295 // I finally got to shoot the world's most active continuously erupting volcano in 4K slomo! This is seriously a life changing experience and I can't recommend this highly enough. To get in front of nature's raw power is indescribable. I hope I got to convey a glimpse of what it feels like.

Siwi Lake was located in the east, northeast of the peak, close to the coast until mid April 2000 when following unusually heavy rain, the lake burst down the valley into Sulphur Bay, destroying the village with no loss of life. Mount Yasur is an accessible active The island is one of the most fertile in Vanuatu and produces kava, coffee, coconut, copra, and other fruits and vegetables. There are various types of accommodation on the island.
John Frum movement
Main article: John Frum
The island is the centre of the John Frum religious movement, which attracts tourist interest as a cargo cult.
The first John appeared at night as a spirit at a place called Green Point and told the people to return to their traditional way of life (custom). From that time custom on Tanna has been seen as an alternative to modernity encouraged by many missionary denominations. Yaohnanen is the centre of the Prince Philip Movement, which reveres Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, the prince consort of the United Kingdom. The cult is examined by British writer Matthew Baylis in his 2013 book Man Belong Mrs Queen: Adventures with the Philip Worshippers.[7]
Christian missionary John Gibson Paton served in Tanna in the mid 1800’s. Cannibalism was practiced before Christianity swept the island. In the biography of Paton the horror of the pagan practice of abusing and murdering disobedient wives is detailed. Paton’s wife died of tropical fever as they served together.

Little hidden village under Mount Yasur volcano on Tanna in Vanuatu
The Infinity Sea Gypsies have visited Vanuatu many times over the years, one of the last great gems of the South Pacific, and there is always something new to discover in such a wild and rarely visited place. And, though there are many wonderful islands in this archipelago to visit, the Magical Island of Tanna, home to one of the worlds most active volcanoes, Mount Yasur is worth whatever rigors necessary to reach. The hidden village of the volcano's traditional owner and our dear friend Philimon, is also a must. Drinking traditional Kava, from the saliva of young boys, is also something unique...and quite possibly worth the many risks associated. Sea Gypsy Tim Charody made this intro to our most recent visit there. The Chinese are building a road from the main port on the island, so sadly the magic may soon be lost to the ceaseless march of development, but if you find your little sailboat anchored in Port Resolution, just ask for the trail to Philimon's place, and bring a few gifts.

Vanuatu's Tanna Island
The main reason people visit Tanna Island is to stand on the rim of the awesome exploding Mt Yasur - like I did. Have a look at this incredible sight and then come and meet some local villagers with me!

Yakel Kastom Village & Mount Yasur Tours with Rockwater Resort, Tanna Island, Vanuatu
During our stay at the amazing Rockwater Resort in Tanna (video - we went on a tour to Yakel Kastom Village and Mount Yasur.
Yakel Kastom Village was incredible. A real traditional village, where the tribe live off the land, wear their traditional clothing and live in wooden and straw huts. Watching them perform their dance was mesmerising.
Then we got to see the spectacular hot ash eruptions at Mount Yasur. These eruptions when off every few minutes, so over the course of our visit, we got to see the most incredible eruptions at sunset and then against the dark sky from right at the rim of the crater.
Without doubt, the best (and most authentic and real) experiences we've had in a year of travelling through 20+ countries. I hope this little video has given you a glimpse of the beauty of Tanna and Vanuatu.
Mount Yasur Volcano - Tanna Island, Vanuatu
The volcanic Mt. Yasur has been erupting nearly continuously for over 800 years. On most days, you can approach the edge of the crater and watch the volcanic fireworks. It is way cool.
Mount Yasur Volcano - Tanna Island, Vanuatu May 2013 (the best bits)
One of the most easily accessible active volcanoes in the world. It put on a great show for us, but was particularly smoky, which obscured the view of the vents somewhat. However, it has to be seen (first-hand) to be believed. Video just doesn't do it justice; you have to go there to feel the awesome power of the eruptions as the shock waves shake the ground and rock your body! Thanks to the beautiful people of Vanuatu, Tanna Lodge and Unity Airlines for a fantastic Tanna Island adventure.
