boulders to the ridge line (1 hard hour). This section is the hardest. Then up and down for an additional 2.5 hours to reach the peak. Follow the red paint marks. Two additional difficult parts. Note there is a camping spot just below the summit (with a cave) and two small camp spots on the actual summit.
Then back to the hut for lunch before setting off towards yesterdays Knife Edge Chisepo gully (part 2 of Day 1 trek). Then back into the Chambe Valley and on to the Chambe Hut for the evening. The entire stretch took 2.5 hours.
Day 3.
Easy skirt of the Chambe Valley back to the Malerebe River and then return to the CCAP Cottage via the Chapaluka River Route (and the Likhubula Falls). Total return time of 3 hours. This route is well shaded.

SAPITWA OF MULANJE MOUNTAIN (MYTHOLOGY)
For the official real mountain range in Malawi, see Mount Mulanje on the local tourism site at
Mulanje Mountain known for its majestic Sapitwa peak is an important and mythological mountain in ancient Malawi myths and tales.
However the mythological side of Mulanje Mountain should not be confused with the real geographic Mulanje Massifsaid to measure approximately 22×26 kilometres with a maximum elevation of 3,002 m at its highest point, Sapitwa Peak.
The mythical Sapitwa is described as a dwelling place for various spirits including gods and goddesses, and marvelous plants and trees like the cedar. Mulanje Mountain is also known as the “Island in the Sky” and the place of mizimu (spirits) in various tales.
Amwandionerapati or Abathwa (short people) also known as Akafula and strong fighters were believed to be found on Mulanje Mountain.
The mythical spirits of the short people with protruding bellies and armed with axes in myths are believed to still guard a sacred entrance to the mythical kingdom and ask the dreaded question, “Mwandionera pati.” (“From where did you see me?”)
If one answers the question wrongly, the Abathwa (short people) slap the person hard on the right cheek and that could either cause death or serious injures according to myths.
The said people never liked being referred to as being short and were believed to be very strong and warriors. Their legend is told by many traditional healers in Malawi who source their herbs and concoctions from the mountain.
If the person answers “From very far away”, they are believed to have access to the first entrance of the mythical realm of the mountain before having to pass a serpent spirit.
Sapitwa is mythically known as a “forbidden place” because it is home to a royal spirit family who get offended when certain rituals are not followed when one goes there according to some healers in Mulanje.

Mulanje: Summit Nayawani, Malawi Outdoors Ruff Cut
A weekend outing from Lejeri Hydro Station to Madzeka hut with a large group of Mountain Club of Malawi members. And for some of us the objective was the summit of Nayawani South at 2,345m. A hard steep hike with a harder descent in the rain.

Video Details
This is a Mountain Club of Malawi weekend outing to the Madzeka Hut.
And for some of us, a trek to the summit of Nayawani South.
It starts out in the Lujeri Tea Estates.and climbs steeply up to the Mulanje plateau.
It's hard work for us, but it's even harder for the many wood thieves stealing cedar up here.
And lots of ladder work on the upper stages. Then a forest wonderland.
Home sweet home for the night.
Nayawani South. Today's objective.
We made it.
Clouds, it's time to go. A lovely day for a steep descent.

Malawi - Mount Mulanje, October 2018
Mount Mulanje is a large monadnock in Southern Malawi. A monadnock is an isolated peak rising like an island above its surrounding plain. Mount Mulanje is a special mountain as it is a group of over 20 peaks rising from a high plateau averaging around 2000m in altitude. The highest peak on the mountain is Sapitwa Peak. At an elevation of 3,002m, it is the highest point in Central Africa. Summiting the mountain involves some hard scrambling and the top section can be treacherous to navigate in bad weather. Mount Mulanje is known for its thick mist and storms that sweep across while the rest of the country is bathed in sunshine. I experienced this first hand during my summit of Sapitwa Peak. About an hour into my descent, the thunderclouds rolled in and the rain and hail followed. Most of the rocks are covered with a type of lichen that becomes dangerously slippery as they become wet. Most of my descent was done by sliding on my hands and butt! Mount Mulanje was an amazing adventure and I hope you enjoy the video.
Sapitwa translates as “Don't go there!” in the local Chichewa language.
“To get lost is to learn the way” – African proverb
Welcome to Mulanje
This video will give you an insight into the beautiful Mulanje district in southern Malawi, following my adventures and experiences working and living here.
This is a place I have come to know and love and I hope I'll be able to share some of my feelings of admiration and joy in being in this small corner of the globe.
If any of you are thinking of a trip to Malawi anytime, I would highly recommend taking the time to visit the beautiful Mulanje District and even to climb Malawi's highest peak, Mount Mulanje (Sapitwa is the highest point. Beautiful tea plantations and rolling hills surround the mountain making Mulanje simply stunning.
Watch this video to get a sneak peak of Mulanje's beauty as I take you on my commute to work.
Feel free to comment below with possible topics that you might want me to cover whilst in Malawi. I'll do my best.
Enjoy
