MEC loses $11M as new CEO braces against storm of competition
Mountain Equipment Co-op, Canada's largest outdoor gear retailer, is losing money, says its new CEO Philippe Arrata — a lot of it. The outdoor recreation gear and clothing retailer lost $11.487 million last year on sales of $462 million, according to financial statements audited by KPMG and posted on MEC's website.

CSR in Canada, Part Three: Vancouver
Visit for the latest sustainability and CSR headlines.
Interview with Lorraine Smith, Consultant for Canadian Business for Social Responsibility. Part 3.
Transcript:
Vancouver is quite interesting the whole left coast; perhaps similar to the US. You can paint some stereotypes if you will of the more granola crunchy style you might associate with California, you could also tie to BC as well. Interestingly, Canadian Business for Social Responsibility CBSR, began in Vancouver in the mid-90's. that is where it was started, it was founded. And most of the companies that joined CBSR, in fact all for a number of years, were British Colombia based companies. Small some sort of medium sized companies. So I think you could fairly say that the active interest from business in terms of what do we do about these social and environmental challenges definitely saw more discussion, more public agitation if you will and simply more business take up in British Colombia before other areas. And CBSR, as an organization then opened up an office in Toronto in 2003, and the mission of that office was to really start to bring corporate social responsibility to the larger corporations in Canada and try to unfurl it across the land, which I think to a large degree it has done quite successfully.
It is important to note that the corporate activity in Vancouver is generally smaller businesses, not entirely, there are some large companies headquartered in Vancouver and there are some very interesting and high impact initiatives underway but the corporate dynamic is different. Exceptions would be large companies like BC Hydro for example, it is a large electricity company. But generally speaking the early days were sort of very small, not quite mom and pop smaller companies. They are influence, Mountain Equipment Co-op, not a huge company, but its influence has affected I would go so far to say all companies across Canada because they are so willing to share their corporate social responsibilities, successes and lesions learned and that has affected large corporations across the country.

Mountain Equipment Co-op Head Office Virtual Tour
Explore Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC) Head Office - a 10,400 sq. m. (112,000 sq ft) LEED-certified facility in the False Creek Flats area, southeast of Vancouver's city centre in British Columbia, Canada.
Completed in 2014, the building continues MEC's commitment to a broad approach to sustainability, incorporating a number of environmentally-responsible, resource-conserving and socially-enlightened strategies, including the use of natural building materials such as mass timber as the primary structural element.
Visit naturallywood.com/MEC to navigate through the entire virtual tour, including interesting annotated facts about the building.
A Commitment to Sustainability - Mountain Equipment Co-op
Mountain Equipment Co-op's commitment to sustainability runs deep. Among its many initiatives, the retail co-operative has donated millions of dollars in grants towards environmental causes, implemented a green building program and established a zero waste program—all in an effort to reduce their social, environmental and economic impact on the earth.
To advance their goals even further, MEC has established two funds with Vancouver Foundation.
Our first fund at Vancouver Foundation was set up as an endowment fund for the environment, explains MEC's community program manager Laurie Edward. It's been a really important tool for us to help fund our land acquisition grant program which conserves ecologically and recreationally significant resources across Canada.
The co-op's second fund, the MEC Annual Fund, is equally ambitious. We're still in the process of building the parameters of the fund but are looking forward to this vehicle being a way for us to invest very deeply in some important strategic opportunities for conservation and access, says Edward.
In 2006, MEC's funds provided grants to a variety of initiatives, including the Cumberland Community Forest Land Acquisition Project and The Bruce Trail Association.
Vancouver Foundation is responsive, established and easy to work with, says Edward about their partnership with the foundation. Through these funds they are helping MEC to achieve our goals.

Sandy Treagus, CFO, Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC)
Treagus speaks about his company’s decision to relocate to the Flats – which had been designated partially as a tech cluster that has mostly failed to take shape – in 2014. Treagus said that, even though MEC is not a tech company, many firms are now thinking more tech-like than ever, and the Flats’s appeal has resurfaced since 2009, when other businesses were allowed in.
Why to work at Mountain Equipment Co-Op?
A piece of work for the Business Class in Sol School's.
I should choose a company in Calgary and make a video about it, but the company should be something that I'd like to work with. So, I chose Mountain Equipment Co-Op.
Hope you enjoy the video.

Walking Billboards: MEC Campaign in Vancouver Toronto Montreal, September 2013
For one week in September, Wild On Media's Walking Billboard teams in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal conducted a social media sample giveaway campaign. The teams in every city would be scheduled to arrive in key market locations and the public would be advised via social media when and where the giveaways would occur.
Wild On Media's Walking Billboard Teams offer far more effective advertising than tent signs of any size on the roadside (which frequently fall, can get blocked by other tent signs and get dirty from cars and construction activity) and old fashioned painted sandwich boards. Even flags and banners are considered commonplace.
● Sustainable advertising medium positions the builder as eco-friendly, innovative, fun, and an active local employer
● Can be made to flicker, can be music-accompanied, and motions can be coordinated
● Cheerful and friendly Brand Ambassadors keep smiling and have both hands free to distribute samples, flyers, conduct contests and even operate devices
● Can attend events year round and they move with the crowds from area to area
● Highly customized schedules and can stay in an area or keep moving
● Message faces backwards and forwards and when walking towards each other, passersby can see both sides simultaneously
● Colourful and active by day, becoming brilliantly lit at night
● Can move indoors with property managers' approval
Here is a link to WIld On Media's Walking Billboard page.
