RV Travel Camping // A weekend at Vogel State Park // Blairsville, GA
If enchantment can come by location, we were enchanted during our recent trip to Vogel State Park and the Blairsville, GA area. We were able to see 3 planets from the back side of the lake during our night hike as well as more stars than we can normally see. The lake in the morning was so serene it was hard to talk above a whisper so as not to disturb nature itself. The sounds of Wolf Creek running through the campground as the water cascaded over rocks put us in a great mood the whole time we were there.
We had a great time with friends whom we helped David celebrate his 65th birthday with a short walk on the Appalachian Trail and helped him eat a pancake breakfast. All in all, we highly recommend Vogel State Park as a must-see destination.
Saturday, we took a trek over to Brasstown Bald; the highest point in Georgia. Man, what views we had from the visitors center. Even though copperheads were bad this time of year, we never saw one and enjoyed our time there.
We finished our weekend up at the famous Walasi Yi Inn and Mountain Crossing. Many Appalachian Trail hikers have gone through the building here as well as gone through a shakedown for the trail. Just a little north of the southern terminus of the Historic Appalachian Trail at Neels Gap, the tradition of discarding worn out hiking shoes by throwing them in the tree still lives strong. The Walasi-Yi Inn is the only place on the 2175 mile Appalachian trail that actually passes through a building.

Riding up at Sheep Wallow back in July 2013 after record rain falls this year really made the roads really really rough, but we were able to get through, lifted YJ and stock CJ7 rocking and rolling through it.
Full Hike: Blood Mountain Near Neels Gap, Georgia
Hike Description:
For many, this is merely the beginning. For some, it is the end. The Appalachian Trail (A.T.) snakes its way through 14 eastern U.S. states, touches a variety of locations/landscapes on an expand of almost 2200 miles, and graces Georgia with its southern terminus. In that state, a tiny portion of the A.T. together with the Byron Herbert Reece and Freeman Trails form a 6-mile loop around and over the summit of Blood Mountain—the highest climb on the A.T. in Georgia.
The famed shelter on top of Blood Mountain is bare but its walls are well-built. Daylight and whatever else effortlessly flood through hollowed windows/entryway. Constructed in the 1930s, many have found the structure a welcoming sight throughout the years. While basic and adequate under normal conditions, it becomes invaluable, a paragon of safety whenever the weather turns.
Use this loop to enjoy the sweeping views of northern Georgia. Use it to understand what drives those who attempt the A.T.: many of them will fail, but some can already see the end before they even start. Push on northbound, and fear not of the seemingly insurmountable task to come. Or look ahead further south to the journey's inevitable redemption—not in solemn contemplation but with a sense of humbled achievement. Follow the white blazes.
Self Commentary:
This loop felt longer to me than it actually was, maybe due to my anticipation of setting foot on the A.T. for the first time. I found the white blazes more sufficiently spaced between the Byron Herbert Reece Trail/A.T./Freeman Trail intersection to the shelter than from there to the A.T./Freeman Trail intersection. The blue blazes were even less clear on the Freeman Trail portion of the hike. The Freeman Trail was also the most difficult, as even though it is mostly downhill, the trail becomes needlessly narrow and winding in many parts, while crossing over very rocky/slippery terrain. I noticed a few camping options on the summit (beside the shelter). Views of North Georgian rolling hills/mountains were a study in contrast when compared to the state's southern coastal plain. Trailhead parking was readily available early, but became limited later on due to the popularity of this hike. There was no potable water; option is to carry or filter from ground sources.

North Georgia River Trail Hiking
Two day, twelve mile hike along the Conasauga River Trail in the Cohutta Wilderness in north Georgia. A beautiful hike, even with the thirty-eight river crossings that we encountered. Though challenging at times, Dixie wagged her tail and eagerly led us through each step of the way!
Hiking Blood Mountain via Byron Reece Trail to the AT in Blairsville, GA
Got up at 4AM and drove to the Byron Reece Trail parking area to ensure we would have a place to park this time! We took the Byron Reece trail to the AT, then to the peak of Blood Mountain. For the ascent, we backtracked but took Neels Gap instead of Byron Reece.
Appalachian Trail - Blood Mountain Overnight Part 1
Music: Great High Mountain Originally by Ralph Stanley and sung here by Jack White
I received a Christmas gift from my daughter, Kristen. She gifted me an overnight hike on the Appalachian Trail at Blood Mountain in the Chattahoochee National Forest of north Georgia. It is within 1.5 miles from the entrance to Vogel State Park. Most people try to park at the Mountain Crossings Store located at Neel Gap since the Appalachian Trail passes through the store property (there is a 20 minute parking limit in the small parking lot). We parked overnight at the Byron Reece Trailhead (just north of the Mountain Crossings store) located on Highway 129 between Blairsville and Cleveland, Georgia. From the trailhead we took the Byron Reece Trail for 0.7 miles and connected with the Appalachian Trail and traveled southbound to the summit of Blood Mountain. We hung out at the summit, explored the stone shelter and enjoyed the views of God's creation before hiking further southbound to find a camp site. Our hike was only about 6 miles in and out. The peaceful night was interrupted by a surprise storm with 40-45 mph winds and heavy rain. I don't think either one of us slept very much. LOL! We awoke to a cold morning, enjoyed some more great views, and then hiked back out to the Mountain Crossings store where we purchased a Blood Mountain AT sticker. It was a wonderful hike with my daughter. Good times!
Thank you for hiking with Sleeves! Keep Hiking!
