Greg Gebbie Tribute Slideshow
Gregory J. Gebbie September 22, 1977 - January 9, 2010 Summerville, SC - Gregory James Gebbie, Lieutenant US Navy retired, age 32, died Saturday, January 9, 2010 at his home in Summerville, South Carolina after a long illness. He leaves the love of his life, Kristin Sparks Gebbie along with his two loyal Labrador companions Keyser and Mojo. He was the son of Darwin and Priscilla Gebbie, and eldest brother to Alexander, Nicholas and Christopher all of Lebanon, CT. Greg also leaves behind his grandparents, many aunts, uncles and cousins, two nephews and many friends. Born in Norwich, CT, on September 22, 1977, Greg attended the Lebanon school system where he enjoyed participating in the band, soccer and wrestling. After high school he attended the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, majoring in systems engineering and receiving his commission as a Naval submarine officer. Upon graduation from Annapolis in l999 Greg completed the Navy's nuclear power training in Charleston SC. He then received orders to serve on the USS CHICAGO (SSN 721), a fast attack submarine stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. During this period he met and married his wife Kristin of Mountain Top, PA. Throughout the time spent with the Navy, they enjoyed living in Hawaii, Louisiana and South Carolina. Upon receiving the diagnosis of his rare form of cancer in 2005, Greg chose to participate in medical studies for treatment at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. The family is very grateful for the expertise and care provided by the staff there with special thanks to Dr. Nieman. During the course of his illness both Greg and Kristin were brave and cheerful, dealing with each treatment in a positive manner. Greg and Kristin had a wonderful life together, enjoying sports, the outdoors, playing scrabble, traveling and visiting with friends. One of Greg's passions, besides the New England Patriots, was the design and installation of home theaters. Another was his love of gourmet cooking and sharing his refined recipes. Greg and Kristin enjoyed the visits from family and friends in their home and were thankful for the time spent with them. Greg loved his family and close friends, especially brother-in-law Will Bonifant and his childhood school friends known with pride as the Lebanon Boys. Neither time nor distance could erode the bond that Greg and these friends formed and maintained. They will forever cherish their memories of a reliable, generous, and remarkable man who always took all their money in poker. A memorial service celebrating Gregory's love of life will be held January 23, 2010 at 11 o'clock at the Lebanon First Baptist Church. Donations may be made to the Gregory James Gebbie Scholarship Fund, C/O The Savings Institute, 554 Exeter Road, Lebanon, CT. 06249. The scholarship will be awarded to a graduating student of Lyman Memorial High School, who is pursuing a degree in engineering.

Part 2:
Interview with Donald G. Martin, WWII veteran. CCSU Veterans History Project
Interview conducted by Vincent Roche. Donald Martin was drafted into the U.S. Navy in the spring of 1944. He went to Bainbridge, MD for basic training, and then received an addition 12 weeks of specialized training as a navy hospital corpsman. His first job was in the Naval Hospital in Bethesda, MD where he worked in the venereal disease ward. After about 8 weeks of hospital duty, he was reassigned overseas to Tinian Island. He was assigned to the Navy Military Hospital #204 where he was promoted to a Pharmacist's Mate 3rd class. The hospital was relatively small, although it was well supplied. This hospital was specifically for Japanese and Korean civilians on Tinian Island, and many of the doctors and nurses in the hospital were Japanese citizens. Although, the war was declared over, Martin was stationed on the island until May of 1946. He was discharged as a Pharmacist's Mate 2nd class by the end of May 1946. He then returned to Penn State to continue his studies as an industrial engineer, at which time he also joined a reserve unit, which he notes was an extremely inactive unit. After graduation he was working in Detroit at the Ingersoll Rand Company, when he was called to report for duty in Sept. 1950. When he reported for duty he was instead inducted into the Marine Corps as a Staff Sergeant, and went to Field Medical Service School at Camp Lejeune for eight weeks of training. By December of 1950, Martin was in Korea and assigned to the Charlie Medical unit, part of the 1st marine division, which was similar to a MASH unit. It was a small medical unit with 50 doctors and nurses that served wounded marines brought there by helicopter and ambulance. During a misunderstanding with a superior officer, Martin was transferred to a combat unit and was placed near the front lines. After 30 days in the line unit, he was transferred to the back of the line and worked in Battalion Aid until he was eligible to move to a base in Japan. He was there for about 30 days before receiving his orders to return to the United States. He was discharged from the Marine Corps in January of 1952. In the interview he also discusses some of the close friends he made, as well as some the experiences he had on leaves and liberties.
Religious Intolerance and America’s Image and Policies Abroad
March 22, 2018 | The values of the American Creed – pluralism, diversity, and tolerance – sustain U.S. global leadership and provide an aspiration to others. These principles contribute to the appeal and influence of the United States on the global stage. Insidious intolerance and delegitimizing rhetoric domestically undermines these ideals and provides space for hate crimes and degrading actions, threatening to devalue the currency of U.S. power. This panel discussion examines the impact of subtle and overt forms of domestic religious intolerance on the U.S. image and ability to pursue our policy objectives abroad. Looking forward, what can the U.S. government and civil society do to shape the narrative, rhetoric, and policies in the United States to preserve these unique components of our power?

P2P Workshop: Appropriate Use of Drug Therapies for Osteoporotic Fracture Prevention - Day 1
More than 10 million people in the United States have osteoporosis, a skeletal disorder that causes bones to become weak and fragile as a result of low bone mass. The condition makes people more susceptible to fractures, which can impair their ability to live independently and even threaten their lives. The social and economic burden of osteoporotic fractures is substantial. Reducing osteoporosis prevalence and hip fracture incidence are among the major objectives of Healthy People 2020, the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services’ national health promotion and disease prevention initiative.
Lifestyle changes—including getting adequate nutrition and regular exercise, quitting tobacco use, limiting alcohol use, and preventing falls—can help reduce a person’s risk of osteoporotic fractures. However, medications may be prescribed to prevent fractures if a person has very low bone mineral density or has experienced a prior fragility fracture.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved several types of drugs to prevent osteoporotic fractures. Clinical guidelines by various medical organizations recommend bisphosphonates (BPs) as a first line of treatment for most people who have osteoporosis. BPs are effective for short-term use (up to 3–5 years) by people who are at high risk of fracture. However, the benefits and risks of longer-term treatment are less clear. Reports of rare but serious adverse events such as atypical femoral fractures and osteonecrosis (death of cells) of the jaw have raised questions about the safety of osteoporosis drug use, especially in people who use the drugs for more than 3–5 years or who had a low risk of fracture when they began treatment.
Research Challenges
There is a gap in scientific data about the appropriate long-term use of many osteoporosis drugs. There are uncertainties about which people will benefit or may be harmed if they take the drugs long-term. Public concern about these and other unanswered questions has coincided with a significant decrease in use of osteoporosis drugs and a leveling off in what had been a promising decline in the incidence of osteoporotic fractures. These changes have raised concerns within medical and professional communities that many people who might need the drugs are not being prescribed them, and those who are prescribed them are not taking them.
In addition, evidence is limited regarding the initiation and length of “drug holidays” (a medical practice in which a patient stops taking medications for a period of time and then resumes treatment again, if the patient or their doctor believes it could be in their best interests), whether stopping treatment reduces the risk of serious adverse events while maintaining fracture prevention benefit, and which individuals should change treatments instead of simply taking a drug holiday from their current medication.
Innovative research strategies are needed to address these knowledge gaps and to help better inform individuals and physicians in their decision-making about osteoporosis treatment.
Workshop Goals
This P2P workshop will assess the available scientific evidence to better understand the appropriate use of drugs for osteoporotic fracture prevention, specifically addressing the following questions:
What are the benefits and risks (including major adverse events) of osteoporotic drugs with short-term use (from first-use up to 3–5 years of treatment)? What factors influence outcomes? What are the benefits and risks of osteoporotic drugs over the longer term (for treatment periods longer than 3–5 years)? What factors influence outcomes? Do drug holidays improve outcomes? What patient and clinician factors impact the use of and adherence to osteoporotic drugs?

Carmichael Short Specialist and Default Advocate Mike Rigley discusses Ocwen Short Sale Success
Carmichael Short Sale Specialist, Default Advocate, Distressed Property Expert and Carmichael Short Sale Agent Mike Rigley here bringing you the latest Carmichael Short Sale Information. Thank you for joining us. Today let's talk about our recent Ocwen Short Sale Success.
I have to say; recently Ocwen and Greentree are quickly becoming my favorite servicers to work with. This Sacramento Short Sale is just another example.
This real nice family were living in a 2 bedroom 1000 +/- square foot home which was perfectly ok for just the two of them and as we all know then life happens... They had a newborn and are expecting a second later this year.
Now I shared a room with my brother growing up and my girls shared a room as well, so could a two bedroom house have worked out for them -- possibly except the second bedroom was on the ground floor at the front of the house and the master bedroom was upstairs at the back of the house. I gotta tell you, that would not make me comfortable either -- too much opportunity for problems. Anyway, with their living situation intolerable but owing more than the house was worth they contacted me to Short Sale the property.
We submitted the Ocwen Specific Short Sale package and all related supporting documents. We followed up with them religiously and low and behold 37 days after submitting the Ocwen Short Sale package we received the approval. Is that great story or what?
These nice people will walk away from over $300,000 in debt on a property worth $130,000 with no responsibility to repay the unpaid balance, owe zero in income taxes on the forgiven debt and start financially fresh. As an added bonus, a new owner gets to move in and the property does not become another foreclosure statistic. Life is good!

Post-Tramatic Stress Disorder & Veterans Correctional Housing
Panelists discuss success, challenges and lessons learned from implementing correctional housing units for veterans in jails and prisons, along with the role that Post-Tramatic Stress Disorder plays in crime and rehabilitation. Notably, a significant percentage of combat troops are returning home profoundly affected by both visible and invisible battle scars, including high rates of PTSD, traumatic brain injury and serious physical wounds. The majority of these individuals, an estimated 77 percent, completed their service to their country with honorable discharges, yet their pathways from the military into the justice system typically began with a difficult transition back into civilian life.
