Mount Victoria, Devonport, Auckland
It is the summer holidays now, we went to Devonport town in North Auckland. We visited some popular spots in this town, such as North head and Mt Victoria.
The information below about Mt Victoria is from the website
Mount Victoria is one of Devonport’s famous landmarks. It’s easily accessible by foot and the walk typically takes around 10-20 minutes – depending on how many times you stop and admire the views!
.....Whilst the first signalmen lived in a tent or hut, later a Victorian styled villa was built to house the signalman and his family. The last signalman to live in this villa passed away in 1943. Today the Signalman’s House is home to the Michael King Writer’s Centre, which both supports and promotes New Zealand literature.
At the summit of Mount Victoria you’ll find one of Devonport’s disappearing guns, one of only a few left in the world. Historically, Mt. Victoria has a number of artillery emplacements and various concrete bunkers, one of which is now a music venue for the Devonport Folk Club.
Dotted around the summit of Mount Victoria you will also come across a colourfully painted mushroom field. These mushrooms are in fact the vents for a water pumping station which lies underneath the surface of the mountain.
Loved by locals and visitors, Mount Victoria is one of the best vantage points in all of Auckland. Enjoy spectacular views of the Auckland City Skyline and the stunning Waitemata Harbour – have your camera ready!

North Head, Devonport, Auckland
During the summer holidays in December, we went to Devonport town in North Auckland. We revisited some popular spots in this town, such as North head and Mt Victoria.
The information below is from the website
The North Head Historical Reserve is considered to be the most significant historical coastal defence site in New Zealand and receives a significant number of visitors each year. The location has commanding views over the Hauraki Gulf and inner harbour. First used by Maori for defence purposes the site was one of three cone pa in the Devonport area.
Whether you wish to delve into the historical detail of the location or enjoy a picnic lunch and the picturesque views, North Head is a fantastic place to explore and spend time.
North Head is one of the oldest of approximately 50 volcanic cones in the Auckland volcanic field having been formed over 50,000 years ago in a series of great volcanic explosions. Visitors can view a visual film history of North Head showing at the old stone kitchen built in 1885. This facility is located towards the summit complex and is open daily from 8.30am-4.00pm.
The information below is from the Wikipedia
Maungauika is a volcano forming a headland called North Head at the east end of the Waitematā Harbour in Auckland, New Zealand, in the suburb of Devonport.[1][2] Known for its sweeping views over the harbour and the Hauraki Gulf, since 1885 the head was mainly used by the military as a coastal defence installation, which left a network of accessible old bunkers and tunnels as its legacy, forming part of the attraction. The site was protected as part of Hauraki Gulf Maritime Park in 1972[3] and listed as a Category I historic place in 2001.[4] As part of a 2014 Treaty of Waitangi claim settlement the volcanic cone was officially named Maungauika and the reserve renamed Maungauika / North Head Historic Reserve. Maungauika is the Māori word for Mountain of Uika.
