Mount Woodson Trail | Potato Chip Rock | Poway, California | August 2nd, 2015
8 mile hike up Mt. Woodson trail to Potato Chip Rock and back. This is a fantastic spot if you're ever in the San Diego/LA area to get in a great adventure. From the top you can see most of the san Diego area and surrounding mountain range. Be careful not to go mid afternoon or evening; As you can see it gets quite crowded at that time. Thanks for checking out my video and please subscribe, like or share. Stay tuned for more adventure .

Hike Your Way to Healthy Episode #1 - Hiking Mt. Woodson Trail to Potato Chip Rock
On the first episode of #hikeyourwaytohealthy @backpacker_mike_ and I took a stroll up the Mt. Woodson Trail from Lake Poway, California. October, 2018. The trail is 8 miles round trip from the Lake Power parking lot with an elevation gain of just over 2000 ft. The first two miles of the trail is a walking path and gravel road. The second half of the trail is more rugged with many stone steps and rough terrain.

Iron Mountain Hike San Diego (5.2mi 1,100')
This is a beautiful hike near Lakeside, CA just off Hwy 67. It has ample parking, pit toilets, and a shady tree-lined path near the start to cool down in afterwards. There is little shade and no water on this hike. There are ample wild flowers of all colors, lizards, didn't see any snakes (this time), and humming birds at the top. The top has a telescope, and a sighting monument with a rotatable tube that has guides for all the landmarks inland and out to sea. The views include Mt. Miguel in the south, Mt. Woodson, and on clear days Catalina Island.

Vlog hike to Mt. Woodson from Blue Sky Ecological Reserve. San Diego, CA
I have hiked Cowles Mtn. numerous times it's sad actually, Iron Mtn a couple times, Palomar mtn observatory trail (hiked and rode my mtn bike down it when it snowed), Sunset cliffs (that's not really hike, that's more of a flat leisure walk, Idk why it was listed in hikes.com), Laguna trails (Probably all of them, and rode my mtn bike on them), Mission Trails (There's a handful out there, I did a couple including where the rock climbers are, that one was fun because as a hiker, you yourself have to grab and press your body against the rocks to get across, I recommend having someone whose been there before take you if you're a first timer.), Penasquitos trail, and hmm that's all I could think of at the top of my head at the moment. So I have a gyst of what to compare a new hike with (concentrating only on hikes located in San Diego).
Mt. Woodson was mentioned as somewhat strenuous. It's a constant climb from either Blue Ecological Reserve Trail Head or Lake Poway Trail Head. You will be climbing a mtn, so of course its an incline, yet when you get to the base of Mt. Woodson its a steep climb. A wee bit steeper, just a little bit, and the switch back are tighter than Iron Mtn. You will be climbing up over a few boulders and sometimes along the way some steps were made into the earth. As you're hiking Mt. Woodson, you may think you've reached the top because it will level out, but you haven't. The mountain just psyched you. It will incline again. The mountain has flat paths a couple times, psyching you out, which was frustrating as a first timer since I always thought sweet, i'm here, wait? no? dang. I'm pretty sure the second time I will not get my hopes up as I know where I am going now.
At the top, Potato Chip Rock is the main event. I have read weekends are the worse as everyone hikes it and there is a long line to take a picture on the rock. I went during the week, and there was only a handful of us. They were really nice. Ended up making some friends and learned about yoga.
The view at the top is SO worth it. I also got the best breeze at the top. If you hike up past the potato chip rock, it's just towers yet on the right, there's another rock to sit on off the ledge. I sat there for my own private peaceful time. I ended up spending an hour up there. Great place to think and it is an accomplishment to hike up Mt. Woodson, so i earned my hour with the view.
A lot of locals hike this trail, they only carry a water bottle which to me, as an avid hiker, i am amazed at these athletes. I'm always sipping on water. Bring water as it will get hot. It got hotter for me on my way down and took a toll on my mind. Dang hot orb in the sky.
Overall, the view, is so worth it.
Haha, also make sure to have the right shoes and hiking socks! haha
For more information:
I parked at Blue Sky Ecological Reserve which saves you 5 dollars and adds 2 miles to the hike. Making it a 10 mile round trip. Here's a link for directions and information on the trail.
When I hiked during the week there was a handful of people on the trail. Awesome people I got to talk to and hang out with. One of them was Vicki and she's a yoga instructor. Really strong. I suppose her studio will be uploading yoga videos online so people could do yoga at home. Hearthum.com
My friend has been trying to tell me the importance of yoga yet I am too impatient. Vicki told me about Vinyasa which is a constant movement of poses. I will definitely check it out. Thank you Vicki and hope to see you again either on the trails or out and about :)
Looking forward to the yoga videos, Until then here's a link to where Vicky could be located at for Yoga

How to Hike the Mud Caves near San Diego, CA

Hiking to Potato Chip Rock at the top of Mt. Woodson in San Diego
Near the summit of Mt Woodson, in San Diego County, is a savory natural photo opportunity known as Potato Chip Rock. This very a-peeling attraction can get crowded with other hikers and weekend warriors looking for that perfect picture, so don’t get salty, just grab your favorite crunchy snack and be prepared to wait in a long line for your chance to take a truly unique and fun pic.
Located between Poway and Ramona, the views of San Diego County from the top of Mt. Woodson are spectacular. While many travel to Potato Chip Rock via the Poway side, the route we took faces the eastern side of the mountain near Ramona.
Mt Woodson Trucktrail is an access road for maintenance crews to get up to the summit of the mountain and work on the man made forest of metal antennas and towers that you will find up there. This path is paved but steep at times. Overall, it was easy enough for my daughters and I to walk up, with many spots to rest and take in the gorgeous views along the way.
Parking is a little difficult as you literally are pulling off on to the side of California State Route 67 at Mt. Woodson Road by the fire station. I recommend going early in the middle of the week and bringing plenty of water, and a bag of potato chips.
MT. WOODSON HIKE
This was supposed to be one of the tougher hikes in San Diego. The main reason why it was for me was because I had just rode 35 miles from a CouchSurfers in Bonita. It was all hills and I haven't rode that far of a distance since I got to San Diego a month ago! So together with knee pain and blisters I had at the bottom of my feet, it WAS a tough hike.
Sadly what isn't include was what happened after my iPhone died... It turned to dusk after I summited and I was afraid of mountain lions so I shivered like crazy as I tried to sleep on potato chip rock. I also saw two black widow spiders up there as well.
However the morning hike down through the clouds was amazing and one of the greatest experiences I won't forget!
Slot Canyon Hike in Anza-Borrego Dessert | Hidden Treasure Near San Diego
We embarked on the Slot Canyon Hike near San Diego, California. It is officially known as the West Butte Borrego Mountain hike. It is actually located approximately 30 miles East of Julian. If you are going to Julian anyway, you could fit this short hike into your schedule - I don't know of any other slot canyon hikes near San Diego other than this one. If anyone knows of closer ones please post below (thank you).
Easy directions: From San Diego, head East on Hwy 78 about 30 miles east of Julian, and approximately 2 miles East of Borrego Springs Road from the 78. Eastbound on the 78, you will look out on your left side a small hard to see dirt road called Buttes Pass Rd. You will only see a small brown marker sign showing the name on the road if you heading Westbound on the 78. So be careful, and you really have to look. Take this road North bound approximately one mile to a fork. Take the LEFT fork (Borrego Wash) another approximate one mile to a dirt parking lot and park there. The trail head will be to your right (East) over a small hill - this is where we found it easiest to get down into the slot - turn left (West bound) down the slot path to the slot canyon.
Enjoy your hike!

On Top of Mt. Woodson
September 26, 2009
This is a strenuous day hike via Lake Poway. Trail is very steep and narrow in some places. Well marked and maintained most of the way until the last 1/2 hour to the top. The views from the peak are worth the effort. We hiked 1st of August, be sure to take enough water, it was extremely hot and dry! The views are to the ocean and to Palomar Mountain to the East. There is an easier way to the top, via highway 67.

Eagle Rock - a great photo spot outside of San Diego
Aside from Potato Chip Rock, the most popular rock for hikers in San Diego county is Eagle Rock, off the Pacific Crest Trail in Warner Springs. The rock, sitting right around 3,500 feet of elevation and 6.5 miles roundtrip is a great introductory hike for people interested in the PCT or hiking in general.
