FROM
Norfolk Island (Norfuk: Norfuk Ailen) is a small inhabited island in the Pacific Ocean located between Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia, and along with two neighbouring islands forms one of Australia's external territories.
The Norfolk Island pine, a symbol of the island pictured in its flag, is a striking evergreen tree endemic to the island and is quite popular in Australia, where two related species also groW.
Geography
Norfolk Island is located in the South Pacific Ocean, east of Australia. Norfolk Island is the main island of the island group the territory encompasses and is located at 29°02′S 167°57′E. It has an area of 34.6 km² (13.3 mi²), with no large-scale internal bodies of water but 32 km of coastline. The island's highest point is Mt. Bates (319 m above sea level), located in the northwest quadrant of the island. The majority of the terrain is suitable for farming and other agricultural uses. Philip Island, the second largest island of the territory, is located at 29°07′S 167°57′E, several kilometres south of the main island.
The coastline of Norfolk Island consists, to varying degrees, of cliff faces. A downward slope exists towards Sydney Bay and Emily Bay, the site of the original colonial settlement of Kingston. There are no safe harbour facilities on Norfolk Island, with loading jetties existing at Kingston and Cascade Bay. All goods not domestically produced are brought in by ship, usually to Cascade Bay. Emily Bay, protected from the Pacific Ocean by a small coral reef, is the only safe area for recreational swimming, although surfing waves can sometimes be found in Ball Bay.
The climate is subtropical and mild, with little seasonal differentiation. The island is a volcanic formation with mostly rolling plains.
The area surrounding Mt. Bates is preserved as the Norfolk Island National Park. The park, covering around 10% of the land of the island, contains remnants of the forests which originally covered the island, including stands of subtropical rainforest.
The park also includes the two smaller islands to the south of Norfolk Island, Nepean Island and Philip Island. The major settlement on the Island is Burnt Pine, located predominantly along Taylor's Road.

NDIS visits Norfolk Island
Hello, everyone. Welcome to Norfolk Island.
It's the best place on earth.
It's a beautiful place to raise your children, we all live here, we love it, we all look after each other.
So, welcome to Norfolk.
KERRELL-ANN: Prior to the NDIA, there were no disability services on Norfolk Island.
So, our aim was to establish some services
so that all of the participants who came into the scheme have an opportunity for choice and control in purchasing the services, what they want
and where they want that.
We worked with community. We did a lot of consultation.
We met with families and we asked them about the things that they love about being on an island and some of the things that were challenges for them.
Understanding what those challenges were, we set about trying to establish services that were going to address those challenges.
My role is a new role which was created when the NDIS came to the island.
I currently support 14 participants with varying disabilities and they are ranging from preschool to late 30s.
The NDIS has been fantastic for the island.
They have allowed the participants to get more independent and also providing support for the families which they haven't had before.
My name's Lleyton.
I'm 20 years old and I live on beautiful Norfolk Island.
I've been on the NDIS a year, it's been be a lot of fun, and he's helped me to do my emails, helped me understand about bills, socialising, a bit of everything.
KATH: Since the NDIS has come to Norfolk, for Jeremiah, he's had a lot more opportunities.
He's getting more social time. We're getting access to speech pathology and behavioural therapy.
And we've done some keyword signing and he's really coming in leaps and bounds with that, which is fantastic.
I am Jonty.
I am 17.
I like cooking dog biscuits
with Mum! (LAUGHS)
We always sort of kept our mind open as to what were the possibilities for Jonty when
we got back to Norfolk.
His special school that he was attending in Brisbane, they used to cook biscuits for dogs.
How many of these do we need to pop in?
-Five.
-Perfect.
HOWARD: I guess the big beneficiary of the whole exercise is Jonty because he gets out in the community, he's delivering his biscuits.
It's been really successful.
We know that Jonty, as far as going to the future, is going to be looked after with our involvement and NDIS as the overlay, so it's just fantastic.
KERRELL-ANN: The families are growing so strong here on Norfolk Island and they are succeeding and they are talking to us about the next step and the next step.
The successes are going to be their own.
I just look forward to being able to look back and seeing my little part of that journey.
We all look after each other.
Everyone else who's got access to NDIS will be seeing wonderful improvements as well.
It's made me really confident to walk around town.
I can visit to my friends and different places on the island.
I feel happy.
