Mount Sinabung, Active Volcano in North Sumatra, Indonesia
We spent some time driving through a couple of farming villages (located at the foot of ash-spewing Sinabung), largely abandoned after major eruptions of the volcano in late 2013 and early 2014. Some 14 people died while thousands were evacuated. However a few families have braved the elements to return and mend their damaged houses and to resume livelihoods, but they still live under the shadow of a very dangerous volcano. So too are many thousands of people still inhabiting the numerous villages located within 5km of the volcano. Sinabung last erupted in 1600, and was thought to be dormant till everybody was surprised by fresh activities in 2010, followed by major eruptions in 2013 and 2014. Now it is still erupting.

Mount Sinabung Live Volcano, Karo Regency North Sumatra
We were blessed to meet a journalist, Dede, who witnessed the 2013 eruption of Mount Sinabung. He talked us through what happened before and after the volcano erupted. Many lives were lost and he government gave up in helping the people who lost everything in the eruption. We stayed in a place called Kabanjahe and our host, Grace, took us around to many attractions. Check out our upcoming videos on what to see around Kabanjahe and Berastagi.

Indonesia volcano eruption 2018: Flight chaos as Mount Sinabung blows in North Sumatra - TomoNews
NORTH SUMATRA, INDONESIA — Indonesia's Mount Sinabung started spewing ash earlier this week, prompting the country to issue flight warnings.
According to the Guardian, volcanic ash had been sent to heights of 7km. If ash comes into contact with aircraft engine, glass inside it can melt inside the combustion chamber, reports Wired. That can cause the plane's blades to stick together and stall the engine.
Ash particles can also become lodged inside the pitot tubes, a plane's airspeed sensors. If blocked, they may provide pilots with false readings.
