Belize Episode 2 - Mountain Pine Ridge
Spring Break 2019 finds our extended family on an adventure to Belize! Today we visit Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve. While there we visited 1,000 foot falls, enjoyed a picnic lunch and swam in the amazing Big Rock Falls. Special thanks to Grandma Judi for making this trip possible and to Auntie Deana for the planning.
More information about Pook's Hill can be found at:
Big Rock Falls Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Belize
The Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve of Belize is home to several of these natural waterfalls that are spread deep in the forests and jungles of the country. Getting to them is an adventure in itself; some are just a short drive away, while others require a more intense hike deep into the forest. Either way, the prize of reaching these waterfalls and enjoying their natural beauty is very much worth it.
So listed here are five Top Waterfalls that are a must visit in Belize. You will not regret taking the day to explore the surrounding areas and basking in their beauty.

Controversy over Development in Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve
For the latest news across Belize, visit:
There is growing public concern about the status of a development in the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve by a group of businessmen led by former Immigration Minister Elvin Penner. His phone number and name are listed as a contact on the billboard welcoming persons to a planned subdivision for an acreage said to be de-reserved as far back as ten years ago. That de-reservation, we are told, was posted in the Government Gazette by means of a statutory instrument. But do the owners have environmental clearance to subdivide? Photos taken of the area show roads built along the ridge tops and one built into a heavily vegetated valley where there is a waterfall. The developments have reportedly caused significant impact on the watershed in the area, as well as cenotes in the Pine Ridge. The Reserve is managed by the Forest Department, but the Department of the Environment is responsible for any environmental impact assessment of the area. Chief Environmental Officer Martin Alegria confirmed to us that no application for any subdivision in the area has been received from the investor or the Land Utilization Authority of the Ministry of Natural Resources, and therefore no EIA has been developed. We are told that the area is part of the plans for the second leg of the Sustainable Tourism Programme of the Belize Tourism Board. Chief Executive Officer Percival Cho provides additional information.

The gently rugged Maya Mountains follow the beautiful Hummingbird Highway to central Belize. Time to prepare for the challenge and challenge a little strange adventure. Its departure begins at St. Herman Blue Hole National Park. In Belize, where 80% of the country is bordered by tropical rainforests, you can explore the underworld of yet another charming beneath the forest. All the mountains we see there are made of limestone, and there is a cave right beneath them. We will go to the mountain at the back end. It is our destination, Crystal Cave. The cave that we stumbled upon in search of places where past loggers are resting. Be careful! Only after the Belize independence in the 1980s systematic geological exploration began. Currently, mapping work is in full swing, so tourists are allowed to visit at 0.1%, and Crystal Caves to go today is one of them. Let's see how deep it is. Begin exploring with a dark, deep cave entrance, professional guides. Surprisingly, the traces of the bonfire remain on the caves at the top of the cave. The cave is covered in gray light, is not it? This is all ash. Maya is evidence of rituals. You are lucky today. You can experience the underground world of Maya. If there are no more questions, why do not we go deeper now? In a perfect darkness and calmness, we leaned on a strand of light lanterns and a strand of rope and stepped into the cave one step at a time. Are you going out here? Sure. I'm going to slip this way straight down. The road goes deep down. The bag is so small that you have to take off your bag and go through the narrow pathway. Unexpected scenery is unfolding at any moment. The striking stalactites on every side are as delicate as greek marble sculptures. The light is shining like a jewel. Do you want to see jellyfish? Like the crystal cave name, it is sparkling brightly. It's really like being in the sea. Sit here and come down. Is it possible that the Mayans came down deep into the cave to pay tribute to God? The sound of the stone is ebbing. Well, is it okay to knock on a stone? Yes, this part has already been touched by a lot of people. I sit down and continue to fall down and finally reach my feet. And at the end is a small skull that has lost its face...
