15 minute drive out of Reykjavik you can hike mount Esja, about 800m high altitude. Quick and easy 4 hour hike after long normal work day.

Hiking 60 Miles Alone in Hornstrandir Iceland

I didn’t know Hornstrandir existed until a week before I arrived upon its shores. You’ll feel incredibly isolated on this hike because the landscape is devoid of trees and people. The windy peninsula jutting over the top of the West Fjords is home to beautiful cliffs, lush green valleys and arctic foxes. The extremely dramatic and photogenic Horn at the end of the trail is the climax of the hike. The giant green slopes are home to thousands of sea birds nesting in the towering cliffs that depend straight into the crashing ocean. This hike reminded me so much of Hideo Kojima's game Death Stranding.
This hike is slightly difficult due to the isolation. You have to bring everything you need with you because there’s nowhere to re-supply. There are no roads. You need to be precise with your roundtrip ferry reservations. There are a few sharp cliffs with ropes to guide you up and down. There are small and large stream crossings depending on the tide. The route I took was about 50-60 miles long with about 12,000ft of elevation gain and took me about four days to hike.

Mountain Hiking in Iceland near Reykjavik - July 4, 2012
Here on a 9 day vacation/filming/adventure trip to Iceland with son Mark ( his friend Josh, and Kelly & Marcus of Skylight Films ( to do some 2nd unit filming scenes for an upcoming children's movie Good Kid Bad Kid.
In the evening of the 2nd day, we decided to go on a hike to the top of a mountain just NW of Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland. It took us about 5 hours to go up & 1.5 to go down ... my iPhone that I was filming on died (battery went dead) while I was filming checkpoint 5, but I didn't actually go any further as Marcus & Kelly were way ahead of us, did get to checkpoint 6 & were ready to head back down. It was about 1:30 AM in the morning .. they were pretty much the top & had a fantastic view down to Reykjavik & the other nearby valleys. It was still bright daylight when we arrived back to our hotel in Reykjavik, around 4 AM in the morning, LOL.

Climbing Mount Esja + Reykjavik CrossFit Championship - Active Moments in Iceland
On day 1 in Iceland we climbed Mount Esja, which was a beautiful hike and a great first impression of Iceland.
We waited for the athletes of the Reykjavik CrossFit Championship at Steinn, where they finished their mountain run. After that we followed them to the venue for event 2.

Hiking Esja mountain - Reykjavik, Iceland
Mt. Esja is located in Kjalarnes, past the town of Mosfellsbaer just east of Reykjavík. It is accessible by bus, you have to go off at the Hiking Centre Esjustofa.
Last month I went on a hike. I thought it's gonna be an easy one since I've been on Esja before and I already knew what is all about. Little I knew I was wrong.
What I thought it's gonna be a 4 hours hike, ended up in being a 9 hours one. We went about 20 km and I pushed the limits, the relatives and all the friends of my limits to maximum.
Everything hurt, and I gave up so many times just to pull myself together and keep going. It was not easy, and I was not happy with myself half of a time, but in the end everything was meant for me to understand the limit is only in my brain (and I can finally see clearly: it was all worth it).

Joseph and I rented a Cozy Camper and road tripped around Iceland’s Ring Road. This was near the end of our trip. We decided to hike Mt Esjan to see a beautiful view of Reykjavík. Glad we, or more like I, decided to hike all the way to the top!

This trip will take you to the frozen glacial tongue that is Sólheimajökull. It is a magnificent phenomenon, a rugged, raw and ever changing hub of ancient frozen water. We will explore the crevasse riddled outlet glacier with its amazing ice formations, sinkholes and jagged ridges.
